and a fixed head 18 at the opposite end thereof. Surrounding the axle 16 and bearing against the head 18 is a coiled expansion spring 19 and this spring engages the plate 13 and causes both plates to frictionally engage Vthe casing 8. The expansive force of the spring binding the plate 12 against the inner ,face of the casing 8 prevents the traveler from accidentally sliding on the guide casing. Y l

Journaled in the wall 9 and theY casing 8 are equally spaced shafts 22 and rotatable Von said shafts are gear wheels 23, 241 and 25 tially radially disposed-lifting ribs 26, said ribs being arranged or mounted at the margmal portions of the gear, wheels and on kthose faces thereof confronting the guide casing 8 so that said ribs 'may engage the roller 17 of the traveler and elevate or lower said traveler. The transfer of the traveler from onefset of ribs 26 to an adjacent set is accomplished when the sets of ribs vertically aline, as shown in Fig. 3, and the outer ends of the ribs are recessed or shaped to provide overlapping tongues 27 which will engage and move the roller 17. Assuming that the gear wheels 24: are rotating in the direction of the arrow Fig. 3, the tongues 27 of the left hand ribs 26 will push 'the roller in the direction of the arrow, but since the wheels 15 guide the traveler in the slot 11 the tongues 27 will push the traveler upwardly in lthe slot. The traveler will. be elevated by the uppermost gear wheel4 261v and eventually pass from under the inliuence of this gear wheel to the next gear wheel, and on until the traveler reaches the upper end of the slot 11 at the gear wheel 23. Ey reference to Figs. 1 and 5 it will be noted that the curved walls of the slot 11 are described on arcs approximating the peripheries of the gear wheels and! the reverse arrangement or sinuous contour of the slot walls is necessary on account 0f Some of the Vgear wheels Arotating clockwise and others counterclockwise, but irrespective of the direction of rotation thev with short circumferentially disposed slots 33 and extending into said slots are radially disposed pins 34 so that said winding arbor may, at times, shift said sleeve.
About the sleeve 32 are coiled springs 35 and mounted on said sleeve, between the springs 35, is a gear wheel 36 meshing with the gear wheel 23. T he springs 35 have end convolutions 37 mounted in the sleeve 32 and other end convolutions 38 extending into the slot-s 33, these slots Vbeing two in number as shown in Figure 8. Fixed in the auxiliary casing 28 about the springs 35 are cylindrical brake members 39 and the inner walls of these vmembers are adapted to be engaged by the convolutions of the springs 35, said springs'serving as brake shoes against vthe brake members to retard rotation of the winding' arbor 29 and it is through the medium of the slots 33 that end convolutions of the springs are held so that Vsaid springs may be distended against the brake members, also retracted to permit of the winding arborl 29 and the sleeve 32 being rotated Without the spring convolutions dragging on the brake member.
The shaft 22 of the gear wheel 25 extends into the spring housing 4() on the wall 9 and in said spring housing is a band spring `11 having one end thereof attached to the housing and the opposite end attached to the shaft 22 of the gear Wheel 25. When theV gear wheel 25 is rotated by lowering the sash 3 the spring 41 is placed under tension so that its expansive force may be utilized to assist in elevating the sash.
In operation, turning of the winding arbor 29 will coil or retractthe springs 35 and through the medium of the gear 'wheelv 36 the train of gears within the guide casing 8 will be placed in operation. The traveler supporting the lower edge of the sash 3 will be raised or lowered with its roller transferred from one gear wheel to others, such transfer taking place when the lifting members 26 aline and this is accomplished with practically the same ease as though the traveler were manually lifted. by a single hoisting element. When the winding arbor is released-the springs 35 expand due to the relative movement between the sleeve 32 Vand the winding arbor 29 and said springsv is obvious that the springs 35 may be rectangular in cross section or otherwise shaped so as to positively grip walls of the brake members 39.
Then lowering the sash 3 the spring 41 will be wound so that its expansive force may assist in raising the sash, and the constant tendency of this spring to elevate the Sash will prevent', in conjunction with the brake mechanism, accidental lowering of the sash. The two last mentioned devices will also contribute to anti-rattling ofthe raising and lowering mechanism, and While in the drawings there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such changes7 in size, shape and manner of assembling as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

A. `sash regulating device comprising a casing, a train of gear Wheels in said casing, a traveler supported by said casing and adapted to be shifted by said train of gear wheels and shifted from one gear wheel to another, said traveler Vengaging the sash to be raised or lowered, and a winding arbor adapted to be turned to operate the train of gear wheels.

and means actuated by one of said gear setting said train of gea-rs in motion, a set of members on each gear wheel disposed so that during al revolution of the gear wheel the set of members may aline with the mem. bers of an adjacent gearwheel, a traveler adapted to shift theV sash, and means to maintain said traveler in engagement `with one lset of members so that it may be transferredto an adjacent set of members.
