PATENT OFFICE.
S. GRANDT, OF
DISPENSING TOP FOR CONTAINERS.
Application filed September 11, 1925. Serial No. 55,657.
This invention relates generally to a construction of dispensing tops for containers and more particularly to a dispensing top or closure member for/collapsible tube containers.
A general object of the invention is to provide a closure member for containers more particularly of the collapsible tube type in which provision is made for producing a tight or closely sealed effect when the device is in non-delivering condition.
The invention includes a delivery or discharge nozzle for the tubev container having a conical formation with a discharge port in one of the side walls thereof. A closure member is fitted 'to the conical discharge member with the edge thereof spun or upset into locking relation with the base of the conical discharge member, the 010 sure member being rotatable about the discharge member on which it is supported to thereby bring an opening in the side wall thereof into and outof registration with the delivery opening in the nozzle member.
In a prefenred embodiment of the inventionthe discharge member and the closure member have an unsymmetrical or eccentric formation designed to roduce a binding or he walls of the members immediately about the openin when the openings are moved out of re istration with each other. This results in t e attainment of a complete and adequate sealing effect in the non-operative position of the closure member so that the mere rotation of the closure member in either direction to non-operative position has the effect of closely sealing the edges of the opening to thereby preserve the contents of the container.
Other features of the invention will be hereinafter 'referred to.
' In the drawings,
Fi we 1 is a view in side elevation of a co lapsible tube container equipped with a dispensing top embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the dispensing top portion of the device shown in Figure 1 taken on the line 22.
Figure 3 is a plan view' of the parts shown in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 2 tion It to showing the tion.
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing a modified form of the invention. Figure 6 is a view in horizontal secton parts in a relatively, closed posi- .taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5-.
Referring to the drawings for a more detailed description of, the invention, a collapsible tube container 10 is shown in Figure 1, the container being provided with a dispensing top 11 to which the invention hereinafter described is directed. The dis pensing top 11 of the container 10 is made up of a discharge nozzle member 12 formed integrally with the shoulder 13 of the container and which has a conical formation.
14 formed in the nozzle member 12. The
relation of the cap or closure member 16 to the nozzle member 12 is such that the member 16 can be rotated on its sea-t through an angle or part of a revolution indicated by the arrows in Figure 3 of the drawing.
The nozzle member 12 is provided with a discharge opening 18 which takes the form of an elongated slit extending axially of one of the faces of the conically-shaped nozzle member. A corresponding port or opening 19 is formed in the cap or closure member 16, the ing somewhat smaller in its lateral direction than the opening 18 in the nozzle member 12. The opening 19 in the cap member 16 is adapted to be brought. into or moved out of register with the opening 18 in the nozzle member 12 upon rotation of the cap member 16 in the manner described.
In order to bring about a desired or necessary sealing effect which will completely close the openings in the di ensing member when in inoperative position, the dispensing top portion of the container is formed in an unsymmetrical or eccentric formation as is clearly shown in Figures 2, 3 and 4 of the drawing. Referring again to opening 19, however. be-.
Figure 2 of the drawing it will be seen that the cap member 16 is so disposed that the opening 19 therein in alinement or register with the opening in the nozzle member 12.. With this disposition of the parts it will be seen that the base portion of the cap member 16 is spaced symmetrically about its length from the corresponding shoulder or base portion 15 of the inner nozzle member 12. On the other hand, referring to Figure 4 of the drawing, it will be seen that when the cap or closure member 16 has been rotated through a position such as will remove the port 19 from registration with the port 18, the base portion of the cap member 16 is brought into close contact or engagement with the base portion of the-nozzle member 12 in the vicinity of the port 18 while at the opposite side of the top member the cap mem er 16 is spaced at a slightly increased distance from the enclosed base portion 15 of the nozzle member 12.
The general result of this disposition of parts is to force the inner surfaces of the cap member 16 which lie adjacent to the port 19 into close engagement with the contiguous outer surfaces of the nozzle member 12. This has the effect of producing a tight or closely fitted relation of the parts which provides an effective sealing effect and prevents evaporation of volatile constituents of the contents of the container when the dispensing top is turned to inoperative position.
Reference has already been made to the smaller size of the port 19 in the cap member 16 as compared with the size of the port 18 in the nozzle member '12. The purpose of this is to provide a non-registration of the edges of the openings 18 and 19 as is clearly shown in Figure 3 of the drawings, when the ports are in registering positions.
. By this arrangement a pronounced shearing or cutting effect is achieved upon the region of material extending through the ports at the termination of a dispensing operation of the containers. This shearing operation is rendered particularly clean-cut by the nonrcgistration of the parts referred to so that a clearing action of the ejected material is provided which prevents the accumulation of residues or remnants of material in or about the discharge ports.
In order to facilitate the operation of rotating the cap or closure member 16 the outer surface of the cap member 16 is preferably longitudinally corrugated or grooved as at 20 to facilitate grasping of the closure member by the fingers of the user.
In Figures 5 and 6 of the drawing there is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the parts are shown in av symmetrical or conical relation as distinguished from the unsymmetrical or eccentric relation as shown in Figures 1 to at of the drawing.
In this form of the invention the nozzle member 21 has a truly symmetrical, conical formation and the cap or closure member 22 which is fitted in rotative relation to the nozzle member 21 has, in like manner, a conical formation such that the cap member 22 can be rotated through a full movement of revolution about the nozzle member 21 upon which it is seat-ed. While this form of the invention does not rovide the special seating effect achieved in the construction shown in Figures 1 to 4 of the drawing, nevertheless, the dispensing top or closure thus provided is capable of useful application and is a substantial improvement over devices for this general purpose heretofore known and used.
What I claim is 1. In a dispensing closure member for collapsible tube containers. an outwardly converging nozzle member having an elongated port in a side wall thereof, a cap'member rotatably mounted in enclosing relation to the nozzle member and having a port arranged to be placed in registration with the port in the nozzle member, said nozzle member and said cap member being unsymmetri cally formed whereby relative rotation o the parts to non-discharging position will produce a sealing eifect.
2. In a dispensing closure member for collapsible tube containers, an outwardly converging nozzle member, a cap member rotatably mounted in enclosing relation to the nozzle member, said nozzle member and said cap member being unsymmetrically formed, and the walls of said members being provided with discharge ports in the sides thereof having the shortest length from base to tip.
3. In a dispensing closure member for collapsible tube containers, an outwardly converging nozzle member, a cap member rotatably mounted in enclosing relation to the nozzle member. said nozzle member and said cap member being inclined in a lateral direction, and the side walls of said nozzle member and said cap member being provided with ports in the side toward which the members are inclined.
