RECOOLING DEVICE FOR CONDENSING LOCOMOTIVES.
Application filed June 1, 1923, Serial No. 642,827, and in Germany June 28, 1922. i
This invention relates to re-cooling devices for condensing locomotives oi' the kind which are arranged on a trail car, and it resides, more particularly, in that the re-cooling device comprises at both sides of the trail car rows of walls inclined at an acute angle with relation to the direction of running and leaving between them atree space which is in communication with a blower.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of one embodiment of the subject matter of the invention, partly in a. vertical longitudinal section;
Fig. 2 is a plan view corresponding to Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line of Fig. 1;
Fig. at is-a section on the line et-at oi: Fig. 1, seen from the left;
Fig. 5 is an elevation, similar to Fig. 1, of another embodiment of the subject matter of the invention, and h Fig. 6 is a plan view Fig. 1
Referring now to the drawings, the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 1 to i will be described first. The undertrame A of the trail car A carries a water tank'A Mounted on the perforated sheet metal top a of the water tank A vertically with relation'to the plane of thissheet metal are two rows of parallel walls B which are inclined at an angle of about 30 to degrees with relation to the direction of runnin The walls B donot extend as far as the vertical longitudinal middle plane of the trail car, so that'the two corresponding to rows of walls leave between each other a free space C extending in the direction of the last-mentioned plane. The walls B con-V sis't either of smooth sheet metal, corrugated sheet metal, wire sieves or narrow meshed expanded metal. The space C is closed at its front end by a transverse wall a of the trail car, it gradually enlarges rearwardly and is at its rear end in communication with the suction pipe of a mechanically driven blower D. The casing of the blow-er is provided with a pipe d which projects into an enlarged portion a of the water tank A The water to be cooled is fed to the re-cooler by a pipe E which forks into two pipes e and'e above the transverse wall a The pipes a and e are provided in the ordinary manner with fine openings from which the Water to be cooled flows between and over the walls B. The connection of the tank A with the condenser which is arranged on the locomotive, is established by a pipe line not shown in the drawings.
When the locomotive is running, the air streaming along the trail car A will pass through between the walls B into the space G and will be drawn off from the latteryby the blower D. .A strong air draught is thus produced between the walls B, which draught will quickly cool the water trickling down the walls B. In the blower D the waterdrops' carried along by the cooling air will be thrown against the wall of the blower casing by the action of the centrifugal force and caused to flowvthrough the pipe (Z into the tank A As the space C enlarges gradually towards .the blower D a. sufficiently large cross-section is produced for the outlet of the air enteringbetween the cooling walls B. V
\Vith the embodiment represented in Figs. 5 and ('3, the cooling walls are replaced by 'flat zig-zag tubes F which are parallel with relation to one another and through which flows the cooling water of the condenser or, in special cases, the steam to be condensed. When the locomotive is under extraordinary loads, the cooling action of the air streaming past the tubes F may, in thisinstauce, be increased by cooling Water which is 'caused to trickle downover the zigzag tubes ing a liquid to be cooled to said elements whereby the liquid passes along said elements in heat exchanging relation with the incoming air.
