Application filed January 31, 1925. fierlal Ito. 515M231 The present invention relates to cigar boxes and more particularly to the type made of wood paper board or a combination of the two and having a hinged cover or lid and end walls projecting vertically above its front and rearwalls. Anobject of this invention is to provide edging for a box of this type which will permit the cost of manufacture of the box to be reduced. A further object of this invention is to combine the edging with labels so that the operations in the n1anufactureof the box will be reduced.

To these and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and comb nat ons of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described: the novel features being pointed out Fig. 5 is a rear view of the body before. the rear edging section is applied thereto Fig. 6 is a plan view of the cover label and edging; and I v Fig 7 is a rear view of the lid or cover after the cover edging and label has been applied. l

Referring more particularly to the drawings, it indicates the bottom of the box hav ing a front wall 2, a rear wall 3 and end walls l' projected above the front wall and rear wall. A cover member 5 is hingedly secured to the rear wall 3 by a hinging strip l). The cover, in this instance, embodies a combined label and edging such as shown 111 Fig. 6 and will not be. described it detail herein as it forms the subject matterof an aplication filed by me on even date herewith. This cover is edged and labeled independently of the box body and is applied to the box j body after the blank shown in Fig. 3 has been applied, and before the blank shown in Fig. 4 is applied. The cover before being applied to the box body with the combined edging and labeling thereon has the appearance from the top side like 6 of the drawings, its rear edge being exposed so that the hinging tape 6 may be adhesively secured directly to the material of the cover. The edging for the box embodies, in this instance,

two distinct blanks, one being illustrated in on lines 9 to provide the different sections.

The central section? which is placed on the front of the box has a bottom tongue 10 foldable on the line 11 and forms with the lower portion of the section 7 the edging for the lower horizontal corner, this tongue be ing bent and adhesively secured to the underside of the bottom wall 1. This central section also has a tongue 12 foldable on the lines 13 and 1d and of less length than the tongue 10.. This tongue 12 folds over the upper edge and down on the inner side of the front wall and forms on the adjacent portion of the section 7 the edging for the upper front edge of the box; Between the ends of the tongue 12 and the adjacent fold lines 9, the front wall has extensions 15 which cover the front ends of the endwalls 4: above the upper edge of the front wall, due to the fact that the end walls extend above said front wall. The section 7 has a central opening 16 which exposes the front face of the vertical front wall 2 The end sections 8 are, in this instancaidentical and each has at its lower edge a tongue 1'?" foldable on the line 18 to extend over the underside of the botton wall 1. The distance between the fold line Q1 and the fold line 18 being greater than the distance between the fold line '11 and the fold line it of the section 7 due to the fact that the end Walls are of greaterheight than the front wall. The tongues l9'are notched at opposite ends toprovide shoulders 22, the distance between which and the fold line20 being equal to the difference between the heights of the end walls and the front and rear walls. The rear section 24 is now applied to the box. This section has a lower flange 25 the appearfoldable on the line 26 to extend over the' bottom of the box. It also has a tongue 27 foldable on the

28 and 29, the line 29 being coincident with the hinging line of the box and the line 28 being coincident with the rear corner of the cover of the box, the portion beyond the line 28 extending over the cover of the box and forming the edging for therear edge of the latter. The tongue 27 is shor er than they tongue and beyond the ends of the tongue the section 24 has extensions 30, the lengths of which are equal to the difference in height between the rear wall and the end walls, so as to cover the portions of the end walls projecting beyond the rear wall. After this section is secured in place the edging of the box is complete.

It will be noted that the blanks herein shown provide for edging and labeling the box by automatic machinery 'with coinparatively few operations. An edging blank is provided having three sections for -the front and end walls of the box leaving the rear wall exposed for the attachment of the cover or lid." The rear section is separate from the other section and is applied after the cover is secured inplace so that a portion thereof may'be used as an edging for the rear face of the cover or lid at one and the same edge extending onto the bottom of the box, two of said sections having tongues formed with shoulders at their opposite ends and extending over the upper edges ofthe end walls and downwardly onto the inner faces of said end walls, and the intermediate section having a tongue shorter than the tongue on the opposite edge of said section and extending over the upper edge-of the front wall and downwardly on the inner face of,the front wall, said intermediate section having extensions beyond said tongue covering those edge portions of the end walls projecting above the front wall, and .a separate blank forming the edging ,for the rear wall and having a tongue at its lower edge extending onto the bottom wall and a. tongue at its upper 'edge shorter than the tongue on suchbottom wall, extending onto the hinged cover, said other blank having extensions at opposite ends of the shorter tongue, cover- Walls projecting above the rear Wall.

2. A cigar boxcomprising a body having end walls projecting above its front and rear Walls, a cover hinged to the rear wall,

two end sections of said blank having'portions extending onto the bottom of the bot tom wall and portions extending over the top edge of the end wall and down on the inner face of such end wall, an intermediate section on the front wall having a portion extending onto the bottom-wall, and a por-' tion extending over the upper edge of the front wall and down on the innerside of said front wall, and a separate edging on ing those portions of the edges of the end therear wall having a portion extending onto the bottom wall and a portion extending onto the topface of the rear edge of the cover of the box.
