This invention relates tov improvements in locks, and, more particularly, to an automatic lock having a plurality of bolts adapted to be projected into locking engagement with a keeper when a door is closed.
An object of my invention is to provide an automatic iock which embodies a plurality of bolts. v
j Another object of .my invention is to pro vide a lock having a plurality of bolts which may be engaged with a keeper'in such a manner as to prevent the separation ofthe bolts from the keeper by the action of a jimmy.
A further object of my invention is to pro-V vide a lock having a main bolt carrying an auxiliary bolt which latter is adapted to cooperate with a keeper and the main bolt'in such manner as to prevent the main bolt from being withdrawn from the keeper without the appropriate instrumentalities. j
Another object of my invention is to provide a lock having a plurality oi" bolts which are operated sequentiallyto engage a keeper.

An embodiment of the invention may include a housing or casing 15 having a reciprocable. locking-member or bolt 16 in the form of a dead or main bolt 16. A cover plate 20 may be provided and screwed to the casing by suitable screws. The bolt 16 may be slidable on the inner Surface or" a wall 17, and between walls 18 and 19 of the casing, which serves as guide members.
Means in the form of compression springs 21 and 22 are provided to exert a torce to project the bolt from the casing. The springs may be positioned upon posts 23 and 2a attached to a wall 25 of the casing and the ends of the springsl may be disposed in apertures 26 and 2'?, respectively, inV an inner end ot the bolt 16. Other obvious methods of disposing the `springs in the bolt may be pr Y vided. The opposite end of the bolt 16 may be projectable from the casing into operable relation with a keeper or guard 28.V ln the present invention the said bolt end is bifurcated and the tines or projections 29 and 31 thereof are spaced apart a suitable distance to permit the entrance ot a substantial portion 32 of the keeper therebetween when the projections are thrust into apertures 33 and 34, respectively, in the keeper upon al projection of the bolt 16 to its operative position.
When the bolt has been project-ed, means are provided to secure the keeper and bolt in locked engagement in opposition to a torce which may be applied to separate the keeper from its operative relation with the lock, as, for example, when a jimmy is employed.
The means just-mentioned may comprise an auxiliary bolt 35 carried by the bolt 16 and may be reciprocably mounted within the bolt 16, the latter being termed amain or carrier bolt.
`For the purpose of facilitating the description, the lock may be considered as being in its normal operative position in a door. Thus the movement of the main bolt 16 may be considered as horizontal and the movement of the auxiliary bolt 35 as vertical.
As more clearly shown in Fig. 6 the auxiliary bolt may comprise a body portion having an extension 36 with a cross or lock-bar 37 vertically disposed adjacent to the projecting end thereof. As stated, the auxiliary bolt 35 is movable within the main bolt which latter may be provided with a suitably shaped aperture 38 (see Fie'. 5) to provide a sliding` fit for thebody of the auxiliary bolt 35`. The aperture 38 may extend into the projections 29 and 31 and the lock bar 3T may, when in 1 its lower position, be completely encased within the main bolt 16. The auxiliary bolt is constantly urged to move to its upper position asshown in Fig. 3 under the action of springs 39 and 41, positioned between the ends of sockets 42 and 43 in the auxiliary bolt 35 and the bottom of the aperture 38. Posts i4 and 45, secured tothe bottom of the aperture 38 may beprovided as guides for the springs. The auxiliary bolt is adapted to slide vertically by'reason'o-t' guides 39 integral therewith, which tit grooves 40 in the main bolt. lt will be understood that the auxiliary bolt 35V takes itsv upper position when the main bolt 16 is in its projected position at which time a retainer bar 52 occupies a recess 53 in the auxiliary bolt. rlhe recess is formed at one side oi: the auxiliary bolt 35 and, in conjunction with an inner surface 5% of the main bolt 16 (see rig; 5), constitutes an elongated aperture for the reception oi' the retainer bar 52. This bar is movable sidewise in one direction under the `action of a spring 55 disposed between a projection 56 secured to the upper side oi" the main bolt 16 and an offset end 57 (see Fig. 5) of they bar 52 which end is slidable in a guide 58 and adapted to be engaged by a wall 59 ot the casing' and a iace plate 6() as the main bolt- 16 is moved outwardly. lWhen the main bolt is retracted, means operate to first depress the auxiliary bolt 35 and when this latter bolt reaches its lower position it is retained in such position by the latch 57 as the main bolt 16 is retracted. The end 57 of the retainer bar 52 is, therefore, moved away from the face plate 59 and as the auxiliary bolt moves downwardly the retainer bar 52 becomes disposed uuon the upper edge of the auxiliary bolt 35, as shown in Fig. 1.
An important feature of the present invention consists in means :tor automatically eecting an actuation ot the lock mechanism to project the main bolt 16 and throw the auxiliary bolt 35.
As above described, theinain bolt 16 is normally urged toward its projected position by means oi' the potential energy of theV springs 22 and 23, which are placed under compression when the said bolt is retracted. Means for holding or detaining the bolt 16 in its retracted position may comprise a bolt tumbler 61 adapted to engagewith a groove lil() llO 62 disposed transversely of the bolt 16. The tumbler 6l may include a slide rod 63in0v' able in a guide 64, a guide 65 being provided'to confine the movement of the tumbler which is normally urged toward the bolt 16 by reason of the expansiony action of a spring 66 positioned betweeny a shoulder 67 on the tumbler vand guide 65 secured to the casing.
The upper ond of the rod 63 may be profz vided with cam-finger 68 having a chamfered'end 69 so arranged as to engage with a similar end 71 of a releaser bar 72,' the opposite end 7 0 of which normallyrprojects through an aperture 73 in the-wall 59V andy faceplate 60 of the casing.
The releaser b'ar 72 is slidable in guides 74 and 75 secured to the casing. A spring 76 positionedon the bar 72 between the guide 7 4 and the enlarged end 7 0 of the bar exerts a constant force to move the said end,
which is of beveled form, out froml the `cas' ing. The end 70 of the releaser-bar is,

When the lock is moved with a door Lto bring thev end 70 of the releaserbar 72 in contact with the' keeper or guard v28, the releaser is moved inwardly to release the main bolt by disengaging the tumbler therefrom which bolt j is projected under the action of the springs 22 and 23'and enters the apertures 33 and 34 in the vguard 28. A retraction of the bolt may be effected of which may be inserted into a socket 79 (see Figs. 2 and 5), or by means otakey inserted into a tumbler cylinder 82 of a key barrel 83 having an arm 84 `associated therewith.V
Means for cooperating with a knob or key for moving the main bolt -16 may comprise a gear'rack 85 integral with the bolt 16 and a segment or toothed'disk 86 loosely mounted on a shaft 87 f (see Fig. 2) jouig naled in the wall 18 oi the casingA 15. Ilhe shaft may be provided with the above-mentioned socket 79 to receive the shank 78 of a knob 80.v
The shaft 87 may project into the casing i through the disk 86 and may have a collar which in conjunction with the hub 88 or hub 88 secured thereto. may be provided with'an'eXternal flange 91 prevents endwise movement of the shaft.V The hub 88 may be secured to the shaft 87 by means of a projection 92 integral with the shaft and disposed in recess in the hub and by screws 93. f

After'the bolt has been projected and a reverse movement is desired, the hub 88 is direction. of the Yarrow X. rotated by means of a key or 'knob in the l 88 however, brings the arm 95 thereof into engagement with a lug 102 mounted on the` periphery of the disk 86. lt will thus be evident that a rotary movement of the arm` 95 will cause. the teeth'o'fthe segment 86 to traverse the rack`85 and move the sameA har 72 into engagement with the keeper 28.
As an additional means ot preventing a retraction ot the main lbolt I mayv provide the auxiliary bolt with a boss or post 103 see Fig. 5) and at a suitable point within the casing a projection or stop 104 maybe positioned. The stop may be so located that when they auxiliary bolt ascends, the stop 104 will be disposed in the return path ot the bolt 16, thus providing an additional means to prevent inward movement ot the bolt 16 until the hub 88 is rotated by a key or knob.
When a key is employed, the keybarrel 33 may be so positioned that an arm S4 on the key cylinder thereof is adapted to engage ith a pin 103 projecting from the arm 95 and a rotation ot the hub 8S may be effected when the key is turned.
lt will be evident that by reason ot the corelation between the bolt operating mechanism proper and the key-barrel, the main bolt and auxiliary bolt may be actuated either by means ot or independently of the knob secured to the shank 78. In the application of the lock construction previously described to a rim lock, a lock barrel may be journaled in the casing and may be connected to the key cylinder by a shank, the barrel having an arm to engage the pin 108.
Means are also provided for temporarily retaining theimain bolt andauxiliary bolt inoperative to the action ot a key or knob. Such means may comprise a push rod 109 associated with one end 110 oi a lever 111 tulcrumed on a pin 112 secured to a wall ot the casing. rlhe opposite end 113 ot the lever may be engagedwith a secondary push rod 114. The rods 109 and 114 may extend through apertures 115 and 116 in the tace plates and may be provided with heads or push Vbuttons 117 and 118, respectively.
An end 119 of the push rod 109 is movable into and out from the path of movement ot a lug 121 carried by the disk 86. An inward movement of the button 117 may then be effected to position the end 119 of the push rod 109 to interrupt the movement et the disk 86 and consequently prevent an actuation of the main and auxiliary bolts. A disengagement of said rod may be effected by an inward movement of the secondary push rod 114.
. The usual additional snap latch 122 may be provided comprising a rod movable between guides Z5 and through the guide 74. The snap latch may be arranged to normally have an enlarged beveled end 123 projecting from an aperture 124 in the side 59 and the face plate ot the casing. The rod may be movable in the guide 74 and a pring 125 disposed between said guide and the end 123 may serve to normally project the latch bar. The guard may be provided with the usual aperture 126 to receive the end 123 when the lock and guard are in the proper relation as when a door is closed.
Manual means for retracting the latch bar may include a stubeshaft 127 journaled in the casing and provided with a socket 128 te receive the shank of a knob. The shaft 127 may have a lever arm 129 projecting therefrom and adapted to engage with an en- Lezama larged end 131 of the latch 122, whereby air oscillatory movement et the shaft when'produced by rotation of the `knob will serve to retract said latch. A spring 133 positioned on an arcuate rod 134 secured to the arm 129 acts to return the arm to its initial position for contact with the end 131. The ends of the spring 133 may engage with a guide 135 secured to the casing and with the arm 129. Although an arcuate spring is illustrated for :returning the knob barrel, it is obvious that other well-known types of springs may be employed, such, tor example, as a leaf-spring. n such case, suitable provision may be readily made by those skilled in the art for adapting the present knobbarrel to such a spring.
It desired, the bolt may be projectedmanually. 1n such case the knob or key barrel may be turned in a direction opposite to that employed in retracting the bolt 16. Obviously, in reversing the rotation ot the key cylinder or knob barrel Jfor manual projection et the bolt 16, the arms 34 or 94,respectively, will engage the pins 103 and 97, respectively.
' ris shown in Fig. 7, my invention may be practiced by providing a main bolt 136 with a single projecting end 137 from which the lock bar 37 ot the auxiliary bolt is projectible. rlhe end 137 ot the main bolt 136 may, in this case, passthrough an aperture 133 in a keeper 139 and when the lock bar 37 is projected from the main bolt a barrier will be provided against a return ot said main bolt until the lock actuating mechanism is properly operated. A. catch .comprising a head stud 139, sildably mountn ed in the side of the casing, may. be provided tor holding the bolt 16 in its retracted position. A projection 140 may be provided on the bolt 16 with which the stud' may cooperate. By pushing inwardly on the stud it may be positioned forwardly ot the projection on the bolt to vhold the latter in its retracted position and also to render the releasing means ineffective.

The inner end 141 of the releaser bar may be provided with a pin 142 disposed in a cam slot 143 of a lever 144 pivoted at 145 in the casing. The lower end of the lever 144 carries a pin 146 engaging in a cam slot 147 at the endY ot' a pawl or tumbler 148 pivoted at'149 in the casing. The pawl or tumbler may engage a member 152, such as a recess in the main bolt 16, and tor that purpose may be provided with a projection or toothll.`
