RAILROAD SLEEPER.
Application filed January This inventionhas reference generally to railway track beds and more particularly relates to improved reinforced concrete sleeper for supporting railway rails.
T he invention as its primary aim and object contemplates the provision of an improved sleeper wherein the sleeper or body portions are constructed of cementitious material reinforced adjacent the base portions and rail seats to increase the longevity, portions of the reinforcing means serving to connectlthe sleeper portions together while the sleeper portions are in addition provided with means on the under surface to prevent creeping of the track bed.
More particularly the invention embraces the provision of a sleeper wherein each body portion is provided with a rail web engaging portion and these portions of each pair of connected sleeper portions extend in the same direction so that the sleeper may be readily connected with the spaced rails of the track bed and in forming the track bed it is preferable that the sleepers bealternately engaged from different directions transversely of the track bed to ensure of the retention of the rails in proper spaced relation.
More specific objects of the invention reside in the improved construction of the reinforcing means for the cementitious sleeper portions and the utilization of the connecting means between the sleeper portions as part of the reinforcing means of the rail seats for the sleeper portions.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will be more readily apparent from the following descriptions taken in connection with the drawings forming part of this specification.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the above described views to indicate corresponding parts.
Referring now, more particularly, to the accompanying drawings, there is provided a sleeper which consists of spaced body or ends being anchored in the bodies 1 for a' purpose that will presently appear.
Each bodyl is formed with a rail seat 5 and the seats in the connected sleeper bodies are preferably inclined slightly towards the center or inner ends of the bodies while formed above the seats are rail web engaging portions 6. In this connection it is to be noted that the portions 6 of each pair of connected sleeper bodies extend in the same direction to facilitate engagement of the rail seats with a pair of rails not shown and it is likewise apparent that by alternately engaging a body of these sleepers from opposite sides of the rails or track bed that the same can be engaged with the rails and when engaged in the manner described act to hold the rails against movement relative to each other.
In order to prevent creeping of the rails the under surfaces of the sleeper bodies 1 are serrated or provided with teeth 7 and 8 which extend in opposite directions respectively.
For the purposes of reinforcing the rail seats and web engaging portions 5 and 6 respectively of the sleeper bodies at the time they are being molded relatively short rods 9 are arranged in spaced relation longitudinally of the bodies and in substantial alignment with the bar 1 while the bar 4 in addition has connected to its terminals a plurality of preferably three slightly inclined rods 10 which are positioned immediately above the bars 9 but at an inclination toward the ends of the bars 4 and preferably parallel with the seats 5 so as to reinforce the base portions of the seats. In addition these rods 10 terminate in upstanding hook portions 11 which conform to the shape of the rail web engaging portion 6 and act to effectively reinforce the same. The inner ends of the rods preferably terminate in attaching portions which are connected with the rolled terminals of the bar 4; as indicated at 12. It is also to be noted that the base portions are further reinforced by relatively short bars 13 anchored longitudinally of the body adjacent the medial portion thereof and between and parallel to the rods 2.
It is believed in view of the foregoing description that a further oetailed description of the operation of the invention is unnecessary. It is likewise believed that the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. A sleeper of the character described comprising spaced body portions of cementitious material, rods connecting the body portions and anchored therein, rail seats provided on the upper surfaces of the body portions, rail web engaging portions formed on one and the corresponding sides of the rail seats to facilitate the application of the sleeper in position and oppositely extending teeth provided on the under surface of the body portions.
2. In a railway sleeper, spaced cementitious body portions provided with rail seats, spaced rods connecting the body port-ions and having hooked terminals to facilitate the anchoring thereof, a bar connecting the upper parts of the body portions, rail seat reinforcing portions anchored in the bodies and connected to the bar and to the reinforcing members anchored in the bodies between the rail seats and the base thereof to further increase the rigidity, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a railway sleeper, spaced cementitious bodies provided in the upper surfaces with rail seats and with rail web engaging portions on one and the same sides of the seats of each pair of connecting bodies, rods connecting the bodies adjacent the lower portions forming reinforcing means for the lower portions, a bar connecting the upper portions of the body, a relatively short rod arranged in an inclination and directly beneath the rail seats and connected to the ends of the bar and provided with underlying hooked terminals positioned so as to reinforce the rail web engaging portions, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
