Description
DNI'IED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JAMES MGOARTER, 0E FRANKFORT, INDIANA.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 16] .696, dated April 6, 1875; application filed February 20, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAnEs MOOARTER, of Frankfort, Clinton county, Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in \Vagon-Tongue' Supports, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 represents a top view and Fig. 2 is a side view, partly in section, on the line 0 0, of my improved Wagon-tongue support.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved springsupport for Wagon-tongues, by which the jerky action of the tongue and the strain on the horses arising therefrom on the passage of the vehicle over rough and uneven ground may be to considerable extent avoided. The invention consists of a U shaped piece of springwire, which carries, at the front part, a tonguesupporting pulley, being bent spirally around side pulleys of the pivot bolt, connecting tongue and hounds, and applied with the rear ends equidistant from the king-bolt to the front axle.
A represents the U-shaped spring-support, of steel wire, of suitable thickness, which is designed to be used as a tongue-supporting attachment for road-wagons and other heavy draft-vehicles. The front part of the support A is placed under the tongue, and provided with a pulley, B, for preventing the wearing of the tongue as it is raised or depressed by the jerks caused by the unevenness of the ground. The sides of spring-support B pass, by spirally-bent parts, over pulleys or rollers O, which are placed on the pivot-bolt of the tongue and hounds at the outside of the hounds. The rear ends of support A are curved to fit the front axle, and placed to bear thereon at equal distance from the kingbolt. The spring power of the support is transmitted from the axle. and tongue-bolt to the under side of the tongue, so as to be instrumental in relieving the horses from the violent strains of the tongue when passing over rough roads.
I do not claim as new and of my invention the method of supporting the pivoted tongues of vehicles by means of a spring connected with the hounds on the front axle thereof; but
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A support for wagon-tongues, consisting of a tongue bearing front pulley, in combination with a spring attached thereto, bent spirally around side pulleys of the tongue-pivot, and having its rear ends fitted to the front axle, substantially asand for the purpose set forth.
JAMES MOOARTEB.
