Description
A. JOHNSON April 5 DRAFT CONTROL F.0R LOCOMOTIVES Filed July 28. 1926 Patented Apr. 5, 1927.
UNITED STATES PATENT 1 OFFICE;
ALBERT JOHNSON, OF LQS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR O35 ONE-FOURTH TO L. V. HUGHES AND H. E. HUGHES, BOTH OF LOS ANG-ELES, CALIFORNIA.
DRAFT CONTROL FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed July 28, 1926. Serial No. 125,345.
My invention relates to draft control for locomotives and other steam generating plants and it has for its principal object to provide in combination with a fire box and the door thereof one or more bailie members or deflectors for regulating and directing the air supply to the fire box in such a way that a more perfect combustion takes place and takes place in the upper part of the fire box and is directed through the'upper or super heating tubes of the boiler, thus operating to give greater efficiency in the creation of steam, with a saving of fuel.
Other objects and advantages will appear from the following description of one embodiment of my invention shown on the accompanying sheet of drawings, which I will now describe.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a fire box and boiler, with a section thereof broken away and shown in section, to show the general construction and arrangement; and p Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View H through the door of the fire box with my invention applied thereto.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the invention as here embodied for purposes of description, includes a fire box, 1, with oil burner. 2, therein, and with the boiler tubes, 3, 3, including the upper or larger tubes, 4:. a, referred to as the super-heating tubes. The mechanism so far referred to is of well known construction and can be of any desired type, forming no part of the invention, except as the invention is applied to and used in connection therewith. There is also the usual air inlet and door, as at 6. The main dooris designated 7, hinged at 8, with latch, 9, and covers the main opening or door frame, seen at 10. Y
My invention as here illustrated includes a base member or plate, 11, secured just inside of said door frame 10, and constituting an anchorage for a bafiie member 12, hingedly connected to said base member, 11, as at 13, said baffle member inclining upwardly and rearwardly within the fire box, opposite the door opening, and held in place by means of chains, as 14, which canbe shortened or lengthened as desired. Said base member, 11, is secured on top of the fire wall, W, and the bafiie member 12, hinged thereto at its lower side, can'be moved toward and from the door opening, 10, as will be clear from the drawings. 2
The door, 7, is provided with an opening, 10 and two side wings, 15, 15, are preferably cast or formed as a part of said door, 7, at the opposite sides ofthe door opening, and between said side wings, 15, 15, hinged its top edge, as at 16, 16, between said side wlngs, 1s a draft regulator door, 17, with a peek hole, 18, and cover, 19, therefor.
ber, 12, but it will be understood that such,
protection as may be wise can be used.
The air supply 1S admitted under the draft regulatlng door, 17, through the main door opening, 10*, and is directed upwardly toward the upper part of the fire box, while the combustible gases are directed upwardly along the under side of the baffle member, 12, the combustion taking place in the upper part of the fire box as the mixture of said gases and air takes place, thus creating intensified heat in the upper part, or the top of the fire box, and back through the super-heating tubes, 1, 1.
I have also shown said batlie member, 12, provided with a peek hole, 22, and with a series of angularly disposed holes, 23, up through which the combustion gases and heat are forced to meet the air currents above said bafiie member.
Thus I have provided an efiicient means for causing increased heat in the fire box because of the better combustion, and therefore making the boiler more efficient in the development steam, with a saving of both fuel and water, due to the fact that more heat is secured from the fuel and steam of adrier nature 'is produced.
I do not limit the invention to the details of construction and arrangement shown for descriptive purposes, realizing that changes can be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. In combination with a locomotive fire box and boiler having boiler tubes opening into said fire box, an oil burner in said fire box below said boiler and discharging into said fire box, means for admitting air into said fire box for combustion with the prodnots from said oil burner, a door into said fire box above said oil burner level, and an adjustable baflle member within said fire box inwardly from said door, said baii'le member being positioned in an inclined manner from within the fire box, opposite said door, upwardly and inwardly toward the upper boiler tubes for the purpose of directing the products of combustion from said oil burner and said air admitting means into said upper boiler tubes.
2. In combination with a locomotive boiler and fire box, with boiler tubes opening into said fire box, an oil burner in the lower door into said fire box above said oil burner level, a batlle member adjustably connerted at its lower edge to the innern'iost part of said door frame and projecting upwardly and inwardly toward said boiler tubes in the upper part of said fire box, to deflect and direct the heat and products ol conibustion from said oil burner and said air inlet means to said upper boiler tubes, and means for adjusting said bafi'lc member to different angles for directing said heat and products of combustion to the upper boiler tubes, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at Los Angeles, Los Angeles county, California, this 22d day of July, 1926.
ALBERT JOHNSON.
