Description

Feb' 22, 1927,
PILFERPRQQF Box Filed Deo. sl 1925 Patented Feb. 22, 1927.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN L. HOOD,OF BARRINGTON, RIODE ISLAND.
PILFERPROOF BOX.
Application led December 3, 1925. Serial No. 72,930.
n 10 sembled. l
F urther and other objects and advantages will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings l Figure 1 is a perspective View of one of the'box ends;
Figure 2 is a like view after securement of the metal strip about the marginal edges thereof;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary detail perspecive view of one of the side walls of the Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the assembled box; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged section on line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Y
In proceeding in accordane with the present invention the box ends 1 are formed into the desired shape and size. A thin metal strip 2 of integral or one piece construction is'then bent about the marginal edges kof the end and the ends of the strip are overlapped and secured to the box end by means of one .or more small brads or nails 3.
The boards 4 which are to constitute the top, bottom and side walls of the box are each formed with a kerf or sawcut 6 that extends across the end edges of the boards and into which is placed the thin metal strip 5, 40 as is clearly shown in Fig. 3. In assembling the various parts to form the box, the top, sides and bottom are placed in Vposition on lthe ends whereuponk the fasteners 7 are driven through the boards the metal strip 5 45 the metal strip 2 and into end walls or cleats forming the box ends 1 as shown in Fig. 5.
It is particularly to be noted that the fasteners are of spiral or screw formation, vthe head however being unslotted.
From the foregoing it will be seen that each nail passes through two strips, the lat-` ter being arranged one over the other and due to the spiral or 'screw formationiof the nails and ltheir being anchored by each strip, it is impossible to withdraw the nails without destroying the box.
The side, top and bottom walls may be formed of one or a plurality of boards, and each of the walls forming the side top or bottom has its own piece or strip of metal 5 embedded in its vendsedge, so that the walls can be easily and quickly assembled by mere securement of the boards to the ends, the latter being shipped with their strips 2 secured thereon.
Having 'thus described my invention, ywhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A box for knockdown shipment, composed of end walls, metal vstrips secured about the marginal edges of the ends, a top, a bottom and side walls each having metal strips embedded in their end edges and having the ends of the latter strips disposed flush with the side edges of the top, bottom and side Walls, said top, bottom and side walls being seated upon the metal strips of the end walls so as to dispose said first named metal strips in theiren'tirety between the end walls and the top, bottom and side walls, and fasteners extending through the top, bottom and side walls, and through each of the strips thereof and through the strips of the end walls whereby the latter strips form a common anchorage for the fasteners.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN L. HOOD.
