SWAGING MACHINE.
Application filed March 10, 1922. Serial No. 542,699.
This invention relates to the working of material or stock.
This invention has utility in swage forming of tubular stock, more particularly in the production of steering links for motor vehicles.
Referring to the drawings Fig. 1 is an embodiment of the invention in swaging apparatus for motor vehicle steering links;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a link as formed from tubular stock by the apparatus of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a side elevation, with parts broken away, showing the position of the parts as the link is nearing completion;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of one of the dies;
Fig. 5 is a section through portions of the apparatus of Fig. 1 showing the position of the parts as the stock or material is started for reforming;
Fig. 6 is a transverse section on different planes showing features of the dies and their mounting and contact; and
Fig. 7 is an end elevation of the holder and die actuating means, with parts broken away.
The swager or impact delivering portion of this apparatus isherein shown as provided with a base 1 carrying journal bearings 2, 3, in alignment for carrying a shaft 4 driven by a pulley 5 (Figs. 1, 3, 5). This shaft 4 on the opposite side ofthe bearing 3 from the pulley 5 has enlargement 6 having radially extending ways 7, herein shown as four in number in opposing pairs (Fig. 6). In the outer portion of each one of these radial ways ,7 is disposed an anvil 8 which may have along its outer edge or side a longitudinally extending raised portion or rib 9 as an impact receiver from rollers 10. These rollers 10 are in a continuous or endless series about this enlargement 6 of the shaft 4. The rollers 10 are confined by a cage having spacers 11 between the rollers 10. Said spacers 11 are integral with an end ring 12 and the rollers 10 are held in the cage by second end ring 13. A hardened holder ring 14 is about this endless series of rollers 10. This holder 14 is carried by a massive drum or collar 15 anchored by bolts 16 with the bearing 3.
Additional reinforcement is given this ring or collar 15 by outside band 17 shrunk thereon. a
Radially inward from each of the anvils 8 and disposed in the way 7, xis a wedge member 18 having its larger portion at the inward end and tapering outward therefrom away from the journal bearing 3.
Still further radially inward from the I wedge members 18 are dies 20 having outer wedge faces 21 supplementary to the wedge faces 19 of the wedges 18. Each of these dies 20 has on. its inner side a concave face 22 of a curvature having a diameter approximating the maximum exterior diameter of the article to be treated or swaged in reworking.
The shaft 4 is tubular. having axially therethrough a way 23. Entering this table lar way 23 of the shaft 4 remote fromthe die 20 is a threaded tubular member 24. Nut 24 is held by bolts 24" as to shaft 4. Rotation of the tube 24 as to this shaft 4 and the nut 24 is effected by a bar through terminal openings in the tube 24 and this tube 24 is thus adjusted axially. As this sleeve 24 is thus adjusted, lock nut wheel 25 may.
be brought to holding position. The tube 24 has inward from the nut lock wheel 25 a reduced portion 26 about which extends a helical spring 27 coacting for thrusting a second sleeve 28 axially along in the shaft 4 to have its reduced end 29 clear the wedge faces 19 of the wedges 18 and to engagethe several dies 20 in thrusting such dies away from the bearing 0 and against a ring 30. backed by door 31 swingable in door frame disk 31 carried by the drum 15. These dies are normally held in open or not 001- lapsed position by this spring 27.
Forwardly of this swager apparatus and mounted on the base 1 is a feeding device therefor, comprising a main base 32 having thereon a slide guide 33 carrying a shaft 34 provided with a hand wheel 35 and also a pinion 36 which latter is in mesh with rack 37 for reciprocation as controlled by said wheel 35. The length 38 of tubular stock that is to be reworked or swaged may pass through opening 39 in the door 31 and extend into the tube 28 in theshaft 4. As the next step in placing the material to be worked, its opposite end is clamped and held in rigid horizontal position in alignment with the shaft 4' by collapsible collet or chuck 42 having inwardly extending after chored by bolts 54 to base 1 of the swaging apparatus proper, thereby holding the 48, 50, in ali nment withtheshaft 4.
Shifting of three way air control valve 55 ermits supply of air to the cylinder 53 for t 1rusting the piston 52 away from the shaft 4 and thereby draws the collet or collapsible chuck device 42 into the tube 56 for forcing this collet or chucking device 42 into gripping relation with the article of work 38.
This sleeve or tube 56 has set screw anchored collar 57 thereon held by a ring 58 rods in position with the general 'guide frame 48' thereby providing a simple loose mounting assembly for this collet control sleeve 56. In order that the gripping of the collet may. not tend to wrench the sleeve 56, such sleeve is held by thrust bearin 56' and the sleeve is given a drag against ree rotation by cheeks 59 on shaft 59' drawn up as desired to a gripping or frictional holding of thesleeve 56 by operating the hand wheel 60. The work is now thrust through the door 31 into the sleeve 28 by operating the hand wheel 35 until index 61 on carriage 48 comes to index mark 61" on the guide 33.
The pulley 5 is usually in continuous op eration and the control has to do only with feedin therein the stock or material to be forme To begin the operation of the reforming or reworking of the material it is now only necessary for the operator to throw three way valve 62 to supply air to upper part of clinder 63 for drawing inward of piston rod 64." This yieldable pulling down of the rod 64 rocks angle lever 65 which i has slotted arm 66, engaging pin 67 {to shift such pin 67 along slot 68 in the door 31,
carrying sleeve 69 engaged by the pin 67 away from the feeding device and into the holder 15; The sleeve 69 is accordingly yieldably urged by the air power in the cylinder 63 against'the ends of the dies 20, thereby yieldably continuously urging and holding the dies 20 toward stock being reformed even duringthe vibration due to the swaging operation. This power air effects travel of the wedge or inclined faces 21 of the dies 20 along the bevel faces 19 of the wedges 18. This action causesthe tapered through which air relation as to the tubular member 24 in this shaft 4.
Adjustment of the tube 28 to shift this shoulder 73 may change the reduced size limit. When this working down of this ta per 72 is completed, should it be desired to form a greater length of the reduced portion 74, than the extent of the faces 22 of the dies 20, the hand wheel 35 may be operated to urge the work through the swaging apparatus t'o'the extent desired for the work terminus to abut stop 74. This stop 74 is adjusted in the sleeve 24 by set screw 74".
Then tapered portion 75 from the faces 22 of the dies 20 on the reverse tapered end portion of the dies 20 form the reverse end tapered portion 76 opposed to the tapered portion 72 in the formed article, leaving an enlarged end 77 corresponding to the end 71 as the size of the article before treatment with the intermediate portion of th article treated as shown in Fig. 2.
The feeding of the article. through the apparatus is effected by manual operation of the hand wheel 35. The air valve 62 was effective for urging collapsing of the dies may now be shifted to reverse position for releasing such dies. Next to the hand wheel 35 may be operated in reverse direction to withdraw the article from the swager, while shifting'of the valve 55 to reverse positionmay result in thrusting the piston 52 toward the guide 48 there by moving the collapsible chuck 42 outward and releasing the finished article and allowing it to drop away from the machine. The spring 27 effects reopening of the collapsed dies by outward thrust of the sleeve 28-at once the valve 62 is reversed. The high rotative speed of the shaft/4 causes the dies,
wedges and anvils to be thrown and held number of ways 7 accordingly simultaneously deliver impacts or blows along the rounded or projecting ribs 9 of the several anvils 8 in several radial inward directions.
shown, these impacts are not only With an equal number of ways, as herein simultaneous but directly opposite each other in intersecting pairs.
Lubricant cups 78 may provide lubricant to the various bearings. There is accordingly provided hereunder an apparatus for reforming an article intermediately of its length by giving it a reduced shape. This is a matter of economy, especially in the production of steering links for motor vehicle work, as at a single operation, the larger size of tube which is cheaper to manufacture, may be quickly given a reduoed intermediate extent with the larger funnel or cup shaped ends as seats for the end connections. It is accordingly an integral or one-piece article which is possible of rapid economical production in the machine herein disclosed as a single operation, which in practice, has easily run to average four links per minute.
