erster ALFRED MILLEMAN, or swissvenn; rEitNsrLvANIA.`
ATTACin-.rnivr ron eoiasinarioiv semanas.
Appueauon filed Decanter 14, 1925. 'serial no. 75,212.
My invention relates to an attachment for combination squares, .and the primary object thereof 'is to provide an attachment which is designed to be connected to -a combination square andadapted tor use as a surface gauge, height gauge, ffor scribing lines, leveling plane work, or 'tor any'other uses wherein it is :tound to be.applicable,
proceeds, the invention resides in the com-V` bination and arrangement ot parts and in the details of constructionhereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment ot' the invention hereinafter disclosed can be made Vwithin the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention. In the drawing wherein like numerals ot reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views Y Figure 1 is a side elevational view ot a combination square provided with an attachment in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged verticalv sectional view of the slide with associated parts.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse sectional view ot the slide on line ITL-HI, Figure 1.
Figure t is an enlarged horizontal view ot the supporting screw.
Figure 5 .is an enlarged plan view of the clamping collar.
Figures 6 and 7 are respectively side and r .end views of theslide liner member.
ably mounted on the blade 2. The latter eX-.
tends through the slot 4L. The slide 3 consists ci two half sections respectively indiadjustable and comparatively cated at 5 and 6, lwhich are permanently secured together by a plurality of rivets A7, duringrthe assembly vot the slide.-
rPhe slide section 5 is provided with' a centrally disposedaper-ture Shaving a countersunl inner end 9.A A supporting screw 1li is rotatably mounted in theaperture 8, 'and projects laterallyiirom the slide Section5.
'the screw lOhas avtap'ered/ head 11 which'` seats in the counter ,sunk innerl end 9 ot the aperture 8 and is flush withthe 'inner fare ot the slide `section 5'.y rPhe-screw 10 is positioned in the aperture Sbefore theslide and 6 are assembled in the man- ,y
sections o ner above stated.
The supporting screw 10 is provided with a transversely extending aperture 12 which is disposed adjacent to the inner end thereot. A scriber or needle13 is mounted in the aperture 12 and is t'rictionally slidable'therein. Clamping collars laand 15 are mounted on the supporting screw 10 and are posiioned on" respective sides of they needle 13. rlhe collars 14 and`15 are provided on their opposed faces with transversely extendingk rounded grooves 16 for augmenting their engagement with the needle 13. The collar 15 is `closely litted intermediate of the outer tace ofthe slide section 5'and of the needle 13, andthe collar 14 is disposed on the outer side ot the needle 13Y and is engaged by a knurled locking nut 1 7. Thenut 17 threadably engages the supporting screw 10 and its adjustment thereon Vsimultaneously secures the supporting screw 10 against rotation in the slide 3, and the needle 13 against longitudinal movement in the supporting screw aperture 12, whereby the needle may be readily locked in the required position.
The slide section 6 is Vprovided withk a centrally disposed threaded aperture 1S in which' a locking bolt 19 is threadably' engaged.V The bolt 19 is formed with a knurled head 20 to' facilitate its manipulation.l
A tlatliner member 21 is vdisposed in the slide slot L1 and is disposed intermediate of the 4inner side of the slide section 6 and of the scale blade 2. The ends 22 oi the liner member 21 are disposed at right angles and overlaps the respective end edges of the slide section 6 tor. preventing the longitudinal movementot the linermember 21 in the slide slot 4. y
The inner end of the locking bolt 19 en'- gages the liner member 21 when the former is set :tor lockingV the slide 'against movenient of the scale blade 2. Y* The provision of the liner ineinber 2l eliminates the objectionable Vfeature of a direct engagement of .Y the locking bolt 19 with tlie scale blade 2, Aas such engagement would tend Vto deace or inar the surface of the scale blade 2.
One endQ of the needle 13 'is formed Witha straight pointV intended for scribiiig` Y lines and the other end 24 thereof is also pointedA and disposed atriglit angles to adapt it lfor use asa height and surface gaugeY inthe usual nianner.
' A The use ofniy attachment in connection With a combination square Will provide an accurate readily adjustable device oi the kind set forth and serveas an adequate, in-V expensive substitute for surface gauges Vas Y j now ordinarily constructed.
" ,vided Witli a slotV for tliepassage of saidV 'yiWhat I claim iszv, Y The ,combination with comprising a rectangularly shaped slide pro# blade oneside Wall of said slide orn'ied with an interiorly counter sunk aperture and the `other side -ivalltliereoi' formed with Y a combination Vsquare including "a blade, of an attachment a ythreaded aperture, a( supportingscrew provided with a tapering head, rotatably 4 screw and disposed Onrespective sides of said needle element, a nut thread'abhA niounted on said supporting soresv and engaging one of said pair of collarsffor locking said supporting screw against rotation in said counter' suiilaperture and for locking saidV needle element againstlongitudinal Inove-v nieiit in Vsaid transverse 'aperture7 a liner ineinber inounted'in saidslot',v the end portfon's of said liner nien'iber overlapping the respective end' edoes of one of said side Walls7 a locking boit threadably. mounted in said threaded aperture, and engaging said` `lner ineinber orlo'cking said slide against niovenent on said blade, substantially as described and-forthe purpose setorth.-
In testimony whereof I aiiX lmy signature.
