T his invention relates to certain improvements in guiding devices for plate supporting beds of plate printing machines.
' In this class of machines the engraved plates are supported on beds which are given a travelling movement under inking, wiping, and impression mechanisms, these mechanisms in the usualconstructions being arranged on different sides of the rectangular frame work so that during the travel of the bed the direction of movement of the bed is changed, the bed movements being at right angles to each other. The travelling members are heavy and the change in the direction oi the movement is apt to produce a jar which causes wear of the parts, is noisy and objectionable for various reasons. Furthermore as the plate supports are usually driven by chains it has been difiicult to get shock relieving devices which would not interfere with the chains. 7
It is the especial object of the present invention to provide a simple and eflective means for guiding the plate supports as it were around the corners during its travelling movement in the machine which act to assist in guiding the support and torelieve the support of the shock or jar at the point where its direction of movement is changed, these means being of such character andso positioned that they will not interfere with the operation of the driving mechanism for the support.
It is a further object of the inventionto produce such a means which may be in stalled without requiring changing or rearrangement of the machine.
With these and other objects not specifically referred to in view, the invention con- 49 sists ii certain novel parts, arrangements,
and combinations, which will be fully described in detail in the accompanying drawings, and the novel features therebt' pointed out in the claims hereunto annexed.
In these drawings which show a preferred and a modified embodiment of the invention- Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, of a part of two adjacent sides of a power plate machine illustrating the invention and showing a bed plate approaching a corner.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the bed support after it has turned the corner.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of the corner showing the relative positi us of the guidmg device and the driving mechanism for the bed plate.
Figure d is a plan view similar to that shown in Fig. 1,. showing a modified embodiment oi the invention.
Figure 5 is a sectional view, the section being taken on line 55 of Fig- 4, and
Figure 6 is a detail plan'view of the cam shown in Figs. t and 5. Referring now to these drawings, there is provided a suitable frame work 1' sup ported in any suitable manner, this frame work carrying the various parts of the mechanism. This frame supports the bed plate 2 on which the plate 3 is mounted. The bed plate is given. a travelling movement around the frame under the various inking, wiping, and impression members, not illustrated, in the particular construction illustrated by means of a chain 4. driven from a sprocket 5 on a power shaft 6, this shaft being driven in any usual or desired manner. The bed plate is recessed on its under side, as indicated at 7, to receive driving rollers, indicated at 8, these rollers being carried by the chain 4: and acting to drive the bed plate.
In accordance with the invention means are provided for guiding the plate as it goes around the corners of the frame and reliev ing the mechanism from jar or shock as the movement of the bed plate changes, and two forms of guiding means for accomplishing this are shown, these forms being the preferred ones.
Referring first to Figs. 1 to 3, the frame at each cornerhas secured to it a guiding section 9, this section being secured at the outside edge of the frame in any suitable manner, as by screws 10. These sections are the same for each corner oi description of one will suliice for all. lhe section 9 is provided with a groove 11, having side walls 12, 13. This groove is curved, the radius of which is substantially the same as the radius of the chain sprockets 5, before referred to. The plate support is extended to form a ledge 14, and on the support un derneath this ledge is a cam roll 15, this cam roll 15 being secured by means of a stud 16, as shown in Fig. 8. With this construction as the bed moves in the direction of the th e frame, and
arrow in Fig. 1, the cam roll enters the cam groove 11 and rides around the walls of this groove as the direction of movement of the bed changes, as indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2. With this construction the rolls are out of the way of the chains or other driving mechanism of the press, and the bed plate is guided and firmly held as it turns the corner of the frame, with the result that shock and jar are eliminated and a quiet smooth action is obtained.
Referring now to Figs. and 5, the same result can be obtained with the construction there shown. In this construction there are provided for each corner of the machine cam pieces 17, these cam pieces extending from the corners rearwardly with respect to the travel of the bed any desired distance. These cam pieces have a curved end 18 which extends around the corners and at their other end are broken, as indicated at 19, to permit the passage of the roller as the bed changes its position, the position of the rolls relatively to these cam pieces being shown in Fig. 4. These cam pieces in this modification are in the form of L-shaped strips, shown in detail in Fig. 5, the vertical leg 20 of the L forming the bearing surface for the roll.
It will be observed that in the construction described there are no moving parts, such as pivoted rollers or spring members, such as heretofore have been used, and a strong, rigid structure is produced in which the wear of the parts is reduced to a minimum, and the devices may be easily embodied in the machine without changing the construction or arrangement thereof.
\Vhile the invention has been shown and described in its preferred form, it will be understood that various changes may be made in the specific construction and arrangement of the parts, and the invention is not to be limited to the detailed construction shown and described.
What I claim is:
1. In a plate printing machine, the combination with the frame and the bed, of guides located adjacent the corners of the frame and having curved guiding surfaces,
guides located adjacent the corners of the frame and having curved guiding surfaces, and rolls depending from the bed and engaging the surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame.
7 4. In a plate printing machine, the combination with the frame and the bed, of guides located adjacent the corners of the frame and having curved guiding surfaces, and members depending from the bed and engaging the surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame.
5. In a plate printing machine, the combination with the frame and the bed, of plates at the corners of the frame and formed with a curved guiding surface on their inner sides, and members secured to the frame and riding on the curved surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame.
6. In a plate printing machine, the combination with the frame and the bed, of plates at the corners of the frame and formed with a curved guiding surface on their inner sides, and rolls depending from the outer corner edges of the bed and riding on the curved surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame.
7. In a plate printing machine, the combination with the frame and the bed, of plates at the corners of the frame and formed with curved guiding surfaces, and
rolls depending from the outer corner edges of the bed and riding on the surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame 8. In a plate printing machine, the com- )ination with a frame and bed, of guides located adjacent the corners of the frame and having curved guiding surfaces, and members depending from but not extending below the under surface of the bed and engaging the guiding surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame.
9. In a plate printing machine, the combination with a frame and bed, of guides located adjacent the corners of the frame and having curved guiding surfaces, and rolls depending from but not extending below the under surface of the bed and engaging the guiding surfaces as the bed travels around the corners of the frame.
