Inthe el'nbodi'mentof the invention Illustrated 1n the drawing theheater is shown as vincluding a base casting comprising end Walls 1 and @having inwardly extending horizontal 'flaiiges 3 and a back: Wallll, said back Wall having an inwardly turned upper margin 5 in which are spaced notches 6. The side faces of the upper part of the Wall 4 have attached thereto 'strips 7 of asbestos or other' non-heat radiating material which prevent ythe radiation of heat from the Wall. rlhe flanges 3 are arrangedto vsnpport a trough or pan 8 from the front wall of which extends a channeled projection 9 that constitutes a 'handle for withdrawing the pan S and also as a runway for' pouring a combustible fluid, such asalcohoh into the pan from the front' ofthefheate'r'.
The gas chamber of the heater comprises a lmllorvl casting* having acylindricaflA p ortion 10 and 'an irregularly sha-pe-1 po'rtion includ ing a vert-ical front fnfall 115e rounded-'bottom Wall 12,4 an' inclinedbaek tva'll` and a horizont-al' 'upper '-Ivall" "14h- 'Cine' end of u'the portion 'lO-isprovided with a flange 15, and the opposite end With a cylindrical extension 16 having a vertically extending notched bracket 17. This casting is mounted upon and supported by theend Walls 1 and 2 of the base casting.
I -The upper Wall 14 yof the gas chamber is provided v'with parallel series of openings 18 and'1Qin `which perforated discs .20 and 2l areititt'ed'-, the discs 2O and 2l being made of any suitable non-comlmstible material. rlhe openings 19 are spaced in the Wall le so that they aie alined with the center of the notches til when the parts are assembled,V andthe openings-18 are formed in a longitudinal series forward of saidopenings 19;
Along `the front edge of the Wall 14e is a verticalifla-nge 22, and mounted against the flangeand in alinement over the openings 18 are' frames 23 ofradiant refractory material Within the limits ofwhich the lgas emitted through the discs 20 is burned, the frames 23 assisting in the radiation of the heatA and in imparting to the burner a radiantappean ance.`
Attached to the flange 15 is an air mixer that includes a'plate .2li and arounded holloW extension 25 that has anv opening that registers at one endwithftheopening at the endof acylindrical portion l() Of the gas chamber, and into vthe opposite end 26 the end 'ofV theA vaporizing tube -is fitted. The extension 25 has on either side an opening 27 to atmosphere for the admission of air to be mixed lWith the vapor emitted from the vaporizing tube. The vaporizing' tube 28 is supported transversely across the openings 19in the top vvall of the gas chamber and is equipped with a tip 29 that enters the openingin the part 25. The opposite end of the vaporizingtube 28 is `supported in the notch in the bracket 17 and the position' of the portion of ythe vaporizing tube that lies over the openings 19 is lsuchthat the upper edge 5 of thefwall 4 turns-forwardly over the upper face of the tube. The ynotches in the Wall L provide a suihcient area for the admissionof airito the flame emitted from the discs 2'1 and also provide passage Ways through which the flame from the combustible fluid inthe panfS;` can find egress and at the Sametime hold the "flame in-*close contact-With-theivaporizingtube.
The vaporiz'ingtube is supplied Vwith a fuel-liquid througha supply pipe@ adapted 5 to be. connected with .any suitable 4source of supply. rlhe vaporizing tube is also provided With a valve and clean out rod 31 such, for instance, as alcohol.
operated by a hand wheel 32 the specific construction of which is not a part of this invention but is fully disclosed in my copendingapplication Serial No. 2,825, filed January 16, 1925.
In operating the device the vaporizingl tube is initially preheated by igniting` in the pan 8 a combustible fiuid having a high heat value The flame is deflected upwardly and against the Vaporizing tube by the wall 4 and its over-turned ledge 5. This initially heats the liquid fuel sufficiently to vaporize it in the vaporizing tube 28 from which it is emitted into the air mixing device 25 from whence it passes into the gas chamber. As soon as a sufficient amount of gas has been supplied to the gas chamber it is emitted through the perforated Vdiscs 2O and 2l. The gas emitted through the discs 2O burns within the confines of thc refractory radiant frames 23 and the gas emitted'through the discs 2l burns within the area of the vaporizing tube so that after the operation of the heater has been initiated by preheating from the flame in the pan 8, it will continue in operation indefinitely and so long as the fuel is supplied to the vaporizingl tube 28 through the supply passage 30. The wall t constitutes an efiicient means for baffling the flame both from the pan 8 and also from the discs 21 so that it is held in close contactwith heated area of the vaporizing tube, sufficiently heating it to vaporize the liquid fuel.
