rear of the vehicle for indicating to the v'ehicles following that achange of direction j is to be made. Another object is toy provide a signa-lling deviceatftlie rear of' .the vehicle which is oper able from the operators seat.
rEhe above and other objects will become io apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named f parts in the drawing. y Referring Vbriefly to the drawing, Figure l1 is a longitudinal partly sectioned eleva- 15 tional view of one of the signal devices, said devices being applied in pairs to the vehicle.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view of a vehicle shown in broken lines having signals applied thereto. y
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral indicates a hollow casing. 1t vis to be noted that these casings are to be duplicated, one for each side of the vehicle at the rear. One of the casings has a rela tively large annular' housing 11 secured to the rear side. Said annular housing is surinounted by a smaller. h'ousing12.
Both housings 11 and 12 have an open face which is covered with glass 13. On the glass in the smaller housing, the word Go is inscribed, and on the glass covering the larger housing, the word Stop is inscribed.A These'housings are provided with filament lamps not shown `on the drawing which are actuated in the'usual -inanner to illuminate alternately the housings. The
same casing which carries the Vhousings 11 and 12 has a post 14 secured thereto which extends upwardly and has va reflector 15 mounted at its upper end.. Vilithin the reiector, a filament lamp 16 is fixed. One end of the casing 10 is closed by a wall 17, the opposite end being open and cut away to provide two spaced-apart parallelV extending side walls 18 and 19 between which a pair of semi-circular tongues 20 form part of a movable housing 21. A short spindle 22 is fixed in the tongues and has a bevelled gear 23 secured thereon. Thisspindle is rotatably journalled in openings provided in the parallel walls 18 and 19 and permits the housing 21 to be rotated from the hor-izontal to the vertical when theI bevelledl gear 23 Vis rotated. A shaft 24 extends thru the entire length of the housingfrom one e'ndto the other. .One end' vof this shaft. has. a bev'elled pinion 'gear' 25 fixedthereon'A which meshes with gear 2?).4 This shaft is.
supported inv bearings' 26"lo`cated near opposite ends 'of the casing. Tliejend of the shaft opposite to wher`e"the"pi`nion' 125 isv vlop- TENT- oiFlfrCE. i
@ma receives an additional gear- '27 which;
is engaged'tby another'- gea'r 28]nmuntenonn `a shaft 29. The shaft 29 extends at right angles to the shaft 24 forwardly in the body v of thecar'to the operators compartment, at
which end crank arms 30 are mounted.` The housing 29v is fashioned as an arrow pointing outwardly and hasa glass faceBl on which the word Turn32 is inscribed. The housing is adapted to have mounted therein a filament lamp, not shown on the drawing, which is selectively illuminated thru a circuit and switch located in nient.
The signalling device is used 'for indicating a change of direction of thevehicle onv which said device is mounted. vThen desiring to turn left, the shaft 29 of the left casing is rotated in the proper direction.
Rotation of this shaft is communicated to the lgears 128 and 27, which latter being fixed to theshaft- 24, rotates it, causing the pinion 25 fixed on. the opposite end of the shaft and meshing with the gear 23 to rotate the latter and swing the housing 21 from the position.
shown in dotted lines in Figure 1 to the Vhorizontal position illustrated in full lines. At the saine instant, a switch may be closed by the operator to illuminate the area behind the glass face V31 of the particular housinO so that a` visible signal is given. y
It is to be noted that changes Vin construction may be'made without departing from the spirit `and scope of the invention.
1. A ,signallingl device comprising a. rotatable housing fashioned asl an arrow, a glass,`
face in said housing, a casing supporting Vsaid housing, ysaid casing havingaJ fork at `one' end, tongues on said movable housing positioned intermediate sai-d fork, a spindle rotatably journalled in said fork and rigid with saidcasing, a bevel gear on said spindle and means engaging said gear to rotate/said vthe operators compartv housing `from the vertical to the Vhorizontal Y K position or vice versa. y
2. A signallingdevice comprising a rotatvable housino` fashioned as an arrow, a glass face in said housing, a casing .supporting said housing, said casing having a. pair of vertical parallel spaced-apart walls atone end, tongues on`said movable housing positioned between the parallel walls of the casing, a spindle rotatablyjournalledA in said Y Vwalls and rigid with said casing, a bevelled gear Yrigid with saidV spindle adjacent one tongue of the housing, a shaft rotatable in said casing, gears'. on both ends of said shaft, and means fork rotating said shaft from'the o erators osition in the vehicle end, tongues on said movable housing positioned between the parallel walls of the oasing, a spindle rotatably Yjournalled in said i walls and rigid with said casing, a bevelled gear rigid with said spindle. adjacent Vone tongue of the housing, said casing7 gears on both ends of said shaft, a shaft exten-ding at right angles to the ii-rstnamed shaft, a gear fixed to said last-named shaft in the housing meshing with one of the gears on the first-named shaft, and a crank karm at the opposite end of the last-named shaft for rotating the latter toV rotate the movable housing from the horizontal to the:
vertical position or vice versa.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature. GODFRIED SCHOCK.` Y
