My invention relates to stoker apparatus and'it has particular relation to air backs.
One object of my invention is to provide novel means for preventing the adhering of clinkers to the walls of a furnace and particularly to the side walls.
Another object ofmy invention is to provide an air back, wherein the rat-i0 of the air-cooling surface to the heat-absorbing surface is extremely large.
A further object of my invention is to provide an air back, the exposed surface of which comprises a large number of small and easily renewable parts.
With these and other objects and applications in mind, my invention further consists in the details of construction and operation and arrangement, hereinafter described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein,

In the illustrated form of embodiment of my invention shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, an air back 1 is mounted on a support ing plate 2, a lower end of which is secured to beams 3 constituting the lower supportlng framework of a furnace 4. The upper end of the supporting plate 2iis secured to a front Wall '5 of the furnace 4 immediately adjacent to a stoker opening 6 therein. VVhil'e the air back 1 is shown in connection with the side wall of the furnace 4, it is also applicable to other portions of the furnace requiring such protection. The air back 1 may comprise a rear wall 7 and a base 8 centrally divided to form an upper section 9 and a lower section 10. A shoulder 11 extending from the lower section 10 serves to cover the line of connection between the rear wall sections, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper and lower plates 9 and 10 may be rigidly secured to the supporting plate 2 by means of bolts 12 (Fig. 3) which extend from the supporting plate 2 up through perforations 13 of an air back 1 having a. plurality of tortuous air-outlet paths, whereby an extremely large ratio of air cooling surface to heat absorbing surface may be obtained. To this end, I provide a plurality of overlapping vertically inclined sections 17 and upper and lower end sections 1 8 and 19, respectively.
As illustrated in Figs. 17, 18 and 19, each of the sections 17 comprises a vertically inclined main body portion 21 and a horizontal top portion 22, which terminates in a depending lug 23, the top portion 22 resting on an upper edge 24 of the rear wall 7 and the lug 23 engaging a portion of the rear wall 7, immediately adjacent thereto, thereby providing a detachable mounting for the upper end of the main body portion 21. The latter may comprise longitudinally off-set front and rear portions 25 and 26, respectively, which are interconnected by an'angled portion 27 The lower end of the main body portion 22 may be supported in position by means of a depending hook 28, which extends rearwardly from the rear off-set portion 26 so as to engage a longitudinally extending flange 29 formed on the upper side of the outer edge 15 of the base 8.
The sections 17 are so disposed that the rear off-set portion 26 of one section overlaps the front off-set portion of the next section. Also the vertical edge of the front off-set portion 25 is so formed as to lie in a plane parallel to the adjacent side of the angled portion 27. Thus a plurality of channels 31 are formed intermediate successive sections extending from the inside of the air box 1 into the furnace 4. As illustrated in Fig. 1, the several sections 17 are mounted in an inclined position to prevent siftings working through the air channels 31 into the interior of the air box 1. Successive pairs of the sections 17 may be held in the spaced relation necessary to form the air passages 31 by providing ribs or fins 32 which extend from the rear side of the front off-set por: tion 2550 as to engage the adjacent surfaces of the receding section. The ribs 32 may be vertically spaced and are so inclined that in the assembled arrangement shown in Fig. 1, they lie in substantially horizontal planes.
The lower end section 19 of the front wall of the air back 1 is shown in detail in Figs. 10, 11 and 12 and it comprises an angular shell 33 having one side 34 formed to constitute the lower end wall of the air back 1. The side 34 engages a curved lower edge of the rear wall 7, as shown in Fig. 1. A front wall 35 engages an adjacent edge portion 15 of the base 8, and it may be removably secured in position by means of a locking tongue 36 which extends into an opening 20 (Fig. 4) in the base 8. An edge 37 of the end section 19 may be formed with an offset portion 38 and an angled portion 39, whereby an air outlet passage may be formed corresponding to the air passages 31, asillustrated particularly in Fig. 2.
Additional air outlet passages from the lower end of the air back 1 may be obtained by providing the walls 34 and 35 of the lower-end section 19 with a plurality of perforations40, the outside diameters of which are greater than the inside diameters, thereby preventing the wedging of siftings there'- in. The ratio of air-cooling surface to headabsorbing surface in the lower end of the air back 1 may be increased by providing a plurality of horizontally extending ribs or fins 41 which are disposed on the inner side of the walls 34 and 35.
My invention further contemplates an air back, wherein the renewable parts or sections are detachably locked in position. With such end in view, the rear wall 7 of the air box 1 is provided with a plurality of inwardly extending lugs 42 having aligned slots 43 in the ends thereof. In order to reinforce the rear wall 7, certain of the lugs 42, say, every third one, is extended to provide a vertical web or fin 44. The lower web 44 adjacent to the end section 19 may be provided with a recess 45 in one face thereof rather than a slot, said recess being in alignment with the several slots 43 and forming an abutment for one end of a locking pin 46, a remaining end of which is disposed in the slot 43 of the next adjacent lug 42, all as shown in Figs. 1 to 9, inclusive.
Each of the removable sections or parts 17 is provided with a rearwardly extending lug 47 havinga slotted end 48 adapted to receive the locking pin 46 when mounted in position on the rear wall 7. The lug 42 immediately adjacent to the lower flange 44 is so spaced therefrom as to permit the lugs 47 of, say, two sections to embrace the locking pin 46. The remaining lugs 42 are so spaced that the locking lugs of three of the removable sections 17 may embracethe locking pin 46. It is to be understood, however, that my invention is not necessarily limited to such arrangement, which has been described merely to facilitate the descri tion and understanding of the fundamenta features of my invention.
In assembling the removable sections 17 on the air back 1, after the lower-end section 19 has been placed in position, the first two sections 17 are mounted on the rear wall 7 and the base 8 and the first locking pin 46 is then inserted in the aligned slots. Thus the first two sections 17 are locked in position. However, the locking pin 46 does not interfere with such longitudinal movement of the sections 17 as results from changes in furnace temperature. Similarly, the next three of the removable sections 17 are mounted on the air back 1 and a second looking pin 46 positioned in the aligned slots, and so on until the exposed front wall of the air back 1 is extended up to the end of the upper section 9 of the air back 1. The latter end is closed by the end section 18 which is illustrated in detail in Figs. 13 to 16, inclusive. The structure therein shown comprises an end wall 49, which engages an adjacent end of the rear wall 7,"and a front wall 51 which engages the adjacent edge 15 of the base 7. A locking tongue 52 may extend into an opening 53 formed in an adjacent end portion of the base 8.
-An edge 54 of the end section 18 is provided with a beveled portion 55 lying in a plane parallel to that of the angled portion 27 of the next adjacent section 17, and it is spaced therefrom by a plurality of vertically spaced ribs or fins 56 corresponding to the spacing ribs 32 of the sections 17 whereby an air channel may be maintained similar to that between the preceding sections. The cooling surface ofthe upper section 18 may be further increased by flanges 57. The
disposed adjacent to the furnace front wall 4 as to extend partly under the same. The resulting space between the upper end of the air back 1 and the furnace wall 4: may be closed by a filling material 62 comprising,
say, a mixture of asbestos and clay.
The base 8 may be provided with air inlet openings 63 in addition to the previously mentioned openings 20 and 53., all of which are connected to a source of air under pressure (not/shown). When air under pressure is supplied to the air back 1 through the several openings 20, 53 and 63 in the base 8 thereof, the air flows from the interior of the air back 1 into furnace through the several air passages 31 between the sections 17 as well as through the tapered perforations 58 and 39 in the upper and lower end sections 18 and 19, respectively, resulting in the cooling of the front wall of the air back 1 and thereby preventing the fusing of ashes and clinkers thereto.
While I have shown only one form of embodiment of my invention, for the purpose 1 of describing the same and illustrating the principles of construction and operation and arrangement thereof, it is apparent that various changes and modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit of my invention.- I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be imposed thereon, as are indicated in the appended claims or as are demanded by the prior art.

An air back comprising an elongated chamber having a rear wall, a front wall, and a base, the latter being provided with openings for the reception of air under pressure, said front wall comprising a plurality of removable sections, certain of which have an inwardly extending portion provided with a recess, a plurality of cooperating projections extending from said rear wall and provided with recesses, and locking pins disposed in said recesses.
4. An air back comprising an elongated chamber having a rear wall, a front wall,- said front wall comprising a plurality of removable sections, a plurality of said sections having a recessed portion, a plurality of cooperating recessed portions extending from said rear wall, and locking pins disposed in said recesses, there being a locking pin for each pair of rear wall projections.
5. An air back comprising a rear wall, a base and a front wall, the front wall comprising a plurality of sections removably mounted on said rear Wall and said base, and means for looking said sections in position, said means including a sectional locking element;

In a furnace, a side Wall air back comprising a rear wall, a base and a front wall, a central portion of the latter comprisinga plurality of removably mounted sections so spaced as to form passages permitting air to issue from said air back in sheets, said front wall also including detachably mounted end sections provided with air outlet passages, and a sectional locking element for said central wall portions.
7. In a furnace, a side wall air back comprising a rear wall, a base and a front wall, a central portion of the latter comprising a plurality of removably mounted sections so spaced as to form air outlet passages, said front wall also including detachably mounted end sections, a furnace wall, one of said end sectionshaving a lower edge adjacent to said base extended beyond the latter into proximity to said wall, and means for sealing the joint between said furnace wall and said extended portion.
8. An air back comprising an elongated chamber, one wall of which includes a plurality of spaced sections, the space between successive sections in the central portion of said wall forming air passages from said chamber, the end sections being perforated to provide additional air passages, and a plurality of pins constituting a locking element for said sections.
9. An air back comprising a chamber, one wall of which includes a plurality of sections provided with recessed portions, a plurality of coacting recessed portions carried by another wall of said-chamber, locking means removably positioned in said recesses, and a supporting plate for said walls.
10. An air back comprising an elongated chamber having a rear wall, a base and a front wall, said base having an opening for the reception of air, said front wall comprising a plurality of sections spaced to form air outlet passages, a number of said sections having an inwardly extending slotted lug, a plurality of-co-acting slotted lugs extending inwardly from said rear wall, locking means disposed in said slots for securing said sections in position, and ribs extending from said sections into said air passages.
11. An air-back comprising an elongated chamber having a rear wall, a bottom Wall and a front wall, one of said walls having an opening for the reception of air, said front wall comprising a plurality of sections spaced to form air outlet passages, certain of said sections having an inwardly extending slotted lug, a plurality of, co-acting slotted lugs extending inwardly from said rear wall, locking means disposed in said slots for securing said sections in position, and ribs extending from said sections into said air passages, the end sections of said front wall being perforated and provided with inwardly extending ribs.

An air back wherein one wall includes a, plurality of spaced sections, each section comprising laterally off-set portions and an inclined connecting portion, successive sec tions being so disposed that the rearoff-set portion of one section is adjacent to the front off-set portion ofthe next section. a,

An air back com-prising a rear plate and a base plate, a supporting plate, means for mounting said base plate on said supporting plate, a plurality of'longitudinally spaced flanges extending inwardly of said rear plate and adapted to receive removably a locking pin,- said air back also including a plurality of spaced sections extending between the upper edge of said rear wall and the outer edge of said base so as to provide a plurality of air outlet passages, a plurality of said sect-ions having an inwardly extending slotted lug, and locking pins individual to certain of said rear wall flanges and arranged to be positioned in the slots formed in said section lugs.
