This invention relates to improvements in holders particularly adapted, though not necessarily limited in its use, for holding electrodes, rods, or wires employed in arc Welding, and one of the objects of the invention is to provide an improved device of the character which will be compact and simple in construction and adapted for ease in manipulation, and in which device the electrode or wire will be firmly held or clamped without the use of a screw or springs for clamping the wire.
A further object is to provide an improved device of this character embodying clampin members between which the rod or w1re is eld, the clamping members being slightly resilient, one with relation to the other, to
compensate varying sizes of rods, or wires. A further object is to provide an improved device of this character in which the aws or clamping members will be frictionally maintained in their relative a justed posi: tion.
A further object is to provide in a device of this character an improved handle and improved means for securing one of the conductors to the device for passing a current through the electrode or wire To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects as will appear, the invention consists in the features of novelty in substantially the construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts, hereinafter more fully described and claimed and shown in the accompanying drawing illustrating the invention, and in which 5 Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 10*designates generally a body portion, one, end of which is provided with a goose-neck formation 11, to a portion of which is secured a jaw 12.
To the other end of the body portion 10 is'secured a handle 13 which is of any suitable insulating materiahand is tubular in construction to permit of one end of-an electrical conductor 14 to pass therethrough.

The body portion 10 may be of any desired length and configuration and slidably mounted thereupon is a movable jaw 18, in proximity to the jaw 12 to co-operate therewith for clamping a rod or wire 19 therebetween. Thej aw portion of the extremity 11- of the body is preferably of a slightly resilient nature so as to compensate rods or electrodes of .The jaw 18 isslidablymounted upon the body 10 in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a screw or bolt 20 which passes through an elongated slot 21 in the 'body portion of the jaw 18. The head 22 of the bolt is disposed adjacent a lateral face 23 of the body of the aw 18, and disposed between the head or bolt and the face 23 is a washer *like device 24 which contacts with thesurface 23. An elastic or resilient elev ment 25, preferably in the form of a split spring washer, is disposed between the head '22 of the bolt and theelement 2 1 and tends normally to create friction upon the surface 23 of the jaw 18. i
The bolt is held 'in position preferably by means of a nut 26 engaging the extremity of the bolt and contacting with the other face of the body 10. "The surface 23 of the jaw 18 is beveled or inclined so that when the jaw 18 is moved ina direction toward the jaw 12, the stress of the resilient element 25'will be increased so as to cause the eleelement 24 upon the surface 23 to be do icreased.
Any suitable means may be provided for sliding the jaw 18 upon the body 10. A simple'and eflicient means embodies a bellcrank lever 27 which is pivotally mounted as at 28 upon the body portion 10. A lug 29 is carried by one end of the bell-crank lever imity 'to the handle 13 and in a convenient position for the operator while holding'the tool.
By swinging the bell-crank lever 27 about its pivot 28 the jaw 18 may be given a sliding movement toward and away from the jaw 12. a
With this improved construction it will be manifest that a simple and efficient device for holding an electrode or wire for electric weldin' will be provided, and the Wire or ,electro e will be clamped in the holder'without the use of springsor screws usuallyem= ployed for clamping the electrode. As the jaw 18 is moved toward the jaw -12 the resilient elements 25 and 24: will co-operate with the inclined surface 23 on the aw to automatically tighten or clamp the jaw 18 in its adjusted position.
By theprovision of the inclined surface 23 on the bodyportion of the jaw 18, the wire or electrode may be readily released when'desired by. pushing the lateral surface of the electrode against the work or any suit able stop. This will cause thejaw 18 to readily yield and during such movement the bell crank lever 27 will be swungabout its pivot 28 to permit ofsuch movement of the jaw 18, thereby obviatihg the necessity of the operator using the other hand to swing the lever 27 This allows the operator to have one of his handsfree for other purposes. If desired an additionalfriction creating device embodying a spring washer 32- and an element 33 may beprovided'under the head 34 of the pivot bolt 28 for creating considerable friction between the bell-crank lever 27 and the adjacent face of the body portion 10 of the holder.
While the preferred form of the invention has been herein shown and described, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement-of the several parts, within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of this invention. 1
What is claimed as new is :v f
1. A holder of-the character described including a handle, a fixed jaw, connected with the handle, a movable jaw cos-operatingwith the fixed jaw, means for actu ating the movable jaw, and means for frictionally V, maintaining the said movablejaw in its adjusted position with respect to the Lear-era movable jaw, and means for frictionally maintaining the said movable jaw in its adjusted position with respect to the fixed jaw, one of said jaws being slightly 'yieldable with respect to the other jaw to compensate varying sizes of rods or wire clamped by the jaws. A holder of the character described including a handle, a fixed jaw connected with the handle, a movable jaw co-operating with the fixed jaw, means for actuating the movable jaw, means for frlctionally maintaining the said movable jaw in its adjusted position with respect to the fixed jaw, and means for securing an electric conductor to the holder.
4. A ,holder of the character described in cludmg a handle, a fixed jaw connected with the handle, a movable jaw co-operating wit-h the fixed jaw, means for actuating the movable jaw, means for friction-ally maintaining the said movable jaw iii its adjusted position with respect to the fixed jaw, and means for securing an electric conductor to the holder, the said conductor passing through the said handle.
