VALVE LIFTER.
Application led April 12, 1921.' Serial'No. 460,620.
My invention relates to the art of valve removing devices or a valve lifter as commonly called.
More particularly my invention relates to devices for compressing the valve springs commonly found in internal combustion engines so that the holding means for said spring may be removed whereupon the valve may be extracted lor grinding or replacement or the valve seat ground.
A primary object ontl my invention is to provide a valve lifter having a relatively long vertical thrust so that even Without altering any adjustment means that may vbe provided thereon for the comparatively rare case, the device is at all times ready for service. l purpose providing such a device that will have but four principal members or arms and to so dispose the levers with their oscillating ulcrum points that the thrust of the depressing member will be rendered nearly vertical, so thatbinding of the parts will be elimina-ted, and the disposition of the levers and fulcrum points Will be such that small angular' movement of the handle is required to produce a thrust arm displacement of relatively large magnitude. Moreover, part ot' the time such devices must be adapted to be Aoperated by onev hand, as when removing or replacing the valve spring holding means, and obviously the `operating handle should be so connected to the other arms that it moves through a relatively small angle, so that the other hand is not interrupted in its application to removing the spring pin.
Again, the device must have means that will permit of its being securely locked when desired, so locked that it Will be prooi against jars incident to Working about the engine, and such locking means is preferably automatically removable so that the hand operating the handle is Wholly free of attending to such locking means. It is a primary object of my invention to provide such a. locking means and to provide means for adjusting the device for very large or very small valves.
Lastly, it is a primary object of my invention to provide such a valve removing device that is economical to manufacture, simplein operation and strong to withstand rough usage.
The above mentioned general objects of my invention, together with others inherent in the same, are attained by the ,mechanism illustrated in the iolloiving drawings, the
, same being merely a preferred exemplary form of embodiment of my invention, throughout which drawings lilre reference numerals indicate like parts:

A U-shaped arm 5 .is provided on one end with a foot 6, and on the other end near its end portion with a slot 7 in which is slidably mounted a thrust arm 8. Adjustably pivotally mounted the end pertion'ot said arm 5 is an L-sliaped f-ulcrum arm 9, to which arm .is pivotally mounted at its upper end an L-shaped handle arm 10, said handle arm 10 being pivoally connected near its right angle point 11 to the thrust arm 8. A latch member 12 is mounted upon the handle arm 1() in operative positionto 'en-V gage notches: 13 in the thrust arm 8. A spring 14 is preterably provided engaging said latch so that it may be automatically retracted when desired.
The mode oil operation oi my device is: the toot- 6 is pressed against the valve spring 15 and the thrust arm 8 is caused to be position'ed against the top of the `valve `16 by lifting the handle arm 10 to position shovvn in dotted line. Thereupon, the said handle arm 10 is depressed to the position snorvn, 1. e. With its loiver part 17 approaching the vertical position of the thrust arm 8. It is preferably stopped just short ot reaching the vertical so that the upwardly directed pressure on the thrust arm 8 serves to hold the latch 1Q in the notches 13. It it be desired to malte this device selfelocking, it is only necessary to shorten the thrust armV 8 between the pivot point of the handle arm 10 and the bevelled end of said thrust arm.
Particularly, be it noted that only one4 hand is necessary to operate the handle arm 10 so that the other is free to remove or insert the pin 18. Upon removing the device it is only necessary to depress slightly the arm 10 so that the spring 1dautomatically disengages thelatch 12 and thenby permitting the arm to rise towards the dotted line position, withdraws the thrust arm 8 in relation to the iioot 6.
Maniitestly, this arrangement of the L- shaped lever arms (particularly the length of part 17) provides for an unusually large vertical displacement and at the same time such displacement is accompanied with a minimum of rotation of the handle arm 10, rendering the operation of suoli arm 10, wholly within the power of one hand. The arm 9 is adjustably mounted by means ot the holes 19.
Obviously, changes may be made in the forms, dimensions, and arrangement oi' the parts of my invention, without departing from the principle thereof, the above setting forth only a preferred form of embodiment.
I claim:
l. A valve lifter embodying a U-shaped arm, a-slotted toot, on one end portion o1 said arm, a slot near the end portion on its other end, a thrust arm slidably mounted in said slot, said thrust arm being in alignment with said foot, an adjustable L-shaped ulcrum arm mounted in the end portion ot' said U-shaped arm, and an L-shaped handle arm pivotally mounted near its angle point to said thrust arm and pivotally connected at its end portion to the end of said tulcrum arm. f
2. A valve litter embodying a U-shaped arm, a slotted toot on one end portion of said arm, a slot near the end portion on its other end, a thrust arm slidably mounted in said slot, said thrust arm being in alignment With said foot, an adjustable L-shaped tulcrum arm mounted in the end portion ot' said U-shaped arm, an L-shaped handle arm pivotally mounted near its angle point to said thrust arm and pivotally connected at its end portion to the end .of said ulcrum arm, and a locking latch operatively mounted on said handle arm and disposed to en gage said thrust arm. n
3. A valve lifter embodying a U-shaped -arm, a slotted foot on one end portion ot said arm, a slot near the end portion on its other end, a thrust arm slidably mounted in said slot, said thrust arm being in alignment With said toot, an adjustable L-shaped fulcrum arm mounted in the end portion ot said U-shaped arm, an L-shaped handle arm pivotally mounted near its angle point to said thrust arm and pivotally connected at its end portion to the end of said i'ulcrum arm, a locking latch operatively mounted on said handle arm and disposed to engage said thrust arm, and a spring connected to said latch whereby said latch may be automatically retracted.

A valve lifter embodying` a U-shaped arm, formed by tixedly securingvtwo flat members together as respects their middle and one end portion; an adjustable slotted toot being disposed on one end portion of said arm; a slot near the end portion on its other end; a thrust arm slidably mounted in said slot, said thrust arm being in alignment with said toot; an adjustable L- shaped tulcrum arm mounted in the end portion ot' said Usshaped arm; and an L- shaped handle arm pivotally mounted near its angle point to said thrust arm and pivotally connected at its end portion to the end or" said ulcrum arm, whereby a small angular movement of said handle arm results in a relatively large displacement of said thrust arm.
5. In a valve lifter device, a thrust arm, a U-shaped arm on one end portion oi' which said thrust arm is operatively slidably mounted, an L-shaped handle pivotally connected to a pivotally mounted ulcrum arm, said pivotal connection ot said handle and said tuloruin arm being at the end thereof, said handle being pivotally mounted near its angle point to said thrust arm, and said ulcrum arm being pivotally mounted at one end portion to said U-shaped arm, and the other end pivotally mounted to said thrust arm.
