JOHN COYLE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
SHEET-METAL CONTAINER.
Application filed. January 5, 1925.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in sheet metal containers, and more particularly to a metal container having a cover for closing the same, and a bail whereby said container may be carried.
An object of the invention is to provide a container of the above type wherein the top Which forms the cover seat for the cover is also provided with means for supporting the bail, which top including the bail supporting means may be rolled into a double seam joining the top to the body portion of the container.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a sectional view through a con tainer embodying my improvements, with the top placed on the container body preparatory to the rolling of the outer portion of the top into a double seam;
Fig. 2 is a similar view, but showing the bail supporting means as folded back on the top portion preparatory to securing said top and hail support to the body portion of the container;
Fig. 3 is a similar view, but showing these parts rolled into a double seam, and
Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank forming the top of the container and the bail supporting means.
In the drawings, I have shown a metal container comprising a cylindrical body portion 1 which may be made in the ordinary way, and has a bottom attached thereto by an ordinary double seam. The upper end of the container is closed by a top 2 which is bent upwardly and thence downwardly to form a friction Wall 3.
In Fig. 4 of the drawings, I have shown a blank from which the top portion 2 is formed. Said blank is provided with a central opening 4, and the metal adjacent said opening-is bent so as to form a fric- Said blank is provided with oppositely disposed projections 5, 5 each of which has a perforation 6. These projections form'the bail supporting means for the container. The projection is folded back on the body portion of the top as clearly shown in Fig. I of the drawings.
Serial No. 536.
Said ear is bent so as to conform to the shaping of the top, and at its inner end is turned up so as to form a substantially ver tical wall 7 This vertical wall 7 is spaced from the parts 8 of the top and ear, which extend a slight distance down into the container body. The container body has a flange 9 at its upper end. The top and the projecting portion 5 which is to form the ear for supporting the bail are laid over this flange and are rolled with the flange into a double seam as shown in Fig. 4s. The bail 10 is semi-circular in form, and has its ends bent at right angles as indicated at 11, so as to enter the perforations 6 in the ears 5. As above noted, the raised wall 7 is spaced from the parts 8. The bail can be turned down into this space and housed thereby. It will be seen that the weight of the contents of the container is carried by a part rolled into the double seam at the top of the container body, and therefore, a very rigid and durable support is made for the container. The opening 4 is adapted to be closed by a friction top cover 12 which is provided with a friction wall 13 adapted to engage the friction wall 3 on the top of the container. The upper edge of the wall 13 is bent outwardly and thence inwardly to form a reinforced edge 14, which limits the inward movement of the friction top cover and also provides a reinforced edge on said cover, which may be pried up to remove the cover.
The part of the top which forms the ears for supporting the bail is integral with the top, and this assures that the ears shall be properly positioned on opposite sides of the container body.
It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and arrangement of the parts may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention, as set forth in the appended claim.
Having'thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A sheet metal container comprising a cylindrical body portion, a top for closing said cylindrical body portion, the metal forming the top being shaped so as to provido hail supports, said bail supports being turned inwardly and upwardly at their inner ends to form the bail supporting por' tion, said metal forming the top and the bail supports at the outer edge thereof being rolled together into a double seam With the flange of the container, said top having an opening inside of the bail supports and having the metal thereof bent to form a friction Wall and a cover having a friction Wall 10 for engaging the friction Wall on the top.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature.
JOHN COYLE.
