VThe invention relates tov improvements in Cotter pins of the generaltype provided with two arms connected at one end by an eyeand adapted for passage through an opening in a bolt or the like, said arms being malleable so that'their free ends may be laterally bent, to
against withdrawal. Ordinarily, when using Cotter pins of the type about referred to, difiiculty is encounin spreading and@ p y ends, on account of the factthat the said ends Contact tightly with yeach other andan instrument cannot readily be 'twen them, to effect the bending operation. It is the object of my invention to provide in which at least oneof the arms is provided ceiving opening when the pin is inserted, said means serving` 'to spread Y the arms apart,so that they are readily ac- -cessible for bending. v
Y iththe foregoing in view, the invention i,
resides in the novel' subject matter h ereinafter described and claimed,`the description being supplemented by the acompanying drawing. f v Y Figure l is an endelevation of a nut and bolt, illustrating the improved Cotter pin partially inserted. v
igure2 is a transverse section through the pin as indicated by line 2 2 of Fig@Y ure 1.
Figure 3 is an elevation of the Vbolt and nut, partly broken away and in section,
showing the pin fully inserted and disclosing the manner in which its free ends are then I separated.
Figure 4 is an end elevation ofthe boltl and nut, showing the cotter pin'secured in place by bending its ends.
Figure 5 is a side elevation of the nut,` bolty and Cotter pin in the relation showninFigure 1. y
The preferred form of construction is illustrated in the 'acompanying drawing and this construction will be herein specifically withdescribed, with the understandingthat in the scope of the invention as claimed, va'- riationsmay be made.
bending their freev 'contact slidably inserted be Y construction,
the free ends of in g them yin the usual way,
,InY construct-ing the pin, 1I make use of a single length] of wire. This wire is bent ,substantially upon itself at its center, to proprof Y arms 7 and y8 )ecting from said` eye, these arms being adapted .for `insertion through anyof thel well known openings adapted for VCotter pin hown in Figure 2, both arms 7 and Sare of semi-circular cross section and are provided with flat inner sides 9 which with each other. Near the eye 6, the arm 8 is provided lwith a laterally bowed portion 10 which is adapted'to engage the wall of the pin receiving opening, when the Cotter pin is forced through saidopening, said portion l0 then serving to slide the arms .7 and l8 upon each other, so as 'to spread theirfree ends apart, as shown in Figure 3.l Thus, these gageable by a pair'of pliers or any other d e- `sired tool, for the purpose of laterally bendv as shown in Figure 4, preventing accidental movement of `the pin from the opening. j i
It will be seen from 'the foregoingy that the cotends are readily enf inventionv is exceptionally simple Y and when in- A cotter pin formed lfroma single length of wire bent substantially upon itself at lits andtwo arms pyro-` I g slidably with each other, atleast one of said arms having a laterally bowed portion nearthe eye to engage the same plane.
bowed portion being disposed i whereof I lhave hereunto
