My invention, relates. t'oiiinprofven ntsdn H onnection with siphon p pes employe' for carrying off air andthewatei-"of condensation from. the interiors of urymg-eylinders or di iims, such as are commonly used in textile,
pa'per; an d' othie'r mills, a-n d 're s ids particularlv' in a s lIZLl s or nd encirclm 'a" s1 hon M I, "plpe wlthin a tubular case,*-a-n"d introduced or plug mounted on said pips, =sai'd;11iig bg of a 'screwecap on said' case: all-substantially as 'hereinafterPset forth rag-mater detail.
'The siphon pipes, to which my invention applies, p ass throughhfollobearing boxes,
and the primary objectfof said invention is [to provide such a bearing box with a packbox equipped with means to produce 'a yielding 'ten'sibn on thecQmpre'sSion 1nein-" berorjfollower for "the; packing, to the end thatilsaid follower is self ad iustirig' and any i if wear; or change, in theconditiori'of said pack fmgis' comp'ensated'for, without;requirement for frequent adjustment of the" pressure means. In the old type"of'packing'box, 'n anual adjustment of the follower is 'fre- 'quently required,frequent1y*as oftenfsas' once Y t i -ri ng f8 'which enters' anzannular space provided between the 'sha ftfl and thebearing box 4: to receive the packing 7 and is for the steam and water-tight joint between the cylinder shaft and bearing.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the course of the following description.
I attain the objects and secure the advan rages of my invention by the means illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal, vertical section through a packing box for siphon pipes, which embodies a practical form ofmy invention, and, Fig. 2, a side elevation of a drying cylinder and associated parts and uneinbe'rs, illustrating the appli cation: thereto' of 4 said invention, this view being on a 1 smaller scale diam-the fir-Stview.
I Similar reference ch'a'ia eters designate similar parts throughoutthe several views.
- In the, drawings, a portion of a drying cyln rd er or'drum 1s representedgat 1, apor tion da ho11ow shaftinerefor at 2, a spur Y V gear at-B' for driving sald'sha-ft anddnum, a between a follower and an adjustrn'g sleeve.
box 4, andpasses tl'ier'efro'm into the drum 1 through" the hollow shaft 2'. Thediameter ofthe slphon pipefi is smaller than that of the passage through the shaft Qyand said pipe isbent downward ly within the d-rum'l untilthe inner end of said wine is quite close to the lower side of saiddrum. The pipe 5 after leaving the hollow shaft 2 passes outwardly beyond the hol lov bearing L and the "follower 6 i s'mounted' on said pipe in positron --to "bear against packing whicl'i -sur- *rounds' the outerterminal of said shaft, such terminal protruding from that portion. of
.saidbe'ari ng which fdir'ectly. supports the shaft i nt'o an-enlarged chamber in said bearing. The "follower 6 consists in part of a purpose of forcing said packing tightly against said shaft to prevent leakage of steam and water between said shaft and box. It is this joint that my invention is designed to keep tight at allltimes. The siphon pipe '90 5 is for the purpose of permitting the confined'air and the water of condensation in, the drum 1 to be driven therefrom by the incoming steam; r I 4 The parts and members thus far described, both structurally and functionally, are old and Well known; 7
The bearing box lis provided at the outer end with an interiorly screw-threadedflange 9, and a tubular member or case 10, is pro-' vided at one end with an enlarged head 11 1 which is adapted to'fit into said flange, said head beingexteriorly screw-threaded to engage the screwthreaols onthe flange. The i i I tubular case 10 is externally screw-threaded at the outer terminal to receive a screw cap 12-v Locat dnpar ly in. theca e 0v and part the case 10. The pipe 5, extends through the case 10 and the follower 13 and out through the outer end of the cap 12, and a spiral spring 15 is mounted on said pipe between 1 said follower and the follower 6, there pref erably being a pair of packing-rings 16 and a metallic washer 16 introduced between the adjacent ends of said first-named follower and said spring. A portion of the spring 15 is in the case lOand another portion thereof in the hollow bearing 4:, and the packingring 16 and washer 16 are in said case, said washer being next to said spring.
It isnow evident that the spring 15, which is always under compression from the fol lower 13 and the screw cap 12, exerts a yielding pressure on the follower 6, and forces the latter tightly against the packing 7, with the result that said packing is forced against the joint between the shaft 2 and the box 4. Since such pressure-is yielding, the follower 6 automatically adjusts itself to the packing '7, and there is provided automatic compensationfor wear or other change in the condition of said packing. Occasionally, as
the contacting and rubbing parts wear, the
a cap 12 is screwed farther onto the case 10,
and, thereby, through the medium of the follower 1'3 and the intervening packingrings 16 and washer 16*, increases the compression of the spring 15, thus causing the follower ring 8 to be forced tighter or harder against the packing 7 I The screw cap 12, with the associated parts and members, besides affording means for increasing the pressure of the spring 15, also enables said spring initially to be compressed to just the extent required, and to be maintained under the desired degree of compression.
The removal of the pipe 5 and the follower 6 from the drum land the bearing box 4: is easily effected merely by unscrewing the head 11 of the case 10 from the flange 9 of said box. I I i "It is understood, of course, that the drum 1 revolves with its shaft 2, but that the pipe 5 is stationary.
More orless change in matters of detail may be made in this device without departing from the spirit of my invention orexceeding the scope of what is claimed.
vWhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, in a packing box of the class described, with a drum mounted on a hollow shaft, a bearing box for said shaft,
said box having a screw-threaded flange at the outer end, a siphon pipe of less diameter than the shaft passage and extendingthrough said passage, packing on said shaft in said bearing box, and a follower mounted on said pipe in position to compress said packing, of a case encircling said pipe and provided with a screw-threaded head to engage said flange, a screw cap mounted on the outer terminal of said case, through which cap said pipe extends, a follower mounted on said pipe partially within said case and partially within said cap, in position to be moved inwardly by said cap, and having an enlarged head at theouter end to prevent such end from entering said case, a spring extending from the inner end of said second named follower in said case to said first-named follower in said bearing box, and a packing-ring and a washer mounted on said pipe between adjacent ends of said second-named follower and spring.
