My invention relates to tuyre structures for underfeed furnaces, and has for its genera-l obJects to provide tuyere structure of plate-form, simple, easily manufactured, in-4 expensive and of advantageous form, appropriate for use as center-tuyre structure of a multiple-retort stoker. And to these ends it consists in the features of construction and arrangement hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawing, Fig. lAis a perspective view of a tuyere-plate for use in a vcentertuyere structure between two retorts of a multiple-retort stoker, and vshowing fragments of the retort-margins; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line 2-2 of Fig. l, showing several such tuyere-structures assembled.
In general I form the tuylre elements as narrow plates, say from three-fourths of an inch toV an inch anda half thick overall, each comprising a bodyweb that will stand at right angles to-A the retort-axis-and that is of the requisite outline to conform' to the intended cross sectional contour of the tuyre-assembly, this body web being marginally flanged on one or both faces alongy its top and side surfaces that are to be exposed as parts of the fire-box floor but an appropriate one of the flanges being pro.- vided with openings through the flange to form the tuyres proper, while the base-portion of the body web is left flangeless and is suitably shaped to interfit with the supporting structure of the furnace and to receive the plate-retaining means.
Thus in Figs. 1 and 2 the tuyre-plates 16 are of face-contour suitable to span between the margins of parallel retorts 11- 11, each plate being symmetrical with respect to a center vertical plane. and each having its body web 17al extended downward to form the hase portion 21 apertured at 22a to receive the tie-rod 23", the top of the plate being shallowly flanged on both sides as at 18a and its oppositesideedges being flanged as at 19, but interruptedly at registering places on` opposite sides of the web, to provide the tuyeres proper 20a. In any superficial shape of the tuyreplate the body web will be deflected as at 17 along the marginal portion or portions thereof that lie closely adjacent the mouths of the tuyres proper, so as to give the tuyre openings a deflection longitudinally of the tuyere-plate assembly, as best shown in Fig. 6. So deflecting the tuyre openings to a slight angle, following the direction of fuel feed along the retort as indiycatedby the arrow in Fig. 2, tends advantageously to prevent clogging of the openings with ashes or clinkers.
It will be observed that my improved structure has great durability. simplicity and freedom from trouble. The exposed top and side surfaces of the assembly are smooth, that is, without projections or eminences to interfere with movement of the fuel, so that the construction is highly favorable to perfect combustion and freedom from adhesion of clinkers. The tuyre arrangement effectively minimizes accumulation of ash in the tuyre-openings.` so tending to maintain adequate combustion and to keep all portions of the tuyre-plate structure adequately cooled by due flow of air.` The fuel-receptive area of each plate is small compared with the great expanse of metal presented to the cooling air surface below the plate. and` all parts being integral` greatest heat conductivity is attained for carrying heat rapidly away from the fuel-receptive flanged surfaces. And. should intense heat melt away any fuel-receptive surface, no large orifice is left for the fire to fall through, since the web portions themselves are not far apart; and so the creation of holes in the fire-bed and the dumping ofv live coals into the ash-pit or under the tiebars for the tuyre-plates, is effectively prevented. v
While I have'described in detail an embodiment of my' invention` it will be understood that specific changes may be made in embodying my invention: without departure from its spirit. within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim: 7
1. A plate-tuyere element comprising a body. web of substantially uniform thickness. and a shallow marginal flange extending laterally from the body web along those sides that are to be exposed as part of the fire lbox floor. one of said flange portions being interrupted to provide tuyre openings, and said web being angularly deflected from its normal plane in said openings.
2. A plate-tuyre element for interposition between adjacent margins of spaced apart retort walls of an underfeed furnace, comprising in an integral structure, a body web shaped in sideelevation to span the space between said Walls and aord a large cooling. surface the side and top edges of which. above the walls, will be exposed to the fuel, and shallow marginal fia-nee portions along all the top and side portions of the body web that are above said Walls, such flange portions be-ing narrow to afford mininumi exposure to the furnace combustion space and being interrupted at the opposite side margins of the element to form with registering interruptions of the langes of contiguous elements laterally extending tuyres facing the retort chambers through which tuyres air to support fuel combustion and to cool the body web ma;r pass, the central top area of the flanges being uninterrupted and presenting a smooth imperforate surface. l l
3. A plate-tu re element for interposition between a jacent margins of spacedapart, parallel retorts comprising, in an integral structure, a body-web shaped in side elevation to span between and rest upon the retort-marginsand to extend above and below the plane of such support, and shallow marginal flanges extending laterally from both sides of said web along its peripheral portions that are to be exposed as part of the fire-box Hoor, both of said flanges being interruptedy at registeringy places on opposite sides of said web, where tuyre-openings are desired, and said web being angularly delected at such places out of the plane of the central portion of such web.
