The structure for containing disinfecting fluid is substantially as .follows, being illustrated particularly in Figs. 1 and 2:
The can body 1 has a plain upper rim 2 as is the usual practice, on which is fitted a cover 3. The can and the cover are usually made circular, the cover having a top 4 and a depending skirt 5 forming a tight fit over the upper end of the can. A transverse partition 6 is inserted in the skirt portion parallel to the top and forms a liquid containing chamber 7. An inlet pipe 8 with a cap 9 is utilized to fill the container and a dischargevalve 10 is utilized-to discharge theliquid intothe garbage can for disinfecting:

The. disinfectants usually used are of" rather a thick consistency and do not flow readily and as the valve plunger is normally drawn upwardly the outlet is positively closed. A small amount of liquid however, is contained in the circular opening 13 of the valve seat around the plunger andon depressing the plunger by pressure on the top of the cupped sleeve 22, the washer 17 sets on the upper side of the valve seat 12, thereby preventing outflow of liquid from the container. Thus the amount trapped below the washer 17 drops into the can. This is usually only a few drops as the plunger is operated quickly and is sufficient to disinfect the can after insertion of the garbage. However, if desired, the plunger may be pressed downwardly a number of times to inject more or less disinfecting material.
The dumping bottom construction is substantially as follows:
The lower end of the can is completely open, being closed by a hinged bottom 30 which forms a tight fit and is preferably made with an inwardly turned flange 31 having a slight inward bevel as shown in Fig. 2. This bottom is secured to the can wall by a hinge 32 on one side. A hook 33 extends upwardly from the opposite side of the bottom and has a lateral projection 34;.
A swivelled latch 35 has a handle 36 and a laterally extending tongue 37 on the opposite end to engage the projection 3a of the hook. This latch is preferably pivoted on a pivot pin 38 which extends through a circular reinforcement 39 of the can body.
The usual handle 40 is fastened on the eyes 41 on opposite sidesof the can body.
In the operation of discharging the can it is merely necessary to elevate the can over the receptacle to receive the contents and operate the latch by means of the handle 36 to disengage same from the hook 33 and if the weight of the contents of the can is insufficient to swing the bottom open the foot may be pressed on the projection 3t to swing the bottom open.
From the above construction it will be seen that I have provided a sanitary garbage can in which a liquid may be injected as desired to disinfect the garbage in the can. The cover containing the liquid is of such design that it may be adapted to standard garbage cans and may be marketed as a unit for use with cans now on the market. However, it is desirable that the cover with the liquid container therein be incorporated in the can having my discharge arrangementof hinged bottom so that in the collection of garbage it is not necessary for the people handling same to remove the cover which usually becomes more or less damaged in careless handling.
It is obvious that my can in its characteristics as having a container for a sanitary liquid and having a self-dumping bottom may be considerably changed in general construction and in specific details without departing from the spirit of my invention as set forth in the description, drawings and claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A cover for a sanitary garbage can comprising in combination a top wall having a depending substantially circular skirt, a partition across the skirt forming a conainer above the partition, a valve seat threaded in the partition, a tubular stem secured to the top, a valve plunger slidable through the stem and through the valve seat there being an annular space between the stem and the seat, a valve washer below the seat secured to the plunger, a second Valve washer above the seat secured to the plunger, a packing nut secured to the tubular stem, a bracket secured to the top having a cross member with a hole therethrough, a cupped sleeve secured to the upper end of the plunger slidable through said opening and over the packing nut and a compression spring between the cupped sleeve and the said packing nut.
2. A garbage can having a can cover with a top, side walls, a partition across the side walls and a depending skirt, there being an opening through the top, a valve plunger slidable therethrough, there being a circular opening through the partition, the plunger extending therethrough and having washers secured to same on the inside and outside of the partition to form valve closures, a tubular stem secured to the top through which the plunger passes, a packing nut secured to the tubular stem, a bracket secured to the top having an open ing with a cupped sleeve extending therethrough, the upper end of the plunger engaging the upper portion of said sleeve, and a spring coiled around the plunger bearing a ainst the upper end of same and the packing nut.
