Description

11. M. WALKER.'
No. 16,154. Patented Deo. z, 1856.
VUNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY M. WALKER, OF NVATER'IOWN, CONNECTICUT.
sIPHoN Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. VALKER, of lVatei-town, in Litcheld county and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement on Siphons, and do hereby declare 'that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists of a device for the simultaneous opening and closing of the orices at each end of a siphon.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I construct my siphon with an opening at the top, secured by a screw cap, as shown at A, the cap being lined with rubber, leather, or, other suitable material, to make itair tight, and with valves, or other device at `each end, connected by a cord, chain, or
CLAPET.
16,154, dated December 2, 1856.
closing the valves. The water or other iuid is poured in at the top, till it is full, the cap is then secured in its place, and the siphon is ready for use at any moment by inserting the short arm in water, and opening the valves, by lowering the ring C. The flow of water can be instantly stopped or renewed, thus making it capable ot' being moved from vessel to vessel without the trouble of refilling at each transfer; and of measuring oli' any quantity of fluid.
My improvement enables me also to use siphons of a size hithereto unattainable from the difficulty of exhausting the air, and of operating them, thus making them of great use in the place of umes and giving increased power.
I am aware that siphons have been iilled at the top, and that a valve or stop cock has been used on the long arm, but
Vhat I claim is- The application of a device for the simultaneous opening and closing of the orifices at each end of a Siphon.
HENRY M. /VALKER.
