BATHTUB WALL AND rtoon Jol-NT.
Application tiled Augustl, 1926. Serial No. 129,504.
This invention relates to a means for securing bath tubs to building walls and floors in a manner to prevent leaks at such joining points after' the building has settled. 1With the ordinary arrangement of mounting a bath tub against a wall, much difliculty is encountered in the course of time, due yto a crack forming at the joint due toa change in the dimensions or settling of a building. The purpose of the present invention is to provide connecting means between the bath tub and building wall or.I
' Shown in the drawing, comprises a strip of sheet metal which is attached to the upright frame members of the wall along the rim of a bath tub. A similar strip is secured to the door around the edge of the apron ot the tub. The space between the edge of the tub and the securing strip is then illed with an elastic sealing means such as tar.
The improved bath tub attaching and sealing means is illustrated in the drawings,
' wherein:
.Figure 1 is a plan view of a built-in hath tub showing walls in section surrounding three sides thereof.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view of the construction shown in Figure l: and
Fig. 3- is a transverse section ot the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a different etvle of tub than that shown in Figure 1, having a wall on one side thereof only and an apron lextending around the remaining three sides. Fig. 5' is an enlarged sectional detail taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.' I
Fig. 6 is a. sectional detail showing the floor joints and taken on the line'G-- of' Figure 4.
Fig. 't' is an enlargedsectional detail illustrating a Hanged attaching plate used at the square corners of a tub such as illustrated in Figure l.
Fig. 8 is a sectional view similar to that shown in Fig. 5 but` showing a slightly modified attaching plate made of two parts.
ln the diderent views a bath tub 1 of customary construction is shown provided with a standard form of rim 2, beveled at its edge as indicated in Figures 5 and 8. The at.- taching plate 3 is shown formed to extend around the lower edge of the rim and otherwise to lie dat against the upright -frame members 4 of the wall. The attaching plate is nailed to these frame members, being perforated for this purpose as illustrated in Figure 7. At the corners the bent flange 5 ot the lplate is preferably partly cut. away at 6 to facilitate bending of the plate into the desiredform at the corner. The space 7 between the attaching plates and the rim of the tub is filled with an elastic tar-like sealing substance. indicated by solid black.
The apron of the tub at its ldwer edge is similarly connected to the floor beneath the tiling or other surfacing material. The connecting plate at this point is indicated at 8, Figure 8, and is somewhat differently formed thany the plate 3 to provide a channel or recess 9 for receiving the lower edge of the apron. This joint is likewise sealed b v tar or similar elastic material 10.
rlhe utility of the joining and sealing means` is apparent since it. elfectually prevents water from working past the edge at the wall and floor joints.
li claim:
l. Means for attaching a bath tub to a wall and forming a seal at the joint, comprising a plate attached to the wall and eX- tending along the rim of the tub and bent inwardly along its lower edge to engage the tub beneath the rim, and elastic sealing material between the outer edge ot the tub rim and the said plate.
2. A means for attaching a bath tub or similar article to a wall or floor comprising a plate extending along the edge of said article when attached toy a wall or floor and formed to provide a pocketfor sealing material such as tar and to extend around the inner edge of the rim or apron of the tub.
Signed at Chicago this 14th day of August, 1926.
