Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,593, dated April 6, 1875; application filed January 30, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORRIN GOLLlER, of Sacramento, in the county of Sacramento and State of California, have invented an Improved Boot-Olamp for Boot-Blacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

The object of my invention is to provide means for holding the boot in position upon a standard or pedestal during the operation of polishing it.

It consists of a plate or rest to the under side of which is placed a slotted lever or plate which serves to operate a clamp placed in the plate near the toe, which en gages the boot and holds it fast by means of a spring-tooth engaging the teeth of a rack.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a top view of my device; Fig. 2, a bottom view, and Fig. 3 a side view.

Arepresents the rest or plate, which is made to conform to the shape of the sole of a boot or shoe. In each side of the plate or rest and near the toe are placed arms B, having projecting pins 0 O, which move in slots made in the bottom. The clampinglever D, consists of aflat plate, having curved slots D cut in it, and so arranged that the projecting pins 0 G will extend and pass through the plate. This lever operates on a pivot, E, and is held in place by a spring-tooth, F, one end of which acts as a key for the pin, and the opposite end as a tooth to hold the clamp in position when the boot is engaged by it. This tooth engages the teeth on a circular rack, G, on the clamping-lever D.

In operating with my device, the boot is placed on the rest or plate A, and the lever D moved back, which causes the arms B to converge and engage the sole'of the boot, in which position it is held firmly, the springtooth entering one of the teeth on the circular rack. In order to release the boot, the slotted plate or lever is borne down, and carried forward, which releases the toothed spring from the rack, drawing the clampingarms B B apart, and the boot is thereby disengaged from the clamp.

It should here be observed that other devices may be employed for operating the clamping-arms B B. Such, for instance, as a link-tie, or a lever or arm provided with an eccentric end to operate against the ends of the arms; consequently I do not confine myself wholly to the device as shown in my specification and accompanying drawings.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a foot-rest the clamping arms B B, and lever D, substantially as set forth.

2. In combination with the foot-rest, the lever D, arms B B, spring-tooth F, and ratchet G, arranged and operating substantially as shown and specified.
