UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT A. HIERS, OF GRANVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T NOBLE & COOLEY COMPANY, OF GRANVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
DRUM-SNARE-ADJUSTING MEANS.
Application filed February 6, 1926. Serial No. 86,401.
This invention relates to snare drums and has for its main object the provision of a drum of this nature with snare throw-olf means.
Another object of the invention is to provide such a drum with snare adjusting or stressing means.
A further object of the invention is to provide a drum of this nature with a com- I bined snare adjusting and snare throw-off means.
Other objects and novel features of my invention will be more fully described as the specification proceeds.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a drum, showing my invention as applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a fragmental view of the snare adjusting means and Figure 3 is a top plan view of same.
Referring to the drawings in detail 5 indicates a drum provided at one end thereof with a top or beating head 6 and a bottom 1P5 head 7 at the opposite end having snares S removably fixed to the drum as at 9, stretched across the outer surface of the lower head 7.
These snares 8 may be laced through openings in an adjustably mounted plate 11 and through openings in a plate 12 at the opposite end and then suitably secured or tied together. The plate 11 forms a part of a combined throw-off and snare straining or adjusting means 13 comprising, a bracket 14 fixed to the drum frame 15 having an arcuate slot 16 in one arm 17 and a hole in the other arm 18 of the bracket 14 in which is removably pivoted a swinging frame or forked 4o lever 19 having projections 20 provided with flat surfaces 21. These fiat surfaces 21 act as stop surfaces for the swinging frame when same is pulled downwardly to stretch the snares across the lower head 7 of the drum 5.
The frame 19 will maintain this position pull in the direction of the arrow Fig. 1. An
adjusting thumb screw 22 passes through an opening or hole in a wall 23 of the forked lever 19 and is threaded through the plate 11 through which the snares are laced to stress or adjust the tension of the snares.
From the foregoing it will be seen that 1 have provided a combined snare adjusting and throw-off mechanism that may readily be operated to disengage the snares from the lower drum head by swinging the snare hold-- ing bracket upwardly, and adapted to stress or adjust the snares by operating the snare adjusting screw 22.
I have illustrated a preferred form of my invention and in its broadest aspect-s it is not limited to the particular construction shown, nor to any particular construction or arrangement of parts by which it has been or may be, carried into effect, since many changes and alterations may be made in the structure shown without departing from the principles of the invention. and without sac-- rificing its chief advantages.
Having described my invention, what I claim now is:
in a drum of the nature described having. a beating head, a. lower head, a frame intermediate said heads, snares associated with the lower head. snare throw-oif means, a bracket on thefran'ie .iaving arms thereon, one of said arms having a slot and the other arm a hole therein, a lever pivotally and re movably mounted on said bracket, projections on said lever projecting into said slot andhole and a stop surface on each of said projections.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
HERBERT A. HIERS.
