THERMAL-EFFICIENCY CASING. .FOR HEATING BOILERS.
Application filed March- 29, 1924.
My invention relates to improvements in thermal efficiency casings for heating boilers and the object of the invention is to devise an improved means for directing the hot gases issuing from the furnace down around theoutside of the water jacket prior to their issuing to the smoke pipe.
A further object is to devise alternative means whereby the hot gases issuing from the furnace can be led directly to the smoke pipe without traversing the outer surface of the water jacket.
A still further object is to devise means whereby the means for conducting the exhaust gases about the outer surface of the water jacket can be adjusted when the easing has been placed in position to compensate for the draught of the particularchimney to which the device is applied.
My invention consists of a casing'constructed and arranged all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. 1 represents a side elevation of my casing broken away to disclose the construction thereof in section.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof partly in section, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view partly in section.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
The present embodiment of my invention is particularly applicable to vertical sectional boilers in which 1 represents the vertical sections of the water jacket and 2 is the outlet pipe for the gases from the firepot. 3 is a rectangular casing of suitable heating insulating material extending around the furnace and its side and rear walls spaced therefrom. 4 is a horizontal partition in the casing positioned immediately above the top of the furnace, the rear end ofsuch horizontal partition l being provided with a downwardly extending baffle 5 through which extends the slide damper 6 adapted to be operated by the rod 7 extending exteriorly of the casing. 8 are orifices provided through the partition 4 in the vicinity of its sides into which are inserted the telescopic tubes 9, the upper portions of said tubes having the flanges 10 which engage the top surface of the partition and thus hold the tubes in their suspended position. The lower portions of the tubes are adapted to telescope into the upper portions Serial No. 703905.
and are held in their adjusted position by frictional contact therewith. ll'is an outlet orifice in the casing adapted to be connected with the smoke pipe'12. 13 are a. plurality of clean-out orifices extending through the top of the casing; preferably in registerwith the tubes 9,- said orifices-belng closed by the tampions 14, and 15 are a plurality of similar orifices provided in the sides of the casing 3 in the vicinity of the lower ends of the tubes in order that the lower portions of the said tubes can be readily adjusted when desired, said orifices being closed by the tampions 16.
hen my casing is assembledthe tampions 16 are removed and the lower portions of the tubes 9 are adjusted so thatthe hot gases constituting the products of combustion are evenly distributed over the-entire outer surface of the sectional of 'the'h'ot water jacket. W hen this is done the lower edges of the forward tubes are positioned above the lower edges of the intermediate tubes and, likewise the lower edges of the intermediate tubes are positioned above the lower edges of the rearmost tubes. This is explained by reason of the fact that the longer the pull to the smoke pipe the shorter will be the length of the tube 9 in order to constitute an even pull on the hot gases from such casing.
The operation of my device is as follows:
lVhen the slide damper 6 is closed the hot gases issuing from the outlet 2 are deflected downwardly by the baffle 5 and pass forwardly as indicated by the arrows in Figure 1 of the drawing. As their density increases, further gas being introduced into the casing passes down the outside of the sections 1 until it reaches the lower ed es of the tubes 9 when it is drawn upwardly therethrough into the upper portion of the casing above the partition at and thence rearwardly out of the outlet 11 into the smoke pipe 12. Consequently such gases heat the exterior surfaces of the sections 1 prior to issuing from the casing.
Tn starting the fire in the furnace or where it is desired to reduce the temperature of the water in the sections, the damper 6 is opened and the hot gases issuing from the outlet 2 will then pass directly through the bafile 5 into the outlet orifice 11 and thence to the smoke pipe without passing around the outer surface of the sections 1.
From the above description it will be apparent that I have devised a simple and effective casing for heating boilers that will materially increase the efficiency of such furnace and, moreover, one in which the heating of the water therein can be readily varied irrespective of the fire in such furnace.
lVhile I have shown my casing as applied to vertical sectional boilers known as the square sectional type, it could with equal facility be applied to any other type such as the vertical round section type.
What I claim as my invention is:
l. The combination with a hot water boiler and a smoke pipe, of a casing surrounding the boiler and spaced apart from the walls and top thereof, a plurality of depending telescopic tubes in said casing, the hot gases from the furnace being admitted into the casing, means for conducting the gases from such casing to the smoke pipe through the tubes, and alternative means for conducting the gases from the furnace directly to the smoke pipe.
2. The combination with a hot water boiler and a smoke pipe, of a casing sur-- and dividing it into upper and lower chanibers, the smoke pipe communicating with the upper chamber, said partition having an outlet orifice therethrough, a damper for such orifice and said partition having a plurality of orifices in the vicinity of each side thereof, telescopic tubes depending from each side orifices into the lower chamber of the casing between the walls of the boiler and the side walls of the casing.
3. The combination with a hot water boiler and a smoke pipe, of a casing surrounding the boiler, a partition extending across the casing in the vicinity of its top and dividing it into upper and lower chainers, the smoke pipe communicating with the upper chamber, said partition having an outlet orifice therethrough, a damper for such orifice and said partition having a plurality of orifices in the vicinity of each side thereof, telescopic tubes depending from each side orifices into the lower chamber of the casing between the walls of the boiler. and the side walls of the casing, the side walls and top of the casing having orifices tlierethrough in the vicinity of the lower ends and tops of the said tubes respectively and closures for such orifices.
