This invention relates to -improvements in paper boxes,hav1ng particular *reference to boxes'or cartons adapted. to-conta1n= food 1 'move'a portion of the contents and-"thus to f preservetherema ning port-1onagainst-1m- "mediate deterioration which: results (with food products distributed in i the common type of boxes in which noprovision iSf-Hlild to effectively close, the boxes: after the same have been once opened. I r The importance ofcl-osing boxes in which cereal, pastry, fruit, and various other foods are distributed is obvious and does not require emphasis other'than mention of the fact that many food products of this character are packed in hermetically. sealed containers, variously-shaped boxes and cartons,
thus to insurecomplete sanitation and nor-u mal wholesomeness or freshness of the prodnot in the handling and stocking of the same incident to distribution. r a V Upon opening of the container by the con sumer, however, this safeguard provided by the manufacturer is in most part destroyed, a a
part 1 be ng joined ,to part 4 by means of sofaras it relates to the portion of the content remaining in they container after the initial portion has been removed, seventyboxes provided with atight-fitting cover or five to ninety percent of the food, in case of the. average consumer, being thussubjected to more or less unhygienic deterioration in the open or ineffectually closed containers.
To overcome or minimize this serious fault, certain well-known food products, as Quaker Oats for example, are distributed inround lid adapted to be replaced on the boxes after each removal of the content, and thus to preserve the food down tothe last portion remaining in the box'in a state approximating of sealed carton, and is not Well adapted for handling in bulk for the reason that the boxes do not lend themselves to'knocked down form; also, the round box runs greatly body and lid into bu-lk-inpacking and stocking because :of (the Waste space between boxesavhich ,iaddsias much as fifty percent tozQthe :bulk or space i ever 1 that required for {square or: rectangularshaped boxesfor-a likeamount ofiproduct.
l orthe correction OiitllQSQi difiiculties, to
cheapen cost in production;- and handling,
and 'atthe same time to :preserve food prod;
'ucts so: distributed, my invention provides a rectangular-shaped t box, ad-ap'ted tolvabe knocked-down, to be.hermetically,sealeth; it
-desired,= and vprovided avitha {specially coir, ---st ructe(-l lidor coverzcap which. serves to re- .seal theI-box ink-effect 'afteri each. opening lthereof. i
L vIn the accompanying drawings:
- Fig.11killus-tr-atesthe blank from which the ,main portion; ofiithepbox is formed; A r F ig. '2 illustrates the blankfrom which the lid'portion-of the box is formed;
1 1g. 3 is a longitudinal sectional viewof i the box-as shaped into a container with the lid applied,
Fi 4 is an elevation of the box closed and llustrating, by dotted outline,'the application of an outer hermetical wrapper;
Figs. 5 and 6 respectively illustrate the portions of the box in knockeddown form. a r 1 V 1 As here shown, the main portion of the box consists of side portions 1, 2, 3 and 4,
The top endof the box is made special,
consisting of short yieldable cover- sealing strips 10, 11, 12 and 13 which act to stiffen the end of the box and aid materially in effecting a tight-fitting relation of'the lid tight-fitting of the lid will result irrespective of the sealing strips. a
The lid or coverof the box consists of a top portion-14, side portions 15-16 and opposite end portions 17, 18, and 19, the latter portions being adapted to be folded one over another and glued together. The sideportions 1516 in a preferred form of the to the box after the seals have been broken. It will be obvious, however, that normally lid are, provided Withsealing tabs 20 which 7 are adapted to be glued to the body of the box, as illustrated in Fig. 4:, the tabs being adapted to be severed from the lid on perforated or scored lines 21 to remove the lid upon first opening of the box.
As illustratedin Fig. 4 the boxes as used for food products are preferably hermetically sealed by an'outer Wrapper, as indiv catedbythe dotted outline around the box,
L furnished to the manufacturer and as filled .with food productsto be distributed to the consumer. The peculiar construction and manner of applying the lid to the box, having "particular reference to the yieldable sealing strips 10, 11, 12 and 13 Which tend to flare outwardlyvvith their free edges e115 7 gaging the adjacent sides of the lid and thus to elfect a close-fitting relation of'the lid on the box, tend to make a close-fitting cover for the box,the outer sealing tabs 20. serv 'ing to. hold the lid securely in place when the boxes are filled until the seals arebroken upon first opening of the box.
The improved box, asherem shown, is
designed for production on special auto-" matic machinery which makes possible a large reduction in production costof the boxes. 7 7
Having describedmy invention, 1 claim: 1. A rectangular shaped box adapted to l11VlI1g2LI1 open end, a lid for the box adapted to be placed telescopicallyover saidend and having depending flaps on opposite sides thereof adapted to be secured adhesively to the adjacent sides of the box and an outer Wrapper for sealing the box hermetically.
V 2. A rectangular shaped box. having an open end, a lid for the box adapted tobe placed telescopically over said end and having depending flaps on opposite sides thereof, secured to said sides on lines defined by scorings or perforations coinciding 'Witlr.
the lower edges of the lid, and adapted to V be secured adhesively to the adjacent sides of'the box whereby to secure the lid on the box and to adapt the lid for convenient re-' -moval by severing the tabson said lines.
In testimony whereof, I-

SAMUEL BERGSTEIN.
