Application filed March 9, 1925. Serial No. 14,279;
Thisinvention relates to stocking tops, and particularly to tops for golf stockings and other fancy or so-calle'd sport hose.
One object of the invention is to proide a double top for the stocking, con sis'ting of inner and outer members, attachec at their upper edges to each other and to the upper edge of the stocking body, said members each having an unfinished inner surface and a finished outer surface, the construction being such that both sections may be turned down to form a cult top in which the outer surface of the outer top member will be exposed to show a stocking top of one pattern or design, "or so that such outer top member may be drawnupward over the leg to expose the outer surface of the inner top member, whereby a stocking top of a different design or pattern may be presented.
A further object of the invention is to provide a double stocking top of the character described the sections of which are united to the upper edge of the stocking body by a seam adapted to permit ready and convenientadjustment of the stocking top members without bulk-iness along .the seam line. g
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which r Figure l is a perspective view showing the application of the invention with both stocking top sect-ions turned down to pre sent the finished face of the outer top section, a portion of said outer top section being broken away to expose the finished face of the inner top section. I v
Figure 2 is avertical section through the upper port-ion of the stocking, the stocking top and the trousers leg shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Figure 2 showing the outer top section drawn upward so as to expose the finished. surface of the lower top section for display.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, 1 represents the body of a stocking, such as a golf stocking or other like sport hose, and 2 designates generally the improved stocking top applied thereto.
The stocking top 2 consists of an outer section 3 and an inner section 4:, each consist-ing of an open ended tube or band knitted or otherwise suitably formed. Each band or section is preferably provided with a selvaged upper edge, and of such relative dimensions that one section is adapted to lie within and to be enclosed by the other, as shown in Figures 1 and 2. AS shown, the selvaged upper edges of the sections 3 and 4 are turned inward and doubled and brought to bear against the doubled outturned upper edge 5 of the stocking body 1, such doubled edges of the stocking top sections and the stocking body being united by stitching 6 t o form a scam, the folds of which are adapted to lie in close compass and permit snug fitting of the parts together, as will appear by reference to Figures 2 and of the drawing.
The outer stocking section 3 is provided with an inner unfinished surface 7 and an outer finished surface 8, while the inner stocking section 1 is similarly provided with an inner unfinished surface 9 and an outer finished surface 10. The said stocking sections are coextensive in length, so that when said stocking sections are both turned down over the upper portion of the stocking body, as shown in Figures 1 and 2, a doubled cufflike stocking top will be presented, down over upon the upper portion of which may be drawn the knitted band 11 of the kneelength trousers 12 customarily worn with stockings of this type. When the stocking top sections are thus arranged, the inner stocking top section 4: will lie between the outer stocking top section 3 and the stocking body 1 and its finished surface 10wil1 be concealed from View, while the finished surface 8 of the outer stocking section 3 will be exposed to represent the display pattern of the stocking top. A garter 13, consisting of a band of rubber or other elastic material, may be placed around the stocking body just below the line of the seam between the same and the stocking top sections so as to hold the stocking from displacement, in which position the garter will be enclosed and wholly concealed from view at all times by the stocking top section at.
When it is desired to change the appear ance of the stockin as a whole, and particularly of the stocking top, this may be effected, as shown in Figure 3. by drawing the outer stocking top section 8 upwardly over upon the limb above the knee, in which position it will be concealed by the trousers, whereby the outer surface of the inner stocktug section 4 will be exposed so that its ill? finished surface 10 will be presented to view. As the surfaces 8 and 10 of the two stocking sections 3 and 4 are of contrasting colors, designs or patterns it will thus be seen that in effect two stocking tops are provided for each stocking, either one of which may be used at will for display purposes, enabling the wearer to vary the general appearance of the stockings for obtaining different fancy effects or to enable his hose to be changed to accord with style or color variations in other portions of his apparel. It will be observed that the construction of the seam is such as to give a desired spacing fullness to the appearance of the stocking sections, so that comparatively thin material may be used with the effect or appear ance of heavy material, the construction at the same time being such as to relieve the stocking top of any appearance of undue bulkiness at or in the region of the seam line. The described arrangement of the seam furthermore ensures strength of construction and allows both stocking top sections to be turned upwardly for greater ease and convenience in washing or otherwise cleansing the hose.
A stocking constructed with an improved stocking top embodying my invention enables the wearer to change the appearance of his hose by the simple process of adjust ing the stocking top sections as described, in order to obtain greater variety of appearance in his sporting apparel, without the necessity of providing himself with a large number of stockings. A single pair of stockings will thus perform the service of two, so far as appearance is concerned. In case the knee trousers are short, which sometimes happens the outer stocking section when drawn upwardly will not only cover the deficiency, but will give finish and protection in cold weather.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim 1. A stocking comprising a stocking body, and a stocking top consisting of inner and outer tubular sections of substantially equal lengths lying eXteriorly of said stocking body and attached at their upper edges to each other and to the upper edge of the stocking body, each stockiing top section being provided with an outer display surface, said display surfaces of the stocking top sections contrasting in appearance with each other.
2. A stocking comprising a stocking body having an ornamental top, said ornamental top consisting of two tubular sections of substantially equal lengths and difierent styles, colors or patterns, said stockng top sections lying exteriorly of said stocking body, the stocking body and stocking top sections having turned edges seamed together.
3. A stocking comprising a stocking body provided with an ornamental top, said ornamental top comprising a pair of tubular sections of substantially equal lengths, each having a finished outer surface and an unfinished inner surface, the finished surfaces of said sections having ornamental pattern designs contrasting in appearance with each other, said stocking sections lying exteriorly of the stocking body, said stocking sections each having an upper edge inturned and the stocking body having its upper edge out-turned and lying against the turned edges of the top sections, said turned edges of the stocking top sections and the stocking being stitched together.
4. A stocking comprising a stocking body, and an ornamental top for said stocking body, said top consisting of two tubular sections of substantially equal lengths lying exteriorly of said stocking body and normally one within and concentric with the other, said sections being free from connection with each other at their lower edges and united to the stocking and to each other at their upper edges, and said sections having outer display surfaces contrasting in appearance with each other, whereby when the stocking top sections are in normal position with the outer section enclosing the inner one the display surface of the outer section will be exposed and the display surface of the inner section concealed, and whereby the outer section may be turned up to expose the display surface of the inner section and to form an extension top for the stocking.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ALBERT E. SANBORN.
