TRUNK.
Application'A filed October: 16,-:1923f11Se1ia1-Nof 668,862'.
This inventioirrelates towardrobe trunks and ygarment hangers therefor, though it? y1s noted that the invention is not limited to either- Wardrobe trunks ora` hangers'and insome respects not to-trunks.
One object ofI the invention is to provide a trunk `of-this-kindWitlrimprovedmeans vfor. holding the Ahan gers .inf place.
yAnotheroloject ot the .invent-ionis toprovide improved vmeans forholding thetray in place.
Other objectsof the .invention are to improve generally the simplicity and`- efficiency of. such devices andV to provide `devices ofy this'ikind Which are durable, economical- -to manufacture andioperate andnvhich will not get out of order.
Still other objects of thefinventionl will appear as the description proceeds;v andwhile herein details oi the invention are described, the inven'tionffis-.not-jlimiteolL to these since manyvand variouschanges may be made Without departing from the scope ot the invention as claimed.
`The inventivefeatures for the acc01nplishment ol these andother objectslare.shown herein in connection with an improved trunk which, briefly stated, comprises -a trunk body provided With a\ seatiiplate onthe 'floor of the trunk body provided with retaining holes and an upper plate onthe top Wall oi the trunk provided with elongated openings.
`The garment' hangers `are each -formed with afshank havingV a pin iadapted to en'- gage in sa1d holes ofthe seat plate. A
latch onthe upper` part of eachVl hanger; is
lockable in any one oi said:elongatedtopenings. A tray disposed in the trunk in 'front ot the hangers is lprovided .with suitable means to hold thetray fin place.
In i ythey accompanying drawing, showing by-way of? example, one4 of--manyrpossible embodiments ot the invention,
fFig.;1 is a i'ragmental'perspective/view showing the trunk open-with trayand hang ers therein;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation shovving -a hanger `with a` garment thereon;

Fig. 5`-1s atop plan showingthe 4seat plate;
`F 1g. 6 isla vertical sectional/view, vpartlythe front of the trunk hinged at the side,
edge thereof andprovided with hasps 13. Asheetvmetalv seat plate wis mountedon the floorof the trunk body and provided With a raised intrasmarginal part 16 (Fig. 5) having side guide ribs 17 and amid line series ofretaining holes larranged in a line perpendicular to the back Wall of the trunk. An npperiretaining plate v mounted on the top Wall 21 of the trunk is provided with adown' pressedmiddlepart 22 (Fig. 4) and side guide ribs 23 and a series ot'elongated openings 24- disposed betweensaid ribs. y
A plurality of garment hangers 25 (Fig. 2) ydisposed between said plates 15 and 20 are-eaclriiornnsdiwith a downwardly extending shank 26 adaptedfto rest on said seat plate 15 between said ribs 17. The curved garment supporting upperledge member'28 hasa itl-shaped cut-out 29 and is upwardly curved to for-m a large transverse opening 301 beneath said upper edge; above a horizontal carrying portion 31. Thelower end or' said shank 26H01? some of the hangers is provided With transverse' retaining arms 32A tener 34 carried on the member v28 and a strap '34 carried `on the portion 81.
A sheet; metal bracket 35 secured on and embracing thef lower ends of said shanks is provided with adownivardly pointed pin 36engageableiinany one of saidvholes 16.
A .housing plate ,38 having frontandrear members' 39 (Fig-Q6) f mounted on the front and rearitaces` offthe hanger in part eneloses `said cut-out-29 Vto form a suitable latch space ffor a `latch fra-me 4:0 provided with a transverse attaching member 41 and an upwardly projecting tongue 42 passing through a slot 43 in the upper yoke part 44 and engageable in any one of said elongated openings 24. A pin 45 passing through `the upper part ot the housing members 39 has secured thereto a spring 47 tensioned bctween said pin and the attaching member 4l, yieldably holds said tongue in the opeuing 24 and permits the tongue to be lowered and retracted from the opening 24 when the lower manipulating part 48 ot the vtrame is depressed by hand. A hanger hook 5t) pivoted on an outer end ot said pin 45 may be depressed when the hanger is in the trunk and be raised when the hanger is not in the trunk to hang the garment on a wall hook or the like.
A retaining rail mounted on the floor ot the trunk near and parallel to the trent edge thereot is engaged by a cleat 56 carried by a tray 57 disposable in the front et the trunk over said rail and against garments on the hangers and helps hold the garments trom disafrrangemeut. Said tray has partitions 59 and a pair oi lids GO provided with snap fasteners (il. Said cleat 56 engages behind said rail, holds the lower part ot the tray in place and act-s as a Jr'ulcrum when the upper part is being moved into place against the garments. A strap (i3 secured on the inner vtace ot the top wall ot the trunk is provided with a. lastener socket 64 at the end receiving a snap fastener knob (S5 mounted on one ot the tray lids to hold the tray in place.
The operation of the trunk and hangers is simple and obvious from the foregoing. Coats and the like are hung upon the edge 2S; skirts, upon the horizontal portion 31, and one piece garments, as shown in Fig. 2. The hangers with the garments thereon are placed in the back ot the trunk with the pin 36 in one ot the holes 18 depending upon the bulk ot the garment; and then the latch is depressed and the upper part o't the hanger is moved back to a corresponding position and the tongue 42 allowed to engage in one of the openings 24.
The lower part ot' the tray is neXt inserted, with the cleat 56 behind the rail 55, and then the upper part of the tray is moved back and secured with the fastener 64. 65. The trunk is then closed in the ordinary way.
