l LATCH;
Application led Junc 7,
This invention relates to latches such as are used for holding a movable part to a staticnary part and has for its rineipal object the providing of such a latc that includes certain novel features which render it simple in construction and ellicient in` operation.
Another object is to provide such a latch which will act to draw the parts together when in operative position and will prevent the same from rattling.
A further object is to provide such alatch which comprises a longitudinally screwoperated bolt suitably prevented from turning, and operated by means of a handle which is provided with means for preventing the same from inadvertently turnin The above being among the objects o the present invention, the same consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts to be 'hereinafter described,
with reference to the accompanying drawing, and then claimed, having the above and other objects in view.
ln the drawing which illustrates a suitable embodiment of the present invention, and in which like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views,
Figure 1 is a side view of the latch and associated parts in operative position, certain of the parts being shown in section and broken away to more clearly show the invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the bolt guide member.

l Figure 4 is a perspective view of the :ee r.
i re 5 is a perspective view of the collar wiich guides and supports the handle. Figure 6 is a perspective view of the washer used' to prevent the handle from inadvertently turning.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of a fragment of an automobile showing the adaptation of the present invention thereto.
, Figure 8 is a section taken on the line 8--8 of Figure 1.
For the purpose of illustration, a latch embodying the present invention is shown incorporated in an automobile 10 of theV roadster type which is provided with a rear com ai'tment 11 to which access is gained by liftin the cover 12 hinged at its forward upper e ge 13 to-the body of the automobile l5 10. The rear end of the cover 12 can be 'ing'is formed toa shape co 1924. Serial lo. 718,855.
lifted vertically upward from closed position about the hinged edge 13 in the opera.- tion of opening the cover, and the loweredge thereof is adapted to extend downward] to a position substantially flush with the 00 tom of the body sill 14 when in closed position. As in the conventional constructions, the cover 12 is provided with a lateral dan d portion adapted to overlie the edge of t e openin'r leading into the rear com- 05 partaient 11, tliereby to support the cover 12 and prevent rain or moisture from the rear compartment 1L The bolt portion of the latch is positioned in the vertically disposed free edge portion of .the cover 12 and consists essentially of a non-rotating hook-end bolt 15 longitudinally movable perpendicular to' the plane of the adjacent art of the cover 12 by means of a rotatable but' longitudinally im- 75 movable handle 16, the shank-of which is axially co-incident therewith and which is internally screw threaded to receive the Y threaded shank of the bolt 15 thereby to cause longitudinal movement thereof. The 00 hook end 17 of the bolt 15 is adapted to en- Igage the reversed hook end 18 of the keeper i-uember 19 secured to the upper face of the body sill 14.
The bolt 15 and handle 16 are supported 35 by the cover frame member 20 in the following manner. An opening 2l is provided in the frame member 20, and proyecting into the opening V21 is the collar member 22 whose outer edge is provided with a laterally extending Harige 23 adaptedto overlie theedges of the opening 21 and be secured to the cover thereby, and Whose inner edge is provided with a plurality of notches 24. 'I'he shank of the handle 16 is received iu the collar 22 95 and is of such a diameter as to loosel fit the same and is provided with a circum tial bead or Bange 25 which is ada ted to abut against the outer surface of e collar 22 and thus limit the inward movement of the handle 16. The shank of the handle 16, from a point adjacent the flange 25 and inwardly therefrom, is milled of to'provi' e two flat surfaces as shown most clearl in' section in Figure 8. Overrthis milled shyank 1N is placed the washer'26` whose central opennding to the shape of the milled portion o the shank and is revented from turning relative to the sha thereby. The washer-26 is further 31 lin provided with projections 27 which are adapted to seat in the notches 24 1n the inner edge of the collar 22. A spring 28 encircling the shank of the handle 16 is com ressed between the washer 26 and the was er 29 the latter of which is held in place on the shank b by the pin 30. It is evident that the spring 28 holds the handle 16 in place and tends to hold the projections 27 in the notches 24 and thereby prevent inadvertent turning of the handle 16 or rattling of the same. When pressure is applied to the handle 16 to turn the same theprojections 27 are forced out of the notches 2li-against the pressure of the spring 28 and the handle is then capable of Vbeing turned as desired.
On the rear face of. the frame member 20 is secured a plate 31 provided with an opening 32 in alignment' with the shank of the handle 16; the metal punched ont to form the opening being bent over on the lower edge to form a bearing surface for the lower surface of the bolt 15. Secured to the plate 31 by welding or other suitable means is a guide member 33 projecting out therefrom parallel to the bolt 15 and is provided with a slot 34, its lower surface forming a bearing surface at the upper edge of the openin 32 for the upper surface of the bolt 15. proection or fin 35 Projecting upwardly from t e end of the bo t 15 is received in and guided by the slot 34 and the bolt 15 is prevented-from rotative movement thereb The keeper member 19' is .provided wit an opstanding projection 36 for limiting the inward or oosening movement of the bolt 15 in order to prevent the same from bein unscrewed out of engagement with he han le 16. The hook end 17 of the bolt 5 and the hook 18 of the keeper member 19 are preferably formed to provide en aging cam-like surfaces so that when the andle 16 is turned to draw the two surfaces into engagement, the cover 12 willbe drawn downwardly as well as inwardly against the body 10 and will thereby hold the same securely in place and f prevent rattling.
It is evident from the fore oing that the construction herein disclose embodies a novel and ellicient construction and although but one embodiment of the invention is shown and described I do not limit my invention to the same as it is evident that it is capable of certain formal changes and modiications without departing from the spirit or substance of the broad invention, the scope of which is commensurate with the appended claims.
