Vrlhe invention relates to work spacing mechanism `for 4buttonhole sewing machines and moreparticularly to mechanism for automatically spacing Athe work in machines adapted .for sewing a `series of buttonholes in shoe flies.
In buttonhole sewing machines ,provided with means for automatically spacing pieces of work, such as shoe flies, the work is moved Vbetween successive but-tonlioles a distance dependent upon the adjustment or `setting of 7the-spacing mechanism so that an equal spacing of the ,buttonholes is secured and the last vbuttonhole of the series is a definite distance fronithe first lbuttonhole with yany given setting of the spacing mechanism. lt follows, therefore, that with a given setting of the spacing mechanism the .variations in the length of iiies, which ,invariably occurs with the present methods of .manufacturing shoes, will -result in theloca- Vtion of thelast ortop buttonholes at varying distances from .the tops of -the Hies. This is objectionable since itis important, particularly in the better classes of work, that the upper buttonholes ,be definitely located atV Vmechanism i'equisitcf0r locating the last buttonhole of `the series to be sewed at a pre-determiined point on vthe piece -of `work to be operated on. XVhile the invention relates ,primarily `to buttonhole sewing Ymachines as above indicated cert-ain features are ,of more general application :and may .be ,embodied with advantage in other machines and mechanisms requiring similar or analogous adjustments or settings.

The Work carrier is provided with a curved edge gage 18 against which'the edge of the shoe fly is positioned bythe operator and is also provided with an open slot 20, which registers with the buttonhole zone of the iiy.V Thewvorl carrier is guided during its Work spacing movements Yby fixed rolls 22 and 24 arranged to engage the guiding .slots 26 and 27 formed on the carrier. The slots are so shapedV and the rolls so arranged that the fly is `l'ed by thef carrier in a path corresponding tothe curvature lof the edgeV guide 18 to properly locate the series of buttonholes with relation to the edge of the fly. The mechanism for advancing the Work carrier to space the buttonholes comprises a rack 28 provided with an arm 30 lwhich is connected by a pivot 82 with a block 84 arranged to slide Within a slot 3G in the carrier. The rack is engaged by a gear 38, which is driven from a Worm Wheel of equal diameter through connections which are operated upon by a cam 40 to Vvary the movement imparted to the gear in Vaccordance With the path of movement of the Work carrier so that the requisite movements V*are given tothe carrier to equally space the buttonholes along the irregular curved edge of thefwork. The connections also include a coupling clutchV which may be engaged or vdisengaged by a clamping nut 42 to permit carrier into position to properly locate the iirst buttonhole in the series to be sevved.l The Worm Wheel is engaged' by a Worm 44 which may be turned Y through a full revolution, orlthrough varying fractions of a revolutiomby an adjusti able mechanism connecting the Worin With a rspacingv shaft'` 46. The distance f through which the worm 44 is turned by a revolution of the spacing shaft 46 is determined by the adjustment or setting of' an arm 48, thc free end of Which carries a pin adapted to be enf gaged with any one of a series yot holes in the index plate 52;
In operating this machine the operator places the fly which may or may not haveV Y' been att'ached'to the upper on .the carrier in such position that-its edge lits the edge gage 18 and then operates the nut 42 to disconnect the gear 38 from the underlying worm Wheel so that the carrier may be moved with relation to the spacing mechanism to bring the lowerend of the fly into suchVV position with relation to the serving mechanism that the lower bntt-onhole will he properly located in thelly. The nut 42 is then operc ated to reconnect'the Agear', and therefore the carrier with the kWorniivheel andthe connected spacing mechanism, preparatory to starting the Ymachine to automatically sew and space a number or" buttonholes dei y termined by thewsetting of the mechanism which controls the .stopping of the machine.
In embodying the preferred form of the invention in this machine the location of the' end buttonhole of the series With proper relation to the top edge of the fiy is insured by the provision of a gage adaptedto be brought int-o register With the point on the flyV at which the last buttonhole of the series should be located and indicatingupon a cooperating scale the adjustment of the spacing mechanism requisite 'for locating the last buttonhele at this point in the fly. lVith this mechanism applied to the machine the stitch-forming lmechanism forms in effect a fixed gage Which is brought into register with the point on the upper at which the iirst butto'nhole of' the series is to be located, andthe gage above referred to forms a gage which is brought into register With the point at which the last buttonhole of the series is Y up into a substantially horizontal position` by a spring 58. The slide is mounted for movement on a guide bar arranged above and corresponding in curvature to the edge gage 8 on the Werk carrier.

The scale is provided with graduations corresponding to the holes in the index plate 52 and similarly marked, the holes in the index plate and the divisions on the scale being numbered O to 24 in the construction shown.
