Description

1,614,831 Jan' 18 1927" .1. B. cRoFooT STAPLE Filed May 7, 1925 n I 17 ya 499. dmv am erative position for holding Patented Jan. 1s,- 1927.
UNITED STATES JOHN B. GBOFOOT, OF ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS.
STAPLE.
Application nled lay 7,
My invention pertains to a staple, and more particularly to staples provided in strip form, and has for its object to rovide means on the side of the staple .to be c am ed over a band or plate or the 4like for holdlng the same on a container or object. Another object is to provide a strip of staples so'arranged and vcut as to be readily fsheared apart in the stapling machine and so as to provide a lip means at one side of the sta le to be bent onto the top of a plate or the like for holdin the same in position.
Other o jects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combina.- tions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, andV in which, f
Fig. 1 is a partial lan view of'a strip of staples in the origina form;
Fig. 2 is a side view thereof after thev teeth have lbeen bent downward;
Fig. 3 isa perspective view of a staple constructed in accordance with myinvention;
Fig. 4 shows my improved staple in opa band or hoop on a barrel l Fig. 5 is a cross sectional view takenv on line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and
Fig. 6 is a view of a modiiied form `of staple strip and staple. p
In the preferred form of construction shown in the 'drawing thestaple strip is cut on curved lines 8 separating the staple units, and thereby providing a lip 9 at one side of each body 10 of the staple, and a corresponding notch 11 at the opposite side of each staple unit, to form the lip of the succeeding unit. Teeth or cleats 12 are provided at each end of the staple body 10, and extend along the sides of the staple strip. these teeth being bent down along the dotted lines shown in Fig. 1, to the position shown Iin Fig. 2. Openings 13 are cutalong the line of separation outward of lip 9, and an opening 14 may also .be provided in the lip, these openings are adapted tol receive the fingers or elements provided in the stapling machine for moving the strip forward and for holding it in position during the stapling operation. y
, The units are connected and'\remain integral, along the dotted lines l5, as shown in ma. serial no. 215,546.'
the drawing, to be sheared and separated alon these lines during operation of the stap mg machine.
This type of staple is especially adapted to hold a member 16 on a body or object 17, like the band or hoop on the barrel, as shown in the drawing, and this staple is also adapted for holding any plate or meinber like a sign-plate in position on an object, the teeth l2being dri-ven into the body or object adjacent the band or member 16, and theA lip 9 being bent over the top of the band or member as shown. Y
In Fig. 6 I have illustrated a modified form, in which a plurality of lines 18 se arate lips 19. ofl one staple unit from t e other unit by forming corresponding notches 2O on the body 21. In this form a plurality of lips are provided instead of the single `central lip 9 in the receding form.
Teeth 22 are provlded at the ends of the body 21, along the sides of the strip, and openings 23 are provided for receivin operating lingers of the stapling mac ine.
the
The staples are left-v integral orr connected between the openings 23, as indicated by the dotted lines 24, and are cut along said lines by the shearing plunger in the stapling machine. n
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for canyin my invention into eiect, this is capab e o variation and modification without depart- I ing from the spirit of the invention. I,
therefore, do not wish to be limited to the,
precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.v
Having described my invention, what I` claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: Y
1. A staple having an oblong body with teeth' extending from the opposite ends to engage into an object and having a notch at one side between said teeth, there being openings in the staple body for receiving the operating linger of a stapling machine,
and a lip extending from said body at the side opposite said notch to correspond with said notch, said lip being adapted to be bent up and placed over a band or member for holding the same on an ob'ect.
2. A strip of connected'stap e units, each unit having teeth arran ed at its ends and positioned at the sides o the strip, s aid strip being cut to form lip means extending from one side of each unit and thereby providing a corresponding notch in the side of the succeeding unit, there being integral parts retainedl between the successive units to be sheared by the stapling machine, and there being openings provided in alinement with the line to be sheared by said machine.
3. A strip of connected staple units, each unith'aving teeth arranged at the sides of the strip, said strip being cut to form lip means extending from one side of each unit and thereby providingA a` corresponding notch in theside 0f the succeeding unit,
there being an integral part retained between said units to be sheared bythe stapling machine, said strip beingarranged and adapted for receiving a feeding finger of a stapling machine to feed said strip. I
4. A strip of connected staple units, each unit having teeth positioned along the sides f of the strip, said strip being cut to form lips extending from one side of each unit, there being openings provided adjacent said lips for receiving a feeding finger of the stapling machine, and said units beingconnected and integral along a line'adjacent said openings to be sheared by said-stapling machine.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN B. CROFOOT.
