ELECTRIC CIGAR LIGHTER.
Application filed July 14, 1924. Serial No. 725,949.
This invention relates to improvements in igniting devices for the lighting of cigars, cigarettes, and the like.
The primary object of this invention is the provision of a novel cigar lighter embodying novlel advertising means associated there-v wit 1.
A further and important object of this invention is the provision of an electrically operated cigar lighting device havin illuminated advertising means associate therewith which will be operated by a person in an attempt to light a cigar or the like.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cigar lighting and advertising device.
Figure 2 is a longitudinal cross sectional view taken through the improved cigar lighting device, showing the associated details thereof.
Figure 3 is a plan View of a resistance structure and its associated supporting details embodied in this invention.
Figure 4 is a view of the insulation base portion which receives the resistance igniting unit.
Figure 5 is a cross sectional view taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.

In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of this invention the letter A may generally designate the improved cigar lighter and advertising device which may include a housing or casing B upon the top of which the improved igniting structure C is mounted. The invention comprehends the provision of an electric circuit D with which a novel type of resistance unit E may be associated and controlled by means of a switch supportin F placed in the circuit 1). A shunt circuit H may be placed in the main circuit D, including the switch F, and may have an elec-, tric light G placed in the same for the urpose of illuminating advertising in icia upon closing of the switch F.
Referring to the supporting structure B, the same is in the nature of a housing, including a base 15 which may be of wood or any other suitable material, and upon the lower surface of which the supporting studs 16 are provided so that the lower surface of the base 15 may be elevated with res ct to a table or plane. A rear iorizontal wall 1 may be connected with the base, preferably so as to be detachable therefrom; this rear wall 17 being positioned in a vertical plane. Side and front polygonal shaped frames 18 and 19 may be provided, having any approved means associated therewith for supporting frosted glass windows 20 and 21 therein; it of course being understood that a window 20'is provided at each side of the housing B. The side and front frames, and the panes 20 and 21 associated therewith provide side and front walls which are inclined in a converging relation to a top wall 25, which is supported by the upper edges of the side and front walls and the rear wall 17, in any approved relation.
Within the compartment 27 of the housing B, a socket 29 is supported upon the base 15, and which socket 29 is adapted to detachably receive the electric incandescent light G, as a means of illuminating and throwing into relief indicia 31 which maybe placed upon the frosted glass 20 and 21.
Referring to the structure C, the same preferably includes anelongated supporting stem 40, preferably of tubular formation, providing a passageway 41 therethrough. This stem 40 at its lower portion 42 is preferably vertically supporte in detachable relation in a base socket 43; the latter being attached uponthe top surface of the wall 25 so that the way 41 in the stem portion 42 aligns with an opening 46 provided in the top wall 25. At its upper end the tubular stem 40 arcuates forwardly, as at 48, and has a reduced screw threaded end 49, adapted to detachably receive the shell portion 50 of the casing structure which receives the re- ,the rear wall 17,
sistance unit. This shell portion 50 is provided with an annular seat 51 therein adapted to detachably receive the insulation base portion 52.
The resistance unit E, which is illustrated in perspective in Figure 6, includes the body portion 55, of insulation, of square or rectangular formation, with the poly onal extensions 56 projecting. outwardly o the corners thereof. Embedded in the body 55 is the resistance coil 57, which may be sinuously wound in any approved manner in the body 57, so that a portion of each of the convolutions thereof project outwardly of the upper surface of the body portion 55. The ends 59 and 60 of the resistance coil 57 extend outwardly from side edges of the body 55, between certain of the projections 56.
Referring again to the insulation base 52 which is detachably supported in the socket on the shoulder 51 of the shell 50, the same is of circular disc sl ape formation, including the recess 62, which snugly receives the resistance unit E therein, including corner recesses 63 for receiving the extension 56'of the body 60, whereby to key the resistance unit E in place in the socket of the base 52. lVhen the body-portion of the resistance unit is placed in the socket recess 62, the top surface thereof is substantially flush with the upper surface of the base 52. In the position described, the ends 59 and 60 of the resistance coil 57 may be clamped by terminal screws 66 onto certain metal straps 67 which are carried by the base 52 in certain depressions 69 provided inwardly of the top surface thereof. Below the base 52, certain metal straps 70 are connected by conducting screws 71 with the straps 67, and the straps 70 are adapted to be connected by binding screws 7 2 with conducting wires 73 and 74 which lead downwardly through the tubular stem 40 and through the opening 46 in the housing wall 25.
A ring shaped cap member 75 is associated with the shell 50, including an internally screw threaded flange 76 for engagement with the shell 50, and having an annular retaining flange 78 which may be used to clamp the thin flexible mica disc 79 over the exposed convolutions of the ignition resistance unit E.
The switch F is preferably carried by the top wall 25, and is of any approved character, including the shell 80, and the terminal screws 82 and 83 therein which may be bridged by the switch button or arm 84. The wiring of the circuits is best illustrated in the diagrammatic view in Figure 7, and it is preferred to provide a fuse 95 in the main circuit D, the same preferably being detachably carried at the inside surface of by suitable detachable snaps as are ordinarily provided for such fuses.' The main lead wires 96 and 97 extend through an opening 98 provided in the bottom wall 15, and preferably having an external switch 99 spliced therein, as is illustrated in Figure l of the drawings. A suitable electric plug, not shown, may be carried by the extreme ends of thewires 96 and 97.
Referring to the operation of this inven tion, when a person desires to ignite a cigar or cigarette, it is necessary merely for him to push the switch arm or button 84 of the switch F, and this will simultaneously bridge the main circuit D and shunt circuit H, with the source of current to which the circuits are connected, and ignite the resistance unit E and the incandescent bulb G. Due to the fact that the mica 79 is very thin, the heat transmitted therethrough will be sufficient to ignite the cigar or cigarette, and the bulb G illuminating in the compartment 27 will throw the advertising indicia on the plates 20 and 21 into relief. It is of particular importance that the igniting unit is not dependent upon operation of the bulb G, or vice versa, so that inoperativeness of one of the same will not throw the other out of operation. In fact, it may be desirable during the day time for the operator to have the bulb G inoperative, and he can readily do this by detaching the same from its socket 29 or providing an auxiliary switch in the shunt circuit, either of which instances will not interfere with successful operation of the ignition unit when the switch F is closed.
Various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be made to the form of invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim.
I claim:
In a cigar lighter the combination of a hollow supporting stem, a shell carried at the outer end of said supporting stem, an insulation base carried in said shell having a depression inwardly of the top surface thereof which is polygonal in outline with extension recesses projecting beyond the insulation body of polygonal formation with I corner extensions, the body being adapted to snugly fit into the depression of said insulation base in non-rotatable relation therein with the top surface thereof flush with the normal top surface of the insulation base, said resistance unit furthermore including a resistance coil permanently embedded in the material of the insulation of thebase, an imperforate mica disc, and body of the unit, segmental portions of the detachable cap means for the shell to clamp convolutions of the coil projecting above said mica disc over the resistance unit in the top surface of said body, the ends of abutment with the exposed segmental por- 6 said coil being extended laterally through tions of the convolutions of the coil thereof.
