FENTON B. BRYDLE, OF JAMAICA, NEW YORK.
SHINGIE.
Application filed April is, 1925. Serial No. 23,439.
This invention relates generally to shingles of the composition type.'
A general object of the invention isto provide a shingleof this general type in which member 11 is folded to the underturned position the angular or corner portions 12 will assume the form of lateral extensions with present impervioussurfaces o-fa stable charrelation to the body portion of the taband will thus provide for the anchoring engagement referred to with the previously laid adjacent shingles. Preferably the extreme downwardly extending corner portion of the tab 11 is removed to provide'an edge 15 I the edgeportions exposed to the weather will a'cter resistant to the action of wind and rain. Another object of the invention is to provide improved'means for 'anchoringthe lower extremities ofthe shingles in position.
The invention consists of a shingle having an underturned corner tab portion cooperating with underturned edge portions on the portion of the shingle exposed to the weather to provide impervious and relatively thick and substantial edges. The corner tab portion is preferably so formed as to extend laterally under tlie edges of adjacent shingles although the horizontal edge visible to an observer extends only from edge toedge of the two adjacent underlying shingles.
Other" features of the invention will be hereinafter "referred to.
In the drawings in which a preferred embodiment of the invention has been selected for illustration, r
Figure 1 is a plan view showing in assembled relation a group of shingles embodying to the invention.
Figure 2 is a view in cross-section on the line 2+2 of Figure 1.
'Figur" 3 is a line in cross-sectionon the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
$5, Figure a face view of the under side of one of the shingles shown in Figure 1. I Figure 5 is a sectional view of the shingle shown in Figure 4. L
Figure 6 is a detailed view showing a portion of a shingle before the edg'es arefolded.
12 in the tab member 11 the tab is initially,
formed as shown in Figure 6 of the drawing with side edges 13 formed substantiallyatrightangles to the side edges 1450f the-body portion; of the shingle 110; With this atrangement it willbe seen that when the tab an'ample anchoring function is provi such as is clearly shown in Figures 4 and 6 of the drawing.
In addition to the underturned corner portion 11, I provide for the turning under of the downwardly converging edge portions 13 of'thelower half portion'of theshin le.
The purpose of this is to provide an un er- 7 I turnedand accordingly impervious surface for presentation to the weather, it being clear that the new edge portion 16 which is thus provided has the same impervious surface finish thatis' characteristic of the outer face of the'main body portion of the shingle 10. 7
By thus doing away with the raw or cut edge which is characteristic of this general type heretofore known indoing away with the wear and tear to which such edges are subjectedunder the action of rain and wind.
'In addition to the resistance to weather and used I succeed which is providedby the turned edges 16,
a more stable construction in general is rovided in that the edge portions of the ower part ofthe shin le have a double thickness. An additiona advantage of this construction resides in the attractive ap, pearance which is presented by the thickened edge lines with the accompanying shadows to the attrac-j.
which contribute s'ubstantiall tiveness of a roof or swal protected by shingles oithis type. 1
It will beseen that the turned edges 16 are provided only on the downwardly facing edges of the shingle and that the upper edges of the shingles remain in their flat or unturned condition. With this arran ment there is no interlocking of the e ge portions 16 with the underlying shingles nor is there need of any such interlockin ed. by
since the anchoring tab member 11 already referred to.
.'WhatIclaimis:-'
p -1.'A flexible shingle of the com sition ty'pehavihg- 'anunderturned corner ta meinu o ber. formed with lateral extensions to provide; anchoring engagement with adjacent 'shinment with the lower surface of the shingle I gles, and the adjacent converging edges of individual type, a corner tab member formed 25 the shingle being underturned into engagement with the ower surface of the shingle to present impervious surfaces to the weather. p
2. In a'flexible composition shingle of the individual type, an under-turned. corner tab portion formed with lateral extensions to provide anchoring engagement with adjacent shingles, and the ad'acent lower edges of the shingle being un erturned into en ageto formmreinforcing edges. 3.1 In a flexible compositionshingle of the individual type, a corner tab mem'ber'formed "with edges extending substantially at right angles to the' adjacent'edges' of the shingle whereby to provide lateral. angular extensions on the tab members, and-the adjacent edges of. the shingle being underfolded into adhering contact with the lower surface of the shingle to provide reinforced edges and edges impervious to weather.
4. In a flexible, composition shingle of the with edges extending substantially at right -angles to the adjacent edges of the shingle whereby when folded to underturned positi'on said tab edges will be parallel to the edges of the shingle, and said adjacent edges of the shingle being folded under into contact with the lower surface of the shingle,
the line of fold of the edge portions being in lzglinement with said edges of the tab mem er. I
5. In a flexible composition shingle of the individual type, and underturned corner tab member formed with laterally extending corner portions, and the adjacent edges of the shingle being underturned into co'ntactwith the lower surface of the shingle, said folded edge portions beingcut away to avoid interference with the corner tab portions, and the line of fold of the edge portions-being in alinement with the ends of the line of "fold of the corner tab member.
