The invention relates to improvements inpermutation locking mec'hanism16 is mountlocksand more particularly to. keepers thereed on the plate 13 and includes'an assembly for,and the'present application discloses a of looking members 17"ha-ving laterallyprokeeper which is primarily intended for use jecting arms 18 which may be turned bythe 5 in connection withhxpermutation' locking controlmembers 19 and 20, sothat all of n1eans, such as that shown by my U. In asflthe case may be,,and when said arms; are the patented construction, the locking means alined with feacli other. as shown in .FigureQ, included .a plurality of coaxially mounted being at thatt-ime alined with thejlateral 1 0 locking- -members having laterally projecting portion 12 :.ofthe keeper opening,-they may 7 arms,-'all' of s which could pass throughf an passthrough thisopeningyif it is nototlier opening 'in a keeper plate, when said arms. wise obstructed, .so as to permit outward were aimed by manipulation of a pairizof swinging of the plate'13 andconsequent-disrotatable members. "Thus, eventhough' soinehunani Figurei5 iis a top plan view of the guard ,thorizedwperson should succeed in learning plate. 1 r 1 y the necessary combination to aline the arms In the drawings above briefly described, A 18 with the portion 12 of the keeper plate and B designate two memberstobelocked opening, saidarmscould not at that time together. comprises .a centrally disposed body porseen in Figure 2. Means-are of course protion 11 and a laterally extending portion 12. vided whereby this guard plate may be *ro-. The numeral 13 designates an outer plate tated' from the exterior of the lock. Pr-eferably, the 'roller 31-is provided with-gear teeth to engage the teeth of the tla-nge24r. Any desired means may be employed for rotatably supporting this when but Iprefer tomake use of a'short shaft 32 havingits outer end mounted in an opening in'the flange 10, while .its inner end is supported :by an appropriate bearing bra ketBi-l, secured. to the inner side of said flange.
The peripheral portion. of the guardplate 21, is provided with a plurality of num bers or other suitable indicating characters (see Figures 1 and 5) and these characters are visible one at a time, through aview opening 34 in the two plates 9 and 13. The legitimate operator of the lock knows exactly what character must appear in the opening 351:, in; order torthe portion 23 of the guard plate opening to be in alinement with the portion 12 of the keeper plate ope-ning, and hence by turning the knob until that character appears, he may readily release the lock. -Obviously, the, arms" 18 may be alined and properly positioned by manipulttiono-t the control 'memb'ers' 19 and 20, either before .or after the guard plate. 1 is set at released position.
Excellent results 7 have been obtained iro n the details disclosed and they are preferably followed. However,.within the scopeot't he invention-as claimed, variations may of course be made.
I claim: 7
1-. In a lock,a keeper plate having an opening, an ou ter plate engageable with the outer side of said keeper plate, permutation locking means mounted on said outer plate and including locking member mov able through the opening of the keeper plate, a plate atthe inner side of saidi keeper opening through which to insert a locking member, said keeper plate having a later- .-.ally projecting continuous flange, a guard plate at the inner side of said keeper plate 7 having an opening which is. adapted to be moved either into or out of alinement with thenkeeper plate opening to form an additional lockinghmeans, said guard plate being,.'of circular outline and having its peripheral portion in engagement with and surrounded by saidtflange to be guided in its rotary movement thereby, and. means for supporting said guard plate rotating it. :23.
