- TABLE.
Application filed July 2, 1925.A Serial No. 41,077.
This invention is for a table, and relates particularly to a construction especially adaptable for a smoking sta-nd, card table, serving table or the like, and in a less finished form it might well be used as a kitchen or laundry table.
The table is of a type having extensible leaves. VIt is proposed that in the preferrec embodiment of the invention, there be twosets of extensible leaves; one set which, when retracted, overlies the table top and forms a false top therefor, the other set be-L ing of the usual drop-leaf type.
The invention has for its principal object-s to provide an extension table of unique construction, especially adaptable and convenient for special' purposes, and which may be of neat and finished appearance in either its fully opened or fully closedposition, or in a partly opened condition. A further object of the invention is to provide a table w-hich may be extended in a simple and convenient manner to substantially four times its folded area. y The nature and construction of the table, as well as its objects and advantages, may be described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the table fully extended.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the table with the extension leaves fully retracted.
Fig. 3 is a partial plan view showing some of the leaves only in extended position.
Fig. 4 lis a view, partly in elevation and partly in section of the table, part ofits top being folded and part of its top being extended.
Fig. 5 is a detail view of the sliding pivot for the corner leaves.
In the drawings, 5 designates the table legs and supporting frame structure of a Suitable nature on which is a xed top 6, which isl preferably square or rectangular. Each corner of the top is cut out, as indicated at 7.
Normally covering and overlying the top 6 of the table are a plurality of extension leaves 8 of similar shape and. preferablyv of the saine thickness as the top 6 of the table. In the preferred form of the table, the top 6 is square and the leaves 8 are squares of one-fourth the area of the top. They fit together as shown in Fig. 2, to neatly and exactly cover the top 6. Each one of these sect-ions or leaves 8 has a sliding pivotal connection .at its outermost corner of the type shown in Fig. 5. A. pin 9 extending down from the corner of the section is slidably and rotatably received in a socketA 10 in the top of the leg 5 or other part of the supporting structure.
As thus arranged, each one of the sections 8 may be lifted from the position shown in Fig. 2 until it clears the remaining sections and then swung around to the position shown in Fig. Sand lowered until its corner is received in the cut-out corner recess 7 in the table top. At this time the extended section 8 is flush with the top of the table. It is held against rotation Aby the intertting corners of the section and the table' top, and is of course retained in position by the pin 9. Y
To retract the sections 8 to the normal position,'they are lifted, the sliding pins 9 permitting of such movement until they are sui'hciently high, and then swung back over the table top and lowered until they again rest on such top.
Secured along one or more, preferably all, of the sides of the table are extension leaves 1l of any usual o r preferred construction. I have shown these leaves as being of the hinged drop-leaf type, the hinges therefor being designated 12. Extension brackets,
such as pivoted blocks 18 under the table top, may be provided to hold the leaves 11 in extended position.
These leaves 1l are so arranged that when 'they are extended, they are flush with the top 6 of the table. They are of such length and width that they match-up evenly i with the sections 8 when these sections are extended, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. 4The edges of' the several leaves are preferably beveled, as shown, to add to the appearance of the table. At the saine time, the beveled ends of the leaves 11 extend under beveled edges of sections 8, as shown in Fig. 1, and give further support to said sections.
By suitably matching or contrasting the grain of the wood Vin the surfaces of the several parts, an extremely handsome and unique piece of furniture may be produced. It is especially suitable for a smoking stand, in thatrone or more of the corner sections 8 may be provided with ash receptacles, etc., as indicated lat A in Fig. 3. One or more of the corner sections can be independently swung out to suit the convenience of the user. A smoking stand as thus arranged may be very convenientljT used also as a card table by raising leaves "ll, thereby provia'ling;- a combined card table and enrol;- ing stand, with the ash receptacles convenientlv arranged.
lVhile especially adaptable vl'or a combined Smoking stand and card table, the invention in no manner restricted to auch use. It ie adaptable equally well to serving table-sj dining` tables, :sewing stand, tea-carts, kitch en or laundry tables and the like, as may be desired.
It will be Seen that with the arrangement shown the extended area oi the. table is subetantialljY tour tiinee its retracted area.
Various.; detail changes may, ot couree, be Inade in the conetriwtion, aliape, and arrangenient ot' parts within the spirit ot the invention as tj'pilied bj' the preterred einbodii'nent herein shown and described.
Vile claini as onr invention:
