TELEPHONE.
Application inea February 2s, 1924;'seria11v0. 695,290; aadin Australia yAugust 2s, 1923. p.
This invention relates to telephones of the automaticY type and it provides efficient and reliable means whereby the correct chargeable number of calls made by a telephone subscriber is accurately and positively recorded and indicated in order that said subscriber may have afpersonal check'cn the calls made by him. Theconstruction and use of the invention will bei explained with the aidof theattached drawings show.- ing same in its idle position. In said drawings Fig. 1 is a sectional perspective view taken from the right hand rear corner of a telephone box-in said view the counter Wheels and related members are removed for sake of clearness. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of Fig. l Vshowing said counter wheels in position. Fig. Sis a perspective view of said wheels `as carried on the swinging yoke. Inthese three views the invention sdrawn to anv enlarged scale. Fig. t is yaA broken front view. of'the door of the telephonebox with its thereon carried' members.
vReferring to said drawings the device as a unit Ais fitted on a. base lplate a whereby it is enabled to be neatly housedV within the telephone box al, Y fEngagea'bl'e with the telephone switch hook l) is a downwardly extending and rectangular shaped lever b1 having an upward return portion Z22-said lever being guid-` ablyheldl by slots and pins bfi within the .double cheeked frame b4. The horizontal portion b5 of said lever b1 is forinedat an oblique angle to engage with a terminal ,block c formed on a horizontal slidable bar 01 andwhen the switchhook is depressed bythe weight ofthe telephone: receiver a Y projecting linger 'c2 Yof .the saidv slide bar V4c1 makespushing Contact against a pawlcZ pivotally carried on the outside of the frame Z- -said pawl' being adapted to lhave locking. engagement lwith a'notchv 1 on the underside of the plunger coto hold andy retain l saidV plunger Ae in its inwardv position.
yOn said plungery c ispivotallycarried a fengageable with a lug f1' onfthe horizontal slidable bar c1 andby the". forward movement of latter bar, said pawl, f is brought into position to; lock a detent' g pivotally mounted as shown across the face of,V a swinging yoke g1 mounted between the cheeks of the frame bi1 on a spindle'j held by saidgcheelrs.
.'On the existing rotatable` dial hl of the telephone is formed an inwardly projecting locking said detent. On the spindle 'j are rotatably mounted a number of separate counter wheelsl as'j1 jz andl js each having ten teeth-saidA wheels beingv positioned in sequence` to respectively A denotey values ofV unitsV tens hundreds7 and sof onl in numerical succession.- Each wheel isfmadc with a gap [c for the. purposes hereafter mentioned, and each wheelv is'also fitted-with a "spring `controlled retention pawl l and with a springcontrolled driving pawlaslf,l2 7c3 ict-said driving pawls being integrally formed'in a group andasaunit pivotally carried on the swinging yoke g1 the latter 4bleing freely movable onthe throughspindle y'. These driving pawls are of steppedi for;- mation asA shown in ordert'o operate the counter' wheels in usual manner..
its full rotation its drivingV pawl as zdrops into the gap 7c therefor provided thus allowing' the next succeeding neighbor pawl 7c3 to come into kdriving engagement with vthe next `or"tens wheel l succession. l
y The plunger e when' inwardly'pushed closes the transmitter circuit Vm thus allowing the vtelephone to be 'operative in orvmovement of the dial tfowing vto the pawl Y. so As soon as the"units wheel'y'1 has made jz and so on in numerical Y vvdinary manner; This plunger e `i's pushed y detent g thus rendering the linger t'lfon the 'dial L iii-operative.V
To work the invention the receiver isremoved from its switch. hook Zi thusfreeing the therewith engageable lever blfrom contact with the terminal block c of the slidable bar-c1: which action through the agency of the finger@2 allows the pawl of..r the .plung- 'v er e to be ready 'to function. The forward movement of theslidable bar c1 by its lug f1 is disengaged from contact with the pawl y thus allowing latter to lock the detent g across 4the-aceof the yoke g1.
The dial as the primary motive member thefcaller by finger action inwardly pushes `which have been made.
the plunger e causing it to close the transmitter circuit m and be locked in such position bythe pawl CZ engageable with the notch d1 of the said plunger; consequently allowing the transmitter circuit fm to become operative and by such movement causing the call to be registered on and by the counter wheels as jl 7'2 and jg. j y
`The detent g ofthe plunger as previously shown has been advanced across the face Vor the yoke g1 by the initial movement of' the telephone dial and the'said detent now moving with thev plunger e ythereby causes the yoke g1, and thereon drivingpawls 7a2 7c3 7o* to radially move on the spindle which movement causes that driving pawl which is in engagement with a counter wheel (or if more than one driving pawl is in engagement with its wheel) Yto make one-tenth of a revolution and consequently indicate the call made or the aggregate number or' calls Upon replacing the receiver on its hook the plunger e with lits, members by urging springs is released to the idle position ready for the next call either to be made or answered. y
The' call or aggregate number of calls are recorded and readable on the counter wheels through a window 29 therefor provided in the door p1 of the telephone (see Figs. l, 2 and 4). vThe yoke g1 is returned to the idle position by spring r suitably anchored to said yoke and to the frame.
In using this invention a subscriber who is-called cannot transmit until he has pushed the plunger e into its circuitclosing position as m1 as the dial h notV having been moved the detent gV remains idleand this last mentioned movement of the plunger does not record a call.
lWhat we claim as our invention and de- Ysire to claim by Letters Patent is 1 1.
