RADIATOR SHIELD.
Application filed December 9. 1925.
rlhis invention relates to improvements in radiator shields for motor vehicles for the purpose of preventing the entrance of cold external air to the interior of the hood of the vehicle, either, while the vehicle is loeing` operated, or, when it is not being operated. It is a well known fact that. a gasolene internal combustion engine is more etlicient when the temperature is maintained at practically 180o F. The present invention is therefore design-ed for maintaining that temperature as near as possible.
The invention, broadly, comprises a plate of metal which is formeel with an opening and a. flexible curtain for closing, or partially closing the opening as desired. Also means for securing the metal plateto the front end of the radiator.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the radiator of a motor vehicle showing the improvement attached thereto with the flexible curtain member' closing the opening of the device.
Fig. 2 is a detail view of the plate removed from the radiator and with the flexible curtain member partially rolled upward.
Fig. 3 is a det-ail sectional view on a larger scale on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail view of the metal plate men'iber removed from the radiator with the curtain member rolled upward to fully uncover the opening of the plate member.
Fig. 5 is a sectional detail on a larger scale on the lin-e 5 5 of Fig. 4, and
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 6 6 of Fig. 1 showing the curtain mem ber lowered and secured in place to close the opening and the securing strap in a depend ing position.
Referring to the drawings in detail: y
1 designates the radiator part of the motor vehicle; 2 the radiator openings through which the external air passes for cooling purposes. 3 is a rectangular piece of sheet metal which is formed with the central rectangular shaped opening 4. 5 designates small openings in the corners of the metal plate 3 for securing the same to the outer front surface of the radiator and over the openings 2 by means of bolts indicated at 6 or other suitable devices. 7 designates Serial No. 74,386.
a curtain piece of flexible water-proof ma terial of fabric which, at its upper end, passes through the opening 4 to the inner surface of the plate 3 where its upper edge portion 7 is secured thereto-by the hollow rivets 8. Also attached to the sheet metal plate 3 are the rotatable curtain `securing buttons 9. The iiexible curtain piece 7 is formed with the elliptical shaped openings 10 which receive the rotatable securing buttons 9 for retaining the flexible curtain member 7 in place along its sides and lower edge. 11 designates a rotatable button securing device at the upper edge of the plate 3 for retaining the curtain when folded as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. 12 designates a securing strap that is attached to the button 11 on the inner surface of the plate 3. rlhe lower end of this strap is formed with an opening 13 to receive the securing device 11, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5.
The device is usedas follows: l/Vhen it is desired to fully close the opening 4 of the sheet metal frame 3 the curtain 7 is lowered into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 6. It is secured in place by the rotatable buttons 9 entering'the openings 10. When it is desired to partially close the opening 4 the curtain is folded as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3. The lower edge of the curtain 7 being carried upward and retained in place by the securing means 11. When it is desired to fully uncover the opening 4, the curtain is rolled up as indicated in Figs. 4 and 5. The securing strap 12 is then carried around the curtain 7 and the opening 13, in its lower end, is passed over the securing means 11.
The entire device may be readily attached and removed by means of the openings 10 and the rotatable buttons 9.
l/Vhat l claim is:
In a device of the class described and in combination with a radiator, a metal plate formed with a centrally disposed opening, and having openings to receive securing means for attaching the plate to the radiator, which means are passed through the cellular openings of the radiator, a curtain piece of flexible material for wholly or partially covering the opening in the plate, the upper end of th-e curtain being attached to the inner upper surface of the plate, the
Curtain having openings along` its side and bottom edges, securing means on the plate for entering the openings, a strap, a button for attaching the strap to the inner upper surface oi the plate and bac-k of the om`-` tain, the strap having an opening at its lower end, the strap serving to receive and retain the Curtain when it is rolled up to uncover the Whole surface of the opening in the plate and the opening` in its end i'e- 10 eeiving the said button, the openings in the side of the ou'tain serving to retain the curtain in a partially folded position.
