PAPER DISPLAY BOX.

My invention relates to double or twopiece display boxes, comprismg an outer box or cover and an inner box or tray, adapted for the storage and shipment of 6 relatively heavy toothpaste and the like, and which may be conveniently used for display purposes on store counters and the l ke. One of the principal objects of my 1nvent1on is to provide a single blank which may be quickly and readily folded to form a rigid box or cover for the inner box or tray and which is provided with integral elements which may be bent inwardly to form an opening in which the tray may be set at an 1 angle to conveniently and suitably display the article carried in the tray. Another important object of my invention is to provide a single blank which may be expeditiously and easily folded to form a rigid Z0 inner box or tray with the inner sides of the tray inclined and provided with suitable notches or openings for receiving and supporting the opposite ends of articles, such as tubes of tooth paste, shaving cream, paints, which should be displayed in a pleasing and orderly manner.

With the above and incidental ob ects 1n view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, the essential elements whereof are recited in the appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in full in the accompanying drawings, which form 34 part of this specification.

Referring first to the inner box or tray shown in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, the blank as shown in Fig. 1 comprises an outer bottom panel 11 to the edges of which are hinged by scoring the outer side panels 12 and 13' and the end panels 14 and 15. Inner side panels 16 and 17 are hinged by scoring to the respective outer side panels 12 and 13 and narrow flaps 18 are hinged to the rear end edges of the inner side panels 16 and 17. An inner bottom panel section 19 is hinged to the outer edge of the panel 16 and a corresponding inner bottom panel section 20 is hinged by scoring to the outer edge of the panel 17. To the outer or upper edge of the end panel 15 is hinged the top panel or lid 22 which is preferably scored at 23 and 24 for purposes which will appear later.

Interlocking flaps 25 and 26 are hinged to the rear ends of the outer side panels 12 and 13 and to the opposite ends of these side panels are hinged locking flaps 27 and 28. Hinged to the forward or upper edge of the panel 14 is an inner end panel 29 which is preferably scored at 30 to facilitate its manipulation upon forming of the box by folding the blank. The outer edge of the panel 29 is notched to provide end flaps 32, a central flap 33 and intermediate flaps The inner box or tray may be formed from the above-described blank in the following manner: Supposing the blank be laid on a flat table, the outer side walls 12 and 13 are raised to substantially vertical positions, and the flaps 25 and 26 are then bent toward each other and interlocked, the flap 25 being provided with a slit 35 and the flap 26 with a locking notch 36 adapted to cooperate with the slit 35, as is well understood in the art.- The end flaps 27 and 28 are bent toward 1 each other, the outer end panel 14 is raised and the p'anel 29 is bent down into engagement with the inner sides of the flaps 27 and 28; these are rovided with square 1 notches or recesses 37 and when the panel 1 29 is bent over, the tongues or flaps 34 are inserted. through the recesses or notches 27 so that the rear sides of the lower ends of the flaps 34 engage the outer sides of the flaps 27 and 28 immediately below the notches while the flaps 32 and 33 engage the inner sides of the flaps 27 and 28, the flaps. 27 and 28 and panel 29 being interlocked in this manner. The inner side panels 16 and 17 may then be bent to the positions shown in Figs. 2 to 6,'in which positions the bottom panel sections 19 and rest upon the outer bottom panels 11, the edges of the sections 19 and 20 being in abutting engagement. It will be observed that. when the box is folded, the side panels 16 and 17 are then inclined downwardly and inwardly, being wider than the outer side panels 12 and 13. Before the side panels 16 and 17 are bent to this position the narrow flaps 18 are bent at right angles to the side panels so that they engage and press against the flaps and 26 after the box is folded.

\Vhen the inner box or tray is closed by the lid or top 22, the lid extends over the box as shown in Fig. 10 and its outer end is bent at 24 to form the end section 21 which is positioned between and engaged by the forward ends of the inner side panels 16 and 17 and the rear sides of the flaps 32 and 33 to retain the lid 22 in closing position. As best shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the forward ends of the inner side panels 16 and 17 terminate slightly short of the corresponding ends of the panels 12 and 13 and sections 19 and 20, this being done to provide narrow spaces between the ends of the panels 16 and 17 and the rear side of the panel 29 to accommodate the latter and the section 21 of the lid 22 when the latter is in closing position. When the box is opened the lid may be bent back upon itself along the scored line 23 and the flap 21 inserted between the flaps 18 and the locking flaps 25 and 26. as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and 5.

The panel 16 is provided with a plurality of equally-spaced U-shaped slits 39 and the I panel 17 is provided with the same number of V-shaped slits 40 spaced in the same way. If desired, the flaps 41 formed by the slits 39 may be but partially severed at their lower ends from the panel 16 and the upper ends of the flaps 42, formed by the slits 40 may be but partially severed from the panel 17, such ends of the flaps 41 and 42 being freed or entirely separated when the articles are put in the tray, by slight pressure on the flaps. the points of union being relatively small and weak. I have shown these forms of slits as they are particularly adapted when the box is used for the storage and displaying of tubes of paste, glue, paint, shaving cream. and other products. The

' round heads or nipples of the tubes, as shown in Fig. 4, are adapted to seat in the lower ends of the openings formed by the U-shaped slits' 89 and the pointed or wedge-shaped ends of the tubes are adapted to seat and rest in the slots or openings formed by the slits 40. It will be understood, of course, that these slits may be of any shape or form and that various articles, other than tubes, may be supported thereby.

Referring now to the outer box or cover shown in Figs. 7, 8 and 9, the blank, as shown in Fig. 7. comprises a top panel to the edges of which are hinged by scoring the side panels 51 and 52 and an end panel 47 scored at 49 to provide a section or flap 48. The respective ends of the side panels 51 and 52 are provided with flaps 46. The outer edge of the panel 52 is hinged to one edge of the bottom panel 53 which at'its opposite edge is provided with a narrow flap or panel 54. The rear end of the panel 53 is provided with an end panel 55 scored at 56 to form an end section or flap 57. The top panel 50 of the box is provided with two parallel and transverse rows of perforations 58 suitably spaced from each other, and the rows of perforations are joined by a central longitudinal slit 59. Parallel with the slit 55,) and on each side thereof the top panel is scored at 60 between the rows of perforations 58.

The outer box or cover may be formed from the blank in the following manner: Supposing the blank to be laid-on a fiat table. the side panels 51 and 52 are raised to substantially vertical positions; the bottom panel 53 is bent over to a horizontal position and the flap 54 is bent at right angles thereto to engage the inner side of the panel 51 to which it is glued or otherwise fastened. each other; the end panel 55 is bent downwardly and the flap 57 is bent at right angles thereto and inserted between the top panel 50 and the edges of the rear flaps 46. The flap 57 may be glued or otherwise secured to the top panel of the box if desired, so that the rear end is permanently closed but it may be left free. The outer box or cover is, of course, the proper size to .receive the inner box or tray and after the tray is positioned in the outer box for storage or shipment, the forward flaps 46 are bent towards each other and the front end panel 47 is bent downwardly (Figs. 8 and 9) and the flap 48 is inserted between the edges of the flaps 46 and the bottom panel 53.

After the lid or top 22 of the inner box or tray is turned back out of closing position the tray may be inserted through the opening left by the sections 61 and 62. as shown in Fig. 4 the edges of opening being such as to support the tray at the desired angle of inclination.

of course, be considered either as the top panel or bottom panel of the box and I have referred to it herein as the top panel merely for the sake of convenience, and it is my intention that it shall mean either the top or bottom panel.

It Will be understood that, although I have shown but one form of embodiment of my invention, it is susceptible of various F changes and modifications, all coming within the scope ,and spirit of my invention, and defined in the followin claims. For example, the sections 61 an 62 may be omitted, the opening in the top panel being formed when the blank is formed.

I claim:

1. A combination cover and support box comprising bottom, to and side panels, the top panel being provlded with two transverse and parallel slits or rows of perforations, a central slit or row of perforations connecting the same, and scorings to form side and bottom sections, adapted, when pressedin, to leave an opening in which a tray, stored in a box, may be mounted at the suitable angle for display purposes.

2. A blank for a box comprising a bottom panel, outer side panels and end panels hinged thereto, inner side panels hinged to the outer side panels and Wider than the latter, and aligned flaps in said inner side panels hinged at one end thereto to form openings for reception of the articles to be stored.

3. A blank for a box comprising a bottom panel, outer side panels and end panels hinged thereto, inner side panels hinged to the outer side panels and Wider than the latter and formed for reception of the articles to be stored, and inner bottom panel sections hinged to the inner side panels.

4. A blank for a box comprising a bottom panel, outer side panels and end panels hinged thereto, inner side panels hinged to the outer side panels wider than the latter and provided with aligned and suitably spaced slits or openings, and inner bottom pannel sections hinged to the inner side panels.

5. A blank for a knock-down box, comprising a bottom panel, end and outerside panels hinged thereto, a to panel hinged to one end panel, interlocking end flaps, inner side panels hinged to the outer side panels and wider than the latter and narrow end flaps on the inner side panels, adapted to engage the top to hold it in position.

6. A knock-down box comprising a bottom panel, end and outer side panels hinged thereto, inclined inner side panels hinged to the outer side panels and adapted to re ceive the articles to be stored, and inner bottom panel sections hinged to said inner side panels and having their edges abutting.

7. A knock-down box comprising a bottom panel, end and outer side panels hinged thereto, inclined inner side panels hinged to the outer side panels and provided with aligned and spaced openings for reception of the articles .to be stored therein, and inner bottom panel sections hin ed to the inner side panels and having their edges abutting.

8. A knock-down box comprising a bottom panel, outer side panels hinged thereto, end closures, a top hinged at one end to one end closure, inclined inner side panels hin ed to the outer side panels and terminating slightly short of the other end closure, narrow flaps hinged to the opposite ends of the inner side sections and inner bottom panel sections hinged to the inner side sections and having their edges abutting.
