TRUNK.
Application filed January 1.4, 1926. seria no. 81,207.
My invention'relates to trunks and an ob-' ject is to provide a water-tight and dusttight trunk particularly adapted for carrying on automobiles. My invention includes spectial means for making water-tight and dust-tight, all of the joints between the body portion of the trunk and a cover hinged thereto so that the contents of the trunk will be fully protected while the trunk is being carried.
The full objects and advantages of my invention will appear in connection with the detailed description thereof and the novel features embodied in my inventive idea will be particularly pointed out in the "claims.
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate a practical embodiment of my invent-ion, Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the trunk. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view thereof. Fig. 3 is a view in section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4. Fig. 4is a view in section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a View in section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary side elevational view showing the cover lifted. Fig. 7 is a view in section on the line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig 8'is a front view showing the'cover lifted. Fig. 9 is a fragmentary view of the rear portionof the cover. Fig. 10 is a view in section on the line 10-10 of Fig. 9. Fig. 11 is a detailed sectional view.
It will be understood that the trunk com- A prises a boxlike structure having a hinged cover. Referring to the construction shown in the drawings, the trunk is provided with I a bottomi12. a front wall 14, a rear wall 16 two end walls 18 and 20, and a top member 22, the latter constituting a portion. of the v j be obvious. The trunk 13 covered on the outside and is lined .on the inside with water cover. As shown in Fig. 11, the'walls may be made of veneer consisting of the three layers a, b and c. As shown in Fig. 7 the front edge ofthe top member 22 is dovetailed into the upper edge of a horizontal wooden bar 24: whose outer surface is round ed and a strip 26 disposed at right angles to the member 22 is dovetailed into thelower edge of the bar 24:. The bar 2 1 and the strip 26 constitute part of the cover, the latter being completed by two end pieces 28 whose lower edges are inclined as best shown in Fig. 2 so as to fit upon the inclined top edges of the end walls 18 and 20. When the cover is closed, the end pieces 28 fit outside of strips 30 secured to the inside of and projecting up above the end walls 18 and 20 while theportion 26 of the cover fits outside of a strip 32 secured'tothe inside of and projecting up above the front wall 14. The rear ends of the pieces 28 butt against the rear wall 16. In order to make a tight joint therewith, the rear ends. of the pieces 28 col have thin'plates 34 preferably of metal secured to the outside and these plates as shown in Fig. 4: project rearwardly in, en-
gagement with the ends of the wall 16. The interior of the trunk is :lined with waterproof fabric 36 whichyas shown in Fig. 10,
extends in one piece over the contacting mitered edges of the rear wall 16and top member 22 of the cover so'as to sealthis joint. The exterior ofthe trunk is covered with waterproof fabric 38 which as shown in Fig.
5 extends'up over the exposed surface of the end strips 30 and as shown in Fig.
extends up over the exposed surface of the frontstrip 32. a The fabric 38 also extends 7 around the lower edgesof the strip 26 and end pieces 28. At the top of the trunk, the
16. As shown in Figs. 5 and 7, the inside of the cover is provided with packin material such as a strip of felt 1 1 whic engages the top edge of the side strips 30 and the top edge of the front strip 32 when the cover is .closed.
The advantages of my invention will now proofing material so that it can be readily washed. The constructionof tight joints for all places wherethe cover engages the body portion of the trunk as previously described in detail prevents the entrance of water and dust when the trunk is in use and makes it'particularly adapted for carrying at the rear of an. automobile where it is secured in any suitable ior customary manner.
I claim-- 8 1. A .trunk'comprising a box-like structure having a hinged cover provided with end pieces and thin plates secured to the .rearends of said pieces said plates overlapping the rear wall of said structure for making a tight joint when said cover is closed.
