Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 161,507, dated March 30, 1875; application filed January 19, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LOUIS GUIENOT, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented a new and Improved Fastening for Bedsteads and all kinds of frame-work; andI do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of fastening; Fig. 2, section of Fig. 1 through line a: 00; Fig. 3, detail of the bolt and nut; Fig. 4, detail of the plate E; Fig. 5, section of bolt through line 3 y of Fig. 3.

This invention relates to an improved fastening for bedstead-rails, and for all kinds of frame-work in general in which the parts are to be detachably connected. It consists in a short bolt, having at one end a screw-thread and nut, and a squared end to receive a wrench, and at the other an angular groove. Said bolt is placed longitudinally in one portion of the frame, and is held therein by the nut, which engages with the side of a recess, the grooved end of the bolt entering a detacha ble plate in the other portion of the framework, which said plate is provided with a lug or extension which moves in the said groove, and, when the bolt is turned, draws and locks the two portions of the frame-work securely together, the peculiar arrangement of the nut with respect to the other devices admitting of the tightening of the locking devices as they may from time to time become loose from wear.

1n the drawing, A represents the end of a bedstead-rail, and B a portion of the headboard. 0 is the bolt placed longitudinally in the portion A, which is recessed at c to accommodate the nut b, and receive the wrench for locking or unlocking the devices. D is the angular groove in the end of the bolt 0, which operates upon the same principle as a bayonet-slot. E is a small detachable metallic plate, which is perforated with a hole the size of the bolt 0, and provided with a lug, c, which moves in the groove D, and locks the devices. This said plate E is made entirely detachable from the rest of the devices, and is inserted loosely in a mortise, d, in the portion B.

The operation of this device is as follows: The plate E is inserted in its mortise, and the bolt 0 arranged in the piece A, with the nut 1) upon the screw-thread in the recess. The parts of the frame A and B are then brought together, and the grooved end of the bolt made to enter the plate E. The said bolt is now turned by means of a small wrench, and

the groove engaging with the lug upon the plate E, thereby drawing and locking the parts of the frame securely together, the nut b and screw-thread upon the bolt serving to tighten the devices when they may become loose, without separating the parts.

I am aware of the fact that it is not new to employ an angular groove and apin to fasten bedsteads, and that a longitudinal bolt has been used somewhat similar to mine. I, therefore, disclaim such inventions. Devices heretofore employed, however, have no means of subsequent adjustment after once looked, and have to be taken to pieces if this is necessary. It will be observed that my fastening obviates this difficulty, and makes a uniformly tight joint.

The devices, as thus described, may be used for bedsteads, fastening the parts of heavy picture-frames, the construction of portable houses, and numerous other uses to which it may be applicable.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is-- The plate E, having lug c, and loosely fitting a mortise in the rail A, in combination with the bolt (J, fitting a hole in the rail B, and having an angular groove, D, at one end, and a screw-thread and nut at the other end, whereby the partsAB can be drawn together and looked, as also the locking device adjusted without separating the parts, substantially as described.
