LINE TRIP R Application filed September:
The invention has for its object to pro vide a-sin ple and efficient line trip or slug guide attachment for type-setting machines whereby'the type lines or slugs will be effectively held against tipping'when ejected from the trimming knives and thereby caused to properly fall by gravity along the guide channel to the galleywvithout 1 The invention further seeks to provide a do- I vice of the type stated that is so constructed that it maybe readily attached to standard that will hereinafter appear the invention "further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts,-all of which will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in v the appended claims, reference being had ing'the application of the invention.

ejector, through the medium of which the In the drawing, in which likenumerals indicate like. parts in all of the figures, 1
indicates the slug guide bracket of a typesetting machine, and 2 a portion of the slug slugs are forced, through :the knives (not shown) into theguide ortrou'gh-way of the bracket 1 to. properly slide downontolthe galley 3. Aportion of the machine framing. is indicated at land servesas a neansfor supporting the device which forms the sub-. ject matter of this invention. Theparts thus'far described are commonly used in v the now standardtype-setting machines and their construction and operation'is well understood by those skilled in the art.
In carrying out my invention I provide a dovetailguide bar 5 which is secured to. the framing portion 4 in vertical position adjacent to and parallel with the troughway of the bracket- 1 by a single securing screw 6 which passes through a countersunk soon appear. I r c v A slide block 8 provided with a dovetail" guide groove 9 adaptedl'o slidably receive thev bar 5 .is--mounted upon that bar and RICHMOND, VIRGINIA, AssIGNoR or ONE-HALF Domains 3?.

aperture in the said bar-and enters a suit able tapped aperture in the said fran'iing portion. The. securing screw 6 and the tapped aperture therefor in the framing portion 4 may be specially provided where neces sary but in inostistandard typesetting machines such aprovision will be unnecessary as itv will only be necessary-to utilize one of the screws and tappedapertui'cs already provided in that framing port-ion.
I The barf) has its front face providedwith a plurality of closely equi-distan-tly' spaced face depressions 7 the purpose for which will bored as at 10' to'receive a ball bearing 11 and a suitable spring12 positioned for yieldably forcingthe ball into certain ones of the depressions 7 As before stated, the block 8 is slidably mounted upon the bar 5 and by reason of providing the, depressions 7 and spring pressed ball 11 the block may be freely movedto any position. throughout thev lengthof the bar 5 and suitably held to any adjusted position by the yieldable coaction of the [ball 11 and the selected depression 7.
V An angled member 13 has one arm thereof removably screw-secured, as at 14;, to the side of the block 8adjacent the guide bracket-'1, and the other arm thereof projects across the frontedges of the guide bracket 1 in position for being engaged by the upper end of-any of the slugs ejected into the bracket guideway that may tend to tipnforwardly and. thus be transposed in transit to the galthereof presented toward the ejected slugs faced with a-wear or abutment plate 15 of leatheror any other suitable shock absorbing material such as will accomplish its slug edgeengaging' function without danger of defacement.- .The plate 15 is preferably cemented to the arm of the angle ncinber'so that no metallic connecting inediumslwill be.
presented to the edge of the ejected slugs.
By.v providing a structure, as before described, means is provided for engaging the upper end of slugs as they are ejected into the guide bracket guidewayyto prevent all 'ley. The arm last mentionedhas that face tendency of tipping forwardly and becom- 1 ing transposed in transit to the galley, the
slug engagement being such that the antitipping action is positive but 7 is accomplished in such manner that all danger of adjustment by vibration or shock. The engagement of the ball 11 in the selected de-- pression is suchthat while the action is yieldable the block 8 will be so held to its. adjusted position that there is no danger of the same being thrown out of adjustment by the ordinary vibration and shock incident to the operation of the type-setting ma chine uponwhich a device is mounted.
' From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing,
it is thought that the novel details of 0011- struction, the manner of operation and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which it relates; 1 What I claim is: V
1. A device 'of the class describedcomprising a guide adapted to be secured'upon a typesetting machine adjacent the slugguide bracket thereof and having depressions in one face thereof, a block slidable along the guide and having aspring pressed member for engaging certain of the guide face'depressions to hold the block at adjusted positions, and a member carried by the block in position for extending across the slug-guide bracket to prevent tipping of slugs ejected into the bracket.
2. A device of the class described comprising a guide adapted to be securedupon a type-setting machine adjacent the slug guide bracket thereof, and having depressions in one face thereof, a block slidable along the guide and having a spring pressed member for engaging certain of the guide face depressions to hold the block at adjusted positions, a member carried by the block in position for extending across the slug-guide bracket to prevent tipping of slugs ejected into the bracket, said member havinga shock absorbing facing for encoun tering the ejected slugs.
A device of the class described comprising a guide adapted to be secured upon a type-setting machine adjacent the slugguide bracket thereof and having depressions in one face thereof, a block slidable along the guide and having a spring pressed member for engaging certain of the guide face depressions to hold the block at adjusted positions, and an angle member having one arm removably secured to the blockand the other arm extending across the slug guide bracket and having a shock absorbing facing cemented thereto in position for engaging slugs ejected into the bracket to prevent tipping or defacement thereof.
4. A device of the class described com prising a dovetail guide adapted to be secured by a single screw to the framing of a type-setting .machine adjacentthe slugguide bracket thereof and having depressions in one face thereof substantially throughout its length, a block slidable upon the dovetail guide and having a dovetail groove to fit said guide and a, bore merging with the said groove, a ball in the said bore and a spring for forcing the same into engagement with the depression-provided guide face to provide for yieldable'adjustments of the block along the said guide, and member carried by the block inposition for extending across the slug-guide bracket to prevent tipping of slugs ejected into the bracket.
5. A device of theclass described comprising a dovetail guide adapted to be secured by a single screw to the framing of a type-setting machine adjacent the slugguide bracket thereof and having depressions in one face thereof substantially throughout its length, a block slidable upon the dovetail guide and'having a dovetail groove to fitsaid guide and a bore merging with the said groove, a ball in the said bore and a spring for' forcing thesame into engagement with the depression-provided guide face to provide-for yieldable adjust-' ments of the block along the said guide, and an angle member having one arm removably secured to the block and the other arm eX- tending across the slug-guide bracket and guide member, a yicldable pressing member carried by the block and operating to hold said block in' its adjusted positions along said guide member, and a member carried by said block in position for extending across the slug-guide bracket to prevent tipping of slugs ejected into the bracket.
