UNITED STATES PETER J. nrrnansnn', or nnrrnnon, OHIO.
PUMP.
Application filed August 29,1924. Serial No. 734,981.
This invention aims to provide an improvement in pumps especially designed for use in wells and adapted to produce the flow of a maximum amount 01": water in a practically continuous stream during the operation 01 the pump, the pump operating in such a novel and effective manner as to have a. high degree of elliciency.
A further object is to provide a pump of this character and having these advantages and wherein a single plunger operates in conjunction with an arrangement providing in effect two working chambers.
A further object is to provide a pump of the character specified which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and efiicient in operation and adapted to be manufactured in accordance with conventional practice and from materials and by means of facilities ordinarily available.
Other objects and advantages reside in certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully de- F scribed and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forminga part of this specification, and in which:
Figure l is a view partly in section and partly in elevation showing a well pump embodying the present invention, and
Figure 2 is an enlarged view partly in section and partly in elevation showing the details of the Valve plunger or traveling valve.
In the drawings, a well casing is designated at 5 and has a head 6 at its upper .end on which a pump pipe or flow line designated generally at 7 is supported. This pump. pipe or flow line 7 is made up of a number of tubular sections suitably coupled to each other. A tubular member 8 is -coupled to the lower end of the flow line 7 and provides a working chamber as will hereinalter appear. To the lower end of the tubular member 8 a working barrel 9 is connected and has a standing valve 10 in its lower end which provides a valve controlled inlet into, the lower end of the working barrel.
A valved plunger or travelling valve 11 is operatively fitted in the working barrel 9. This plunger 11 is shown to advantage in Figure 2 and the passage which extends therethrough is controlled by, a downwardly seating check valve 12. The upward movement of the valve 12 is limited'by means of stops 13 provided on a combined valve cage and coupling 14. A hollow plunger rod 15 has its lower end threaded into the combined valve cage. and coupling 14 and the opening oil this hollow plunger rod 15 communicates with the passage extending through the plunger 11 ata point abovethe valve 12 as shown. in the drawings. The pp r 6 1d 0 the hollow plunger rod .15 is connected with a sucker rod 16 as indicated at 17. The sucker rod 16 operates through a stuijling box 18 provided in a cap 18 fitted on the upper end of the p nup pipe or flowline 7 and this sucker rod may be reciprocated from a handle 19 having a pin and slot connection l9 -therewith or it may be reciprocated from a windmill. r r m any suitab ourc of power.
A p rtiti n 2.0 is nte posed b tw th lonier end of the pump pipe or flow line 7 ant and cent ally this partition 20 is provided with a stuliing b0); 21 through which the hollow plunger rod 15 is slidably fitted. In this manner direct communication between the working chamber and the pump pipe or flow line 7 is prevented.
A11 inlet pipe 22 omm nic t w th h upper end of the working chamber 8 bv means of elbow 23 Or other suitable ting and in the lower end of the'inlet pipe the upper end of the working chamber 8 22 a standing valve 24; is provided in order I i that a valve controlled inlet maybe had.
A check valve controlled port 25 is provided in that-portion of the hollow plunger rod 15 which works within the chamberfi and the working barrel 9.
An ottftake pipe 26 leads from adjacent the upper end of the pump pipe orflow line 7 to the storage tank or point of distribution and may have a valveddischarge spout 27 incorporated therein.
In operation when the plunger 11 moyes downwardly liquid is drawn into the working chamber 8 through the inlet pipe 22 and liquid that has been previously drawn into the working barrel below the plunger iseX- pelled .up through the plunger and through the. hollow plunger rod into the flow line 7 at this time and during this movement. On the upstroke of the plunger 11 liquid is drawn into the working barrel 9 below the Ill) rod 15. The partition 20 and the valves 12 and 25 prevent back flow ot the liquid from the flow line.
I claim:
