UITED STATES PTENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM L. QUESTEL AND HUGH M.
THE HUGH RHIND GOLF SHAFT CGMPANY, OF PQBESMOUTH, OHIO, A COLLEGE/A TION OF OHIO.
GULF CLUB.
Application filed April 15,
Our invention relates to golf clubs.
It is the object of our invention to provide a balanced golf club head suitably weighted with a plate to protect the base thereof, the plate being so arranged that it will be firmly anchored to the club head and cannot shift thereon.
It is our object to insert a wedge-shaped rass plate in the base of the club head, drilling a common hole through the plate into the head, drifting the material of the plate into the head around the margin of the hole and then inserting in the hole in the plate and in the head a fibre plug of relatively large diameter, which serves to embrace between it and the club head the drifted portion of the plate.
It will be understood that the plate may be molded originally or otherwise formed with this drifted portion or inwardly extending collar which is inserted into the head forming a broad bearing surface to prevent the relative shifting of the head and plate.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a bottom plan view of the head with the plate and plug in position;
Figure 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 is a shaft which terminates in a head 2 having a face 3 and a sole face 4. 5 designates the heel portion. This sole face 4 has a wedgeshaped groove cut therein to receive a wedgeshaped brass plate 6. The broader end of the wedge is adjacent the face 3 of the club head. This plate is fastened to the sole of the head by the screws 7. When the plate in position and suitably located, the combined plate and head, as a single structure, is drilled with a relatively large hole 8. This drilling carries the soft brass around the margin of the hole 8 into the hole 9 formed in the club head 2. An annular shoulder 10 is thus formed.
If the hole in the brass plate has been previously made and the hole in the club head has been previously made, it may be possible to utilize a molded shoulder 10 on the plate which is tapped into position, or the molded shoulder may be provided on the plate and the drill inserted therethrough into the wood to form the hole in the wood. At all events,
1928. Serial NO.1$2,301.
the shoulder should be formed on the brass plate and inserted into the wood to form a broad annular bearing between the plate and the club head.
Into this hole is inserted a fibre plug, which is driven therein to form a tight fit. The sole of the club is then polished. As the fibre plug is preferably of a different color from the wood of the head, an attractive sole is provided having decorative features, due to the colored plug, the bright plate and the color of the wood of the head.
It will be understood that we desire to comprehend within our invention such modiiications as may be necessary to adapt it to varying conditions and uses.
. Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a golf club, a head, a plate mounted therein, said plate and head having coinciding apertures, means extending from said plate around the aperture therein into the margin of the aperture in the head, and a common plug inserted in said apertures, said means surrounding said plug on all sides, whereby said plate is prevented from move mlent relative to said head by said head and p ug.
2. In a golf club, a head, a plate mounted therein, said plate and head having coincid ing apertures, means extending from said plate around the aperture therein into the margin of the aperture in the head, and a common plug inserted in said apertures, said plate being counter-sunk in said head and wedge-shaped with the broad face of the wedge adjacent the face of the club, the portion of said plate extending into the wood surrounding said plug on all sides whereby said plate is prevented from movement relative to said head by said head and plug, the axis of said plug being at an angle to the striking face of said club.
3. In combination in a golf club of a head, a counter-sunk sole plate having a portion thereof carried into the wood of the head adjacent a common aperture through the plate and in the head, and a plug for said aperture adapted to engage said plate and head, the portion of said plate extending into the wood surrounding said plug on all sides whereby said plate is prevented from RHIND, OF EOEIE'MOUTH, OHIO, ASSIGNORS T0 7 movement relative to said head by said head and plug, the axis of said plug being at an angle to the striking face of said club.
4. In a golf club, a head, a sole plate, said head and sole plate having a relatively large aperture therethrough, a portion of said plate adjacent said aperture being carried into the margin of the aperture in the head, and a relatively large retaining pin forced 10 into said aperture, and a plurality of retaining screws mounted in relatively small apertures in said plate adapted to fasten said plate to said head, said portion of the plate surrounding said pin on all sides, whereby said plate is'prevented from movement relative to said head by said head and pin.
In testimony whereof, We afiix our signatures.
WILLIAM L. QUESTEL. HUGH M. RHIND.
