UNITED STATES ARCHIE P. FAHNESTOCI, 0] LONG ISLAND CITY, NEW YORK.
SPRING TERMINAL OLD.
Original application filed June 6, 1923, Serial No. 643,715. Divided and this application filed March 27,
1924. Serial No. 702,435.
The present invention relates to binding posts or fastening devices forthe terminals of electrical conductors and consists in the combinations and hereinafter described and particularly set forth in the accompanying claim.
The invention has for its purpose to provide a device of this character wherein the may be readily applied to or removed from t e clip through the instrument of the terminal piece alone; i. e.,"
- without necessitating the use of the hands or any implement for manipulating the clip as a requisite to applying the terminal piece thereto orfor removing the same.
A further purpose resides in providing a terminal clip having these automatic features which will securely hold the conductor gripped or clamped position readily permitting the insertion and'removal of the conductor and insuringproper electri cal contact at all times between the conductor and the fastening device.
The invention is further characterized in that the clip is especially adapted for that type of work wherein a large number of clips are mounted on a terminal block in close proximity to the end that the respective conductors may be applied to position or removed at will, and thereby avoiding the necessity for using both hands, or the implements usually employed for separating the respective clip members to terminal pieces as now required.
This application forms a division of m co-pending application for United States Patent Serial No. 643,715, filed J line 6, 1923,
which has matured intoPatent N 0. 1,585,840,
May 25, 1926.
The invention is'shown by way of illus! tration in the accompanying p drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the clip; Figure 2 a top plan view thereof, with for clearnes; Figure 3 a top plan view of the clip comlete;' p Figure 4 a side elevational view, and
Figure 5 a front elevational view thereof.
arrangements of elements receive the I Referring to the construction in further detail and wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the different views shown, the clip is formed with a body portion 17 of appreciably rigid metal having a tongue 18 struck therefrom and adapted to be secured to a base piece B by said tongue portion and a screw 24 after the manner shown. The portion 19 of the body part 17 is upturned and bifurcated, and said bifurcated portions are'formed with similar inturned hook members 21".
The resilient portion or arm 22 formed integral with the body portion 17 is cutaway along both side edges at its free end to provide a tongue which is in like manner formed with a hook portion 23 that co-acts with the two hook members 21 to secure the conductormember A in the manner indicated in Figure 4.
en applying the terminal piece A to this type 0 clip said terminal piece is first, pressed against the resilient portion 22 cansingthe latter to give sufliciently for the terminal piece to he slipped under the two hook members 21, and said movement of the arm 22 will simultaneously bring the hook portion" 23 into alinement with said hook members 21 to receive the terminal member A and secure the same. An aperture 25 is formed in the clip portion 22 to give access tothe screw 24.
It is to be understood that I do not de to the precise details of arrangement herein set forth, as it-is obvious :that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of the in vention.- R
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is v a A clip adapted to receive an electrical conductor by single hand operation comprising a body portion, means on said body portion adapted to secure it to a base piece, spaced upstanding hook members at one endof the body portion, the other end of said body portion havin formed thereon a back turned arm paralle y spaced therefrom and terminating with a hook member registering with said first hook members to grip the terminal of a conductor between them; said means including a tongue struck out from 5 the body portion and bent to grip the edgepf the base piece; an auxiliary securing dGVlCG comprising a clamping element engaging said body portion and said base piece, said arm being provided with an aperture to give access to the clamping element, subno stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ARCHIE P, FAHNESTOCK.
