W. F. SPEAKMAN ET AL sECTIoNAL DERRICK LEG CLAMP Filed yJuly 14, 192e v invento-KS- GJ?. Civkett' n By kx @peni/wmv, v

.Application .fuea- July 14,
zThis l'invention relates Egenerally? to v:ivell i,.derri'cksandfhas more particular reference =to clamp 'fori the: sectional legs of the der-v rick, the primary object'of: the invention re- I5, siding in the .provision of wsuch a Y clamp wherein :the adjacent endsv of the .leg sections :areg'positivelyinterconnected l yFrequently the dropping ofheavy tools =from;.the 'topfof-a-tallv derrick causes a re- 1-0f:bound,of thefderrick-which sometimes jumps `tlu'eleg sections .f out of thexgenerallyusedV clamps causing the -derrick to collapse.
find stormsoften sway derricks` and spring them 1n such a manner as to cause the `leg ;,sect1ons. tobe draw'nfoutof the clamps and the entire derrick to collapse. Through the medium of the present type of clamp, these ,hazards` arel eliminated .and :consequently a safety ,derri'ck constructiongis provided. j
An additional object ofthe invention is 'to provide a clamp that is of such a nature as to permit the rapid construction or knock- ,ing down of the derrick.
Other objects will become apparent as the Vnature of the invention will be better under stood, the same comprising the novel form, combination, and arrangement of parts here-v inafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. n
In the ldrawing wherein v like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several Views:
Figure l is a fragmentaryelevation of a well derrick, the leg sections thereof being interconnected by reason of a clamp constructed in accordance with the present 1nvention. Y
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view of a pair' of derrick leg sections arranged in end to end relation, said ends being so constructed as to permit the use of the clamp ofthe present type.
Figure 3 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section taken Ysubstantially upon vthe line 3-3 of Figure 1 and looking downwardly in the direction of the arrows for disclosing the present4 clamp in upper end elevation.
Figure et is an enlarged detail section taken substantially upon the line 4-41 of Figure l fordisclosing the clamp in cross section, and Y Figure 5 is a perspective of a. sectional shim, a air of which are employed as ele.- inentso the present invention.
As is well known, the legs of metallic der- 192st seriale-N0.; 122.400.

andthis-by;reason offa largevariety of f clampsnow 1n use. In they drawing the pair ofleg sections disclosed gare designatedandin accordance with my invention, the ends of theseV sections are circumferentiallv flangedpas at 6.4.6. The clamp2 perse constitutes the-provision ofa pa-ir of tubularfine`- ltallic shi-ms 7-"7, each oftwhichis of half section formation pas.I disclosed fin- Figure 5,
saidgshims; bei-ng; arranged: overthe. vtubular leg sections 5-.+5 L directly within, theE )flanges in Figure l. At enefedgeofveaehofftheshim same is. formed-withf-an ,outwardly extending rlateral ear-8 formedwithan opening 9,these ears being, preferably. formed by cuttingzthe material in a horizontal-manner and a predetermined distance towards the center of each section andk then bending thesame outward ly, whichis of course an obvious expedient.
' The clamp further consists of` a metallic tube l0 formed throughout its length with 6 Y thereof` asV illustrated by the-dotted linesy .sectionslandfattheqouter .end Vthereof the y an opening substantially equivalent to one fourth of the circumference thereof soas to permit the disposition of the tube over the shims 7-7 upon the sections of the derrick leg, after which an insert ll is arranged within the opening.
The vertical edges as the insert ll are formed Vwith lateral flanges 10 and 11 respectively, to facilitate their rigid connection by reason of bolts and nuts asclearly disclosed in Figures l, 3 and` said flanges being provided with'piearranged openings for this purpose. Theears 8V of the shim sections will be disposed between these flanges and be secured thereto'by the bolt and nut connections at the opposite ends of the clamps as disclosed in Figure 3 and by the dotted lines in Figure l. Further, the braceV and vstrut rods of the derrick construction vwill be arranged atvv their ends between the flanges'of the `tube lO and insert v 1l also tobe secured thereto by reason of said bolt and nuty connection.-
It will thus be seen that the leg sections 5;:5 will be positively interconnected and thusy prevented'from any longitudinal or latof the tube 10 as well v eral movement with respect to each otherfor overcoming the great disadvantages of a derrick constructionas heretofore mentioned. A Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Y l. In a clamp for sectional derrick legs wherein the ends of the sections are provided with circumferential flanges, shims disposed around the ends of the sections digrectly in back of said flanges, a tube arranged over said shims and means for positively interconnecting said tube and said shims.
2. In a clamp for sectional derrick legs wherein the ends thereof are providedwvith lateral abutments, shims mounted upon the ends of the sections directly in back ot said abutments, a tube arranged over the shims and means positively connecting the tube to said shims. Y
3. In a clamp for sectional derrick legs wherein the ends'of the sections are provided'` with lateral abutment-s, shnns disposed upon the ends vof the sections in back ot said abutments, a tube arranged over the shims and complementary lconstruction between the shims and tube whereby the same maybe positively interconnected. y
Ll. In a clamp for sectional deirick legs wherein `the ends of the sections are provided with lateral abutments, sectional metallic shims arranged over the ends of the leg connections between the shims and the sections of the tube;
6. Inra clamp for sectional derrick legs wherein the ends of the sections are provided with lateral abutments7 sectional'shims disposed around. the lends of the sections Vdirectly in back of the abutments, a sectional tube arranged over the pair ot' shims, and means formed integral with the shim Vsections, and tube sections whereby'saidV shim Vand tubersections may be positively `interconnected. i
e In testimony whereof we affix our signatures. Y l
