This invention relates to improvements in elevator car construction and particularly to the post and panel construction in such cars.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a post construction Which will permit the side panels of the car to be attached thereto and the joint formed by the post and panel rendered light proof.
A further object is to simplify the post construction so that the same may be produced at less cost, the simplicity of construction also greatly facilitating the assembly of the posts and panels during the construction of the car.
Nit-h these and other objects in vievv the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, all as Will be hereinafter more fully described and the novel features thereof particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Further, as the present invention has to do only With-the posts embodied in the sides of the car it is deemed unnecessary to illustrate the floor and upper portions of the car.
lin accordance With the present invention both the corner posts and the posts to which the panels are connected between corners, or, what might be referred to as the center posts, are each provided with a pair of laterally disposed arms to which the side panels are adapted to be attached. Preferably the side panels are attached indirectly to the arms of the posts by means of What is called panel framing. The side panels are secured as by weldingto the panel framing and the panel framing in turn is bolted to the arms of the post. ln accordance with the present invention, means are also provided at the exterior of the joint between the panel framing and post arms for preventing the admission of light to the interior of the car through said joint. i
In the specific embodiment which has been utilized for illustrating the present invention the corner posts are formed with the arms 10, 11, the arm 11 having the panel framing 12 of the side panel 13 attached thereto by means such as the bolt 14 and nut 15. As before generally described, the panel 18 itself may be attached to the panel framing 12 by Welding and at the exterior end of the arm 11 there is provided a flange 16 preferably formed on said arm 11, and odset so as to completely close the joint formed by the abutting surfaces of said arm and the panel framing 12.
The side panel 17 of the rear Wall of the car is similarly attached to the panel framing 18 for the rear Wall and the latter is attached to the arm 10 of the corner post by the bolt and nut arrangement 19 as in the case of panel framing 12. Arm 10, like arm 11, is also formed with a flange 2O Which is offset to close the joint formed between the arm 10 and panel framing 12.
In the case of the center post or me post which is adapted to connect tivo side panels` at a point intermediate any one of the car Walls, said post is preferably of substantially U-shaped4 cross-section being provided with a central portion 21 which projects into the interior of the car and the two arms 22, 23 extending outwardlv therefrom for attachment of the side panels 1S. 24. This attachment of side panels 18, 2st to said arms 22, 23 is identical to the form of attachment utilized at the corner posts, each of said side panels being Wel-ded to panel framing 25 which, in turn, are secured to the arms 22, 23 of the post by the bolt and nuts 26. Also, as in the case of the corner post, each of the arms 22, 23 of the central post are formed with flanges 27 at their exterior ends so disposed With respect to the post as to close the joint formed by said arms and the abutting panel frames. y
Post construction such as this has been found to be quite advantageous in that it can be produced at a comparatively low cost and, in addition, it greatly facilitates the assembly of the posts and side panels. Furthermore, the outwardly directed arms of the posts can conveniently be formed With the light proofing flanges Which do not intertere with the assembly of the variousl parts. Ditliculty has always been experienced in preventing the admission of light into the interior ot' elevatorl cars through cracks or crevices at the points where various sections of the car construction are joined, but with the light prooting flanges of the present invention which extend throughout the height of t-he car it will be apparent that the admission of light through any of the joints at these vpoints is an impossibility. In addition to the advantages of the construction shown and claimed herein, which have already been set forth, it will also be appreciated that the particular forms of postsv lend themselves quite readily to the ornamentation of the interior of the car, the inwardly projecting' portions of the corner posts torming a corner of pleasing appearance and the central portion and the inwardly project` ing portions of the center post located within the car constituting a pilaster which also adds to the ornamental design of the car interior.
What we claim is:
l. In an elevator car, the combinat-ion with the panels of adjacent sides of the car, of a separate corner post having angularly disposed arms to which said panels are attached, means for securing said panels to the post arms, and means carried by said post closing the joint between the post arms and panels at the exterior of the car whereby admission of light through said joint to the interior ot the car is prevented.
2. In an elevator car, the combination with the panels of adjacent sides of the car, of a separate corner post having angularly disposed arms to which said panels are adapted to be attached, means for securing the panels to the post arms1 and a flange on each of said post arms closing the joint between said arms and panels to prevent admission ot light through the joint to the interior ot' the car.
ln an elevator car, the combination with two adjacent side panels, of an intermediate connecting member between said panels, said connecting member extending vertically ot' the sides and having arms projecting outwardly from the side panels, said side panels abutting against said arms, and means carried by said arms for preventing admission of light through the oint formed by the abutting panels and arms.
4. In an elevator car, the combination with two adjacent side panels, of an intermediate separate post between said panels, said post extending vertically of the sides and having arms projecting outwardly from the side panels, said side panels abutting against said arms, and means formed integrally with the arms of the` posts for preventing admission or' light through the joint formed by the abutting panels and arms.
5. ln an elevator car, the combination with two adjacent side panels7 o an intermediate connect-ing member between said panels, said connecting member extending vertically of the car and having arms projecting outwardly from the side panels, means for securing the side panels to said arms, and flanges formed at the exterior edges or' the arms and disposed laterally oi" the joint bctween said arms and the connected panels, whereby the admission ot light to the interior of the car through the joints formed by the arms and panels. is prevented.
6. In an elevator car, the combination with two side panels, of an intermediate connecting member between said panels, said connecting member comprising a post having a central portion projecting into the interior of the car and provided with arms projecting outwardly beyond the side panels, means tor attaching the side panels to the arms with a portion of said arms located within the interior or the car, and flanges at the exterior edges oit' said arms closing the joint formed between said arms and the connected panels.
