It is also an object of this invention to provide an improvedV car 'roof in which the roof sheets are intervloold to form substantially'tubular *seams andare held in interlocking position by key members inserted lin 'the seams', the key'membersv serving also tol holdthe roof sheets inv terlo'cked with the oarlines in the oaseof an all-metal roof. It is-.a'lso van object of this invention to'provide a means for closing the tubular seams-.formed byf the roof sheets which holds .the key members therein Vand which serves Vas 'aV means for securing' the roof sheetstoV the side plates.
Intheall-metal roof shown in'Figs. 1. to 6, inclusive, Z-shape lcar-lines 1 extend betweenZ-'shape side plates 2 and-'have Vtheir welosv placed vertically and their top flanges the carlines.
- Application fired "september 16, 1925; seriafina. '5ans-I yondthegflanges andb-ent laterally to engage theupwardly projecting flanges '6 of the side plates andare secured thereto/by rivets 8.v i
In the alternate spaces .between'the Carli-nes -1 are, placed thereof sheets 1'0 -whichfhave' their edges or margins retrovertedfor formed with 'return' bends, the verticali-Kportions; 12 f 'of which engage with the webs 3 of the'carV lines while the horizontal portions14 engage beneath :the inwardly vdirected Vflanges 4 'of' vRoof sheets 16 1 which are placed Vin the remaining spaces between the carlinejsyhave their edges-or marginsA bent upwardly'providing vertical portions 18,'.the'n outwardly providing horizontalp'ortions 20 and downwardly providingvertioal portions 22 the `vertical portions 22 being provided atftheir lower edges with inwardly turned or retroverted, langeportions 24.- The v,plates 16 are placed so that-the' portions 18fand 2O of the sheets engage with'the webs 3 and top flanges 4 of thecarlines :while'the portions 22 project, downwardlyf'beyond the edges of Vthe inwardly turned portions 14 of the plates 1 0..` Thus the upper `carline flanges 4 are engaged andi'nterlocked in fthe seam between Y theroof sheets f1() an`d'16.- The vertical 'portions 2 2 are lof sufh'cient length 'to bring :thel inwardly turned flanges 24 inA engagement withv thesheets 10 so that kthe bentportions.
form hollow substantiallytubular seams eX- tending along the carlines from-.iside'rplat'e to rside plate. v
In the tubularfseam's formed bythe roof sheetsV there are inserted invertedy ohanne`l-V shape key members 26 havingwebs 28 andr Y edges.
