Description

`Patented Feb.. 8, 1927.
UNITED STATES EAR'LE s. 'MAcPHERsoiL or nnrnor, MICHIGAN, AssIGNoR To Hurraendroit `CAB.
conronATIoN, or DETROILMICHIGAN, A CORPORATION oF VIRGINIA.'
Porrnr VALVE.
Application filed August 25, 1924:..v 'Serial o. 734,090.
The. invention relates to poppet valvesr l and has for its main object the provision ot' an improved poppet valve having provision for facilitating the adjustment'of its abutment member. Another object is the provision of means upon the valve stem andG engageable by awrench for holding the valve stem from rotation during rotation of the abutment member which is threaded upon the y valve, stem. A furtherobject is the provision of a valve'spring retainer engageableby a vrench and nonrotatably connected to. the
valve stem for holding the latter, from r0- n n l tation during rotation of its abutment member.
With thelse as -v ell as other objects in view Vthe invention resides inthe novelv features j of construction and `combinations and arjeetion 9 slidably eril herall s'acedl u wardl 'extendin P P y p 'p y g' tion'with avalve and its stem,oaspring enrangements of. parts as -inore fully hereinafter set forth. 1
In the drawings Figure l is a cross section through aportion of an internal combustion engine and showing my improved poppet valve;
lFigure Q. is a cross section on the line 2-2 'of Figure 1. l is the poppet valve and 2`the valve stem having its lower end portion threaded and provided with the longitudinallyex.- tending groove 3 which preferably terminates above the threads. 4 is a nut threaded upon'the lower end portion of the valvestem l2. and 'forming the abutment member -or engagement by suitable valve actuating inean's,`s uch as the lever 5. 6 is a lock nut also threaded upon the lower endportion of the valve stein and engageable With the upper end of the nut .4.. 7 is the'retainer for the valve spring 8, erably formedof heet metal and' having the integral inwarlty extending key or pro,-
3 of the valve stem to nonrotatably fcon neet the retainer to the valve stem. This re- -tainer has' provision .for engagement` by awrench which consists ,preferably of the projections 10. l v IWith this arrangement adjustment ofthe nut or abutment member 4. may be readily accomplished .by irst applying Wrenches to the -nut orabutmentmember 4 and lock nut this retainer being'- prefgageable 1n the groove 6 landl then 'moving the lock -nut f6 llongitudinally upward'alongthe valve stem 2 by rotating the same and holding the, valve stem from rotation by means of' a Wrench applied to the .valve spring retainer 7. 4
Then the nut or abutment member Llmay be rotated to the desired position longitudinallyof the Valve stem 2 while -holding thclock nut 6v is'tightened' down upon the nut Y or abutment member 4. Y
What I claim as my invention is: 1. In a poppet valve the combination with the valve and its stem, of an abutment member threaded upon 'said' stein, a member upon said stein engageable by a wrench for holding saidstem from rotationwduring rotation ot' said abutment member and a-locking element embracing the stein Jfor locking the abutment member in-its-` adjusted position;
` 2. v-In a poppet valve, the combination with the 4valve and its stem, of aiiabutinent member threaded upon said stein and aseoond member 'slidable longitudinallyl of said stem .but nonrotatably connected thereto vfor engagement by a Wrench to hold said stem I from rotation during rotation of said abutment member and a locking element engagesok able Withthe stemv and the abutment members t .Y
3. In a poppet valve.. the combination with the valve and its stem,of 4a nut threaded upon said stem,l a lock nut also threaded upon said stem and a member upon said` stem ,engageable -by a wrench for holdin said stem from rotation during rotation o either. of said nuts.' A l 4.111 a poppet valve, the combination with the valve and'its stem, of ajnut thread- ,ed upon said stem, avlock nut threaded uponsaid stem and a valve spring retainermsplined upon said stem andhaving provision for engagement by `from rotation a wrench to .hold 'said lstein l during rotation of either of 5.
